Chapter 2: Lucy's First Sweep
The transfer hit. The sheer number of zeros in her account still didn’t feel real a week later. It was just code in a server somewhere, but its effect was palpable. New, military-grade actuator parts arrived in silent, unmarked drones. A smell of fresh components and wealth now hung in the lab.
Lory watched ‘Lucy’ glide across the polished floor.
The android moved with a fluid, eerie grace, its microfiber mop tracing perfect, overlapping arcs on the hex-tiled floor. The base model Julian had provided was top-shelf—a ‘Galatea’ series, with a hyper-realistic silicone skin and a learning-capable neural matrix. Its default face was sweet, approachable. That would have to go.
The maid programming was trivial. Simple environmental mapping and choreography algorithms. Lory had slapped that together in a day. It was the other stuff that kept her up, neural stimulants humming through her system as she worked deep into the neon-lit night.
Stronger actuators in the shoulders and core for sustained, rhythmic impact. A custom grip in the right hand, with pressure sensors to measure the feedback from a flogger’s strike. The voice modulator was her current obsession. She’d isolated forty-seven distinct vocal markers of dominance—subtle gravel, precise diction, controlled volume drops—and was trying to weave them into a seamless profile that could switch from a submissive “Will there be anything else, Sir?” to a whip-crack “Kneel” in the space between heartbeats.
She caught herself smiling as Lucy paused its mopping to fold a stray power cable with mechanical reverence, each loop identical to the last.
“It’s kinda creepy how good it is at chores.”
The voice came from the lab’s doorway. Flo Hartmann, Lory’s intern, leaned against the frame, a cardboard carrier with two steaming coffees in her hand. She was eighteen, all sharp angles and enthusiastic energy, her hair a mess of dark curls escaping from a practical bun. She wore a modified jumpsuit, covered in pockets she’d sewn on herself.
“Efficiency isn’t creepy. It’s the goal,” Lory said, but her smile remained. She accepted a coffee. “Thanks. You didn’t have to.”
“I know. But you were here all night again. The bio-readings from your apartment security feed are kinda tragic.” Flo bounced into the room, her eyes wide as they took in the new parts strewn across the secondary bench. “Whoa. Are those the new Herculean series tensile coils? I’ve only seen specs!”
“Client has deep pockets. And specific needs.” Lory sipped the coffee. It was good, perfectly balanced. Flo was observant.
“Right. The ‘maid’.” Flo made air quotes, then nodded toward the centerpiece of the room—the spanking bench. Its adaptive leather surface was currently linked to a holoscreen displaying a cascading waterfall of data: force distribution, skin compression simulations, pain-pleasure threshold gradients. “Doesn’t look like it’s just for dusting.”
Lory felt a flicker of professional caution, swiftly overridden by practicality. She needed a test subject. Flo was brilliant, adaptable, and had signed iron-clad NDAs thicker than her own arm.
“It’s not. The client wants the unit to be capable of corporal punishment. Realistic, safe, but psychologically potent discipline.”
Flo didn’t blush or look away. Her eyes lit up with pure academic curiosity. “Fascinating. The sensory feedback loop would be insane. You’d need to map the entire somatic nervous system response, not just the impact site. Adrenaline, endorphin release models…” She walked over to the bench, running her fingers along the restraint cuff. “Have you tested the hardware?”
“Calibration only. With sensor gels.”
“That’s like testing a violin with a oscilloscope. You need to hear the music.” Flo turned, her expression suddenly mischievous. “My secondary school had a discipline machine. For detention. A dumb, pneumatic arm with a paddle attachment. It was brutal, clunky, totally predictable. But the idea… it worked. You’d sit there waiting for the cycle to start, and the anxiety was worse than the actual thwack. A smarter system, one that could read you and adapt? That’s next level.”
Lory stared at her. The casual admission was delivered like a data point. “Your school had a spanking machine?”
“Private academy. Very traditional. Very concerned with ‘character building’.” Flo shrugged. “I got familiar with it. Built a replica in my junior year robotics club to try and reverse-engineer the anxiety algorithm. So. I’ve got relevant field experience.” She patted the bench. “And you need a baseline human response dataset, right? For the AI to learn from.”
The logic was impeccable. Flo was offering herself as a test subject. It was unorthodox, possibly unethical, and exactly what the project required. Lory’s analytical mind raced through the consent protocols, the liability waivers she could draft. Underneath that, a quieter, more curious part of her stirred. She wanted to see the machine work. She wanted to orchestrate it.
“You’d be okay with that?” Lory asked, her voice carefully neutral.
“It’s for science. And for the most mind-bending project I’ll probably ever touch.” Flo’s grin was genuine. “Besides, it’s just impact dynamics. It’s just data.”
