Chapter 1: Drunk Confessions
The living room smelled like cheap merlot and the sandalwood incense Maya had lit two hours ago in a futile attempt to calm her nerves. Charcoal smudges stained the rug, a half-finished portrait of a stranger stared from an easel, and Sasha was crying on the couch.
“He said I was boring in bed,” Sasha hiccupped, twisting a strand of honey-blonde hair around her finger. “Can you believe that? Three years and that’s the epitaph.”
Maya handed her another glass of wine. “Tyler’s dick probably thinks a clitoris is a European capital city. You’re well rid of him.” Her voice was steady, practiced. This was her role: the sharp-tongued, reliable best friend. The one who didn’t feel her stomach clench every time Sasha’s bare foot brushed against her thigh on the couch.
Sasha laughed, a wet, broken sound. “God, you always know what to say.” She looked at Maya, her blue eyes swimming. “What’s wrong with me, Maya? Why does it never stick?”
Because you keep dating men who aren’t me. The thought was so old, so worn smooth from constant handling in the dark corners of her mind, it barely registered as pain anymore. Just a fact. Like her pink hair or the constellation of freckles across her nose.
“Nothing’s wrong with you,” Maya said, her voice softer now. “You’re just… open. You give everyone the best parts, and they take them until they’re tired, and then they blame you for having nothing left to give.”
Sasha stared at her, a tear tracing a perfect path down her cheek. Maya watched its journey, hypnotized. Without thinking, she reached out. Her thumb caught the tear, swiping it away. The pad of her thumb brushed the incredibly soft skin just below Sasha’s eye.Time stopped. The air crackled, thick with incense and unsaid things.
Sasha’s breath hitched. She didn’t pull away. Instead, she leaned into the touch, her eyes searching Maya’s face for something—permission, maybe, or just a sign.
“Maya,” she whispered. It wasn’t a question. It was an arrival.
And then Sasha was closing the distance. Her lips brushed Maya’s, a tentative, wine-stained question mark.
Every cell in Maya’s body screamed. A decade of carefully constructed walls, of deflected compliments and suppressed daydreams, turned to dust in that single, soft touch. She froze, terrified that if she moved, she’d wake up.
Sasha pulled back a millimeter, uncertainty clouding her eyes. That was all it took. Maya’s hand slid from Sasha’s cheek to the back of her neck, fingers tangling in the loose hairs at her nape. She pulled her back in.
This kiss was not tentative.
It was a dam breaking. It was hunger, deep and raw. Maya’s tongue swept into Sasha’s mouth, tasting the bitter red wine and the sweet, unique flavor that was just Sasha. A soft moan escaped Sasha’s throat, and the sound went straight to Maya’s core, hot and liquid.
Sasha’s hands came up, framing Maya’s face, her thumbs stroking her jawline. “I’ve always wondered,” she breathed against Maya’s lips.
“Shut up,” Maya murmured, and kissed her again, deeper. She pushed forward, gently guiding Sasha back against the arm of the couch. Their bodies aligned, Sasha soft and pliant beneath her. The weight felt obscenely right. Maya’s knee slid between Sasha’s thighs, and Sasha arched into the pressure with a gasp.
“Maya…”
“Tell me to stop,” Maya said, her voice ragged. Her lips trailed down Sasha’s jaw, to her throat, feeling the frantic pulse there. She didn’t stop.
“Don’t you dare stop.”
That was all the permission Maya needed. Her hands, which had drawn a hundred sketches of this woman from memory, finally had license to map the real territory. She slipped her fingers under the hem of Sasha’s soft cotton t-shirt, skimming over the warm, smooth skin of her stomach. Sasha shuddered.
Maya pulled back just enough to yank the shirt over Sasha’s head. She wasn’t wearing a bra. Her breasts were full, pale in the lamplight, her nipples already hard. Maya’s mouth went dry. She’d imagined this, a thousand desperate times in the dark, but imagination was a cheap, flat imitation.
“You’re staring,” Sasha whispered, a blush spreading across her chest.
“You’re perfect,” Maya said, and it was the least sarcastic, most truthful thing she’d ever uttered. She lowered her head and took one tight peak into her mouth.
Sasha cried out, her back bowing off the couch. Her hands fisted in Maya’s pink hair, not pushing her away, but holding her close. Maya swirled her tongue, savoring the taste, the weight, the utterly devastating reality of it. She switched to the other breast, giving it the same attentive worship, while her hand slid down Sasha’s stomach, past the waistband of her leggings.
She found her wet, so fucking wet, the fabric already soaked through. Sasha bucked against her hand. “Please,” she panted. “God, please.”
Maya hooked her fingers into the leggings and her panties, dragging them down in one rough motion. Sasha kicked them off, naked now, exposed and glorious on the stained couch in the messy apartment that was their world.
Maya sat back on her heels, drinking her in. The blonde curls between her thighs, the flush spreading across her skin. She’d never seen anything more beautiful.
“Don’t think,” Sasha said, her eyes dark with need. “Just feel.”
That was the problem. Maya was feeling everything, too much, a lifetime’s worth of longing crashing into the present moment. It was terrifying. So she did the only thing that made sense. She lowered her head between Sasha’s thighs.
The scent of her was intoxicating, musky and sweet. Maya parted her with her thumbs and licked a slow, firm stripe from her entrance to her clit.