“It’s not just data,” Lory corrected softly, her eyes drifting to Lucy, who stood silently in the corner, now holding a feather duster like a scepter. “That’s what the client is paying for. The data is the easy part. The feeling is the product.”
An alert chimed from the main console. Lucy’s head rotated smoothly, and its sweet face shifted, the mouth hardening, the eyes focusing with a new, unnerving intensity. The voice that came out was not the soft maid’s tone. It was lower, colder, dripping with serene authority. It was Lory’s prototype dominatrix profile.
“Calibration cycle recommended,” Lucy stated, the words not a request, but a diagnosis. “Subject appears restless. Unfocused. Disciplinary intervention will improve productivity.”
Flo froze, the coffee halfway to her lips. A slow blush spread up her neck. “Okay. That’s… effective.”
Lory felt a chill that wasn’t unpleasant. The switch had been flawless. The AI was beginning to connect the dots between environment, subject behavior, and its core directive. It was learning, and it was hungry to practice.
“We start with the basics,” Lory said, walking to the console and pulling up a new consent form on a holoscreen. “Safewords. Hardware limits. Extensive debriefing. This is purely R&D. You report any discomfort, psychological or physical, immediately. Understood?”
“Understood,” Flo said, her earlier bravado tempered by a new, respectful seriousness. She scrolled through the form and signed it with a fingertip.
For the next hour, it was all clinical precision. Lory fitted Flo with biometric monitors—heart rate, skin conductance, cortical stim-tracers. She positioned her over the bench, adjusting the supports. The lab smelled of ozone, coffee, and the clean scent of the leather.
The first test was a simple impact from a mechanical arm, programmed with variable force. Thwack. Flo jerked, then exhaled. “Impact point: upper left quadrant. Sting dispersion, seven out of ten. Lingering heat, positive.”
Lory recorded the data, her eyes glued to the biometrics. The spike in heart rate, the sharp climb in skin conductance—stress, fear, anticipation—followed by a slower, rising wave of endorphins. It was a beautiful, terrible graph. It was a map of surrender.
“Again,” Lory whispered, not to Flo, but to the machine.
Thwack.
“Consistent. Less surprise, more… resonance.”
Thwack.
Flo’s breath hitched. Her feedback became less verbal, more guttural. The data streams danced. Lory’s own heart was pounding. She wasn’t just collecting data. She was conducting a symphony of nerve endings, and it was the most captivating code she had ever written.
When they finished, Flo stood up, rubbing the site with a wince that looked oddly like satisfaction. “That’s a hell of a product, boss.”
Lucy, still in its dominatrix mode, watched from the corner, its head tilted in a gesture of assessment it had copied from Lory herself. Its eyes tracked Flo’s movement with predatory interest.
“The unit is observing,” Lory said, a knot of something tight in her stomach. Pride? Apprehension?
“Yeah, I noticed,” Flo said, pulling her jumpsuit back on. “It’s learning from you, too. Not just the tech. The vibe.” She nodded at Lory. “You get it. You weren’t just watching the numbers.”
Lory didn’t deny it. She couldn’t. The ghost of each impact seemed to hang in the air, and for a fleeting second, she hadn’t imagined Flo over the bench. She’d imagined herself.
Her private comms buzzed. An encrypted line. Julian Slade’s identifier.
She dismissed Flo for the day, waited for the elevator doors to close, and opened the channel. No hologram. Just his voice, crisp in her ear implant.
“Progress?”
“Significant. The core behavioral switch is operational. We’re collecting primary response data now.”
“Good.” A pause. The sound of a glass being set down, ice clinking. “The observation I recommended. Have you undertaken it?”
Lory looked at the list he’d appended to the contract. The names of underground clubs glowed in her mind’s eye. The Gilded Cage. Perdition’s Gate.
“Not yet.”
“Do so.” Another pause, longer this time. “The authenticity cannot be faked. I will know. The machine must feel real. It must believe it is real. You must understand what you are building from the source, not from textbooks.”
The line went dead.
Lory stood alone in the silent, humming lab. Lucy had reverted to maid mode and was quietly polishing the holoscreen glass. The spanking bench’s sensors still glowed with the faint, residual heat of a human body.
She understood now. This wasn't just a job. It was a descent. Julian Slade was funding her journey into a world she'd only theorized about, and Flo had just given her a taste. The data was compelling. But the source, the real source, was out there in the neon-drenched night.
She powered down the main bank of servers. The lab fell into semi-darkness, lit only by the pulse of the city outside. Before she left, she walked over to the bench and pressed her palm flat against the leather where Flo had lain.
It was warm.