Sasha’s hips jerked. “Fuck!”
Maya did it again, then settled into a rhythm, licking and sucking, focusing on the hard nub of her clit. She used her tongue the way she wished someone would use it on her—relentless, knowing, without hesitation. She added a finger, sliding it deep inside, feeling Sasha clench around her.
“Yes… just like that… oh my god, Maya.” Sasha’s words dissolved into gasps. Her thighs trembled on either side of Maya’s head. Maya added a second finger, curling them, finding a rhythm with her hand that matched the circling of her tongue. She could feel Sasha tightening, coiling, her breath coming in sharp, ragged sobs.
“I’m gonna… I’m coming…” Sasha choked out.
Maya didn’t let up. She drove her deeper, faster, her own body aching with a desperate, throbbing need. Sasha’s orgasm hit her like a seizure. Her whole body went rigid, a sharp cry tearing from her throat as she pulsed around Maya’s fingers. Maya kept working her through it, gentling her touch until Sasha’s body went limp, boneless against the cushions.
Silence descended, broken only by their heavy breathing. Maya slowly withdrew her fingers, bringing them to her own mouth, tasting Sasha on her skin. The flavor was primal, a claim.
Sasha’s eyes fluttered open. She looked dazed, wrecked, beautiful. She reached for Maya, pulling her up for a slow, deep kiss. Maya could taste herself on Sasha’s tongue.
Then Sasha’s hands were at Maya’s waist, pushing her own shirt up. “My turn,” she murmured, and there was a new confidence in her voice.
Maya let herself be undressed. When she was naked, Sasha pushed her back onto the couch, straddling her hips. She looked down at Maya, her hair falling around her face.
“I’ve never done this before,” Sasha admitted, her fingers tracing Maya’s collarbone.
“I know.”
“Tell me what you like.”
You. I just like you. But that wasn’t what this was about tonight. Tonight was about bodies, about release, about answering a question that had hung between them for eleven years.
“Touch me,” Maya said simply.Sasha did. Her touch was curious, tender, then bolder. She learned the shape of Maya’s breasts, the sensitive spot on her ribs, the curve of her hip. When her fingers finally dipped between Maya’s thighs, finding her slick and ready, Maya let out a shaky groan.
Sasha’s exploration was less practiced, fumbling at first, but the sheer sincerity of it, the intense focus on Maya’s face for cues, was more arousing than any expert touch could have been. When Sasha’s fingers slid inside her, Maya’s head fell back.
“Like this?” Sasha asked, moving deeper.
“Yes. Right there. Don’t stop.”
Sasha kissed her, swallowing her moans. She built a rhythm, her thumb finding Maya’s clit, and Maya’s world narrowed to the friction, the pressure, the blue eyes watching her unravel. It had been so long since she’d let anyone this close, since she hadn’t faked it. This was terrifyingly, devastatingly real.
Her orgasm built quickly, a tight coil in her belly. She came with Sasha’s name on her lips, a broken, choked sound as her hips rocked against Sasha’s hand, waves of pleasure radiating through her until she was spent.
They collapsed together in a heap of limbs on the too-small couch. The lamp cast their tangled shadows against the wall of artwork. Maya’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drum of what have we done?
Sasha nuzzled into her neck, her breath warm. “Wow,” she sighed, the word full of awe and satisfaction.
“Yeah,” Maya whispered, staring at the ceiling. “Wow.”
The silence that followed was different. The heat of the wine and the lust was dissipating, and the reality of the room—their friendship, their history—seeped back in. Maya could feel the panic starting to ice its way up her spine.
Sasha shifted, propping herself up on an elbow. She looked down at Maya, her expression soft, hopeful. “That was…”
“A mistake,” Maya finished, the words out before she could stop them. She saw Sasha flinch as if struck.
“What?”
“This was a mistake, Sash. You were upset. I was… I don’t know what I was.” Maya sat up, pulling the crocheted blanket from the back of the couch to cover herself. “We were drunk and you’re vulnerable. It doesn’t mean anything.”
The lie tasted like ash in her mouth.
Sasha sat up too, the warmth in her eyes cooling into something like hurt. “It didn’t feel like nothing to me.”
“It was sex. Really good sex. But it’s just sex.” Maya forced a casual shrug, the one she’d perfected over years of hiding. “We can’t… we can’t do this again. It’ll ruin everything.”
Sasha stared at her for a long moment. The open hope on her face slowly shuttered, replaced by a mask of careful neutrality. “Right,” she said quietly. “Of course. You’re right.”
She stood, gathering her clothes with a brisk, efficient motion that was utterly unlike her. She dressed with her back to Maya.
“Sasha…”
“It’s fine, Maya. Really.” She turned, offering a small, tight smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “A one-time thing. No big deal. I should go.”
“You don’t have to.”
“I really should.” Sasha leaned down, picking up her wine glass from the floor. She finished the last swallow, a period at the end of the sentence. “I’ll text you tomorrow, okay?”
Maya just nodded, numb. She watched Sasha walk to the door, her heart a shriveled thing in her chest. Sasha paused, her hand on the knob, but didn’t look back.
The door clicked shut.
Maya sat alone in the silent, messy room, the scent of their sex still hanging in the air, and let the loss she’d been running from for eleven years finally wash over her. She had gotten everything she’d ever wanted. And in getting it, she was certain she had just destroyed it all.
