Chapter 1: Prologue

The neon bleed of midtown painted the wet asphalt in smears of pink and electric blue. Lilith walked the strip with the unhurried glide of something that had all the time in the world, though the thought rankled. Three hours of prowling, and she had fed only on a washed-up musician with a pretty neck and a broken soul. It was like sipping watered wine. Tasteless, thin, and almost offensive.

Her heels clicked a slow rhythm against the pavement as she passed a shuttered laundromat. A pair of drunk college boys stumbled out of a bar across the street, their lifeforce pulsing like cheap birthday candles. She could snuff them both and barely feel the warmth. The thought wasn't worth the effort.

She ran a finger along the garnet at her throat, feeling the faint thrum of stored energy there. The stone was nearly full. It would hold her for another century if she chose to dock its stores. But Lilith didn't collect for the rainy days. She collected because hunger was a crown she wore well, because the flush of stolen vitality made her skin gleam like oiled marble.

A group of women passed her, laughing and clutching each other's elbows. Their scent was a flimsy thing, sweet but shallow. Disappointment coiled in her gut.

She had been at this too long. The city had been drained dry tonight, all the bright souls tucked safely behind their doors, all the mediocre ones stumbling through the dark looking for their next fix. She should quit. Go home to her loft, pour a glass of something amber, and wait for the hunger to fade to a dull ache she could ignore.

Then the scent hit her.

It came from a club two blocks down, a low-slung building with a black iron door and a line winding around the corner. The scent was thick, rich, luxurious, like walking into a vault of aged honey and amber. It coated the back of her throat. It made her mouth water.

Lilith stopped mid-stride. Her heart, which had not raced in decades, gave a sharp gallop.

Her dress rustled as she turned, head tilting like a hound catching a distant howl. She breathed in through her nostrils, savoring the trail. It was not the bright, sharp pulse of a healthy human, nor the muted gold of a seasoned drinker. This was something else. A well so deep the scent alone made her knees weaken.

She glided toward the club, heedless of the eyes that followed her. The line outside the door rippled as she approached, men and women alike turning to watch her pass. She gave them nothing, no smile, no glance. The door heaved open at her touch, the bouncer's protest dying on his lips as she met his eyes for a single beat.

Inside, the club swallowed her.

Bass thumped through the floor, through her heels, into her bones. Purple and crimson lights strobed across a crowd of swaying bodies, their heat pressing against her like a sticky second skin. The scent was stronger here, layered under sweat and perfume and the sour tang of alcohol. It pulled at her, a string tied to her ribs, drawing her deeper into the pulsing dark.

She moved through the dancers like smoke. Her crimson dress caught the light, painting her as a wound against the shadows. A man reached for her waist. She let his fingers skim the fabric, nothing more, and he was left staring at her empty space with a confused, hungry look.

The scent grew thick as she neared the bar. She scanned the silhouettes there, cataloging them in a blink. A heavyset bartender with a belly full of regret. A woman nursing a martini, her aura weak and pink. A cluster of friends laughing at some private joke, their lifeforce pooling into a single mediocre shimmer.

But her eyes caught on a figure at the far end of the bar, tucked into the corner like she was trying to disappear into the shadows. The girl was small, almost swallowed by the stool she sat on. A pink and black striped sweater hung loose around her shoulders. Silver hair tied back in a practical ponytail, a cut that was almost boyish, with a face to match. Androgynous. Pretty in an unassuming way that would vanish in a crowd.

Lilith's nostrils flared.

That girl was a furnace. The lifeforce pouring off her was so dense, so rich, that Lilith felt the heat of it from across the room. It was a slow, vast tide, deep as a river mouth, wide as a sea. It pulsed with a rhythm that matched her heartbeat, steady and inexhaustible.

The succubus found herself smiling despite herself. All that power, wrapped in a shy, plain little package, drinking alone at a bar on her what, seventeenth? Eighteenth birthday?

Lilith ordered a drink she had no intention of drinking. The glass was cold against her fingers, the amber liquid untouched as she studied her prey from the corner of her eye. The girl was nursing a pink cocktail with a tiny umbrella, staring at it like it held the secrets to the universe. She was utterly oblivious to the predator circling her.

This was almost too easy. Too mundane.

And yet.

The girl lifted her head, and for a moment, the purple lights caught her eyes. They weren't brown or blue. They were violet, a rich, impossible shade that sent a curious tremor through Lilith's chest. The girl blinked, and the color submerged, swallowed by the darkness of the club.

Lilith took a sip of her drink. The alcohol burned pleasantly, but her attention never left the shimmering aura of the girl at the bar. She could feel the lifeforce now, tickling the back of her tongue like a promise.

She rose, and the crowd parted for her without conscious thought. The glass was left behind, a red lipstick print on the rim. Her heels clicked against the floor in a rhythm that matched the bass, a slow, predatory cadence.

The girl looked up as she approached. Her eyes widened, and Lilith saw recognition there, not of her, but of an instinct. The girl knew, on some animal level, that something dangerous was walking toward her. But she didn't move. She stayed frozen on her stool, fingers wrapped around her drink, watching Lilith approach with a wary, wide-eyed wonder.

Lilith slid onto the stool beside her, crossing her legs with a deliberate slowness. The crimson silk shifted against her thighs, and she let her smile rise, slow and easy, like the tide coming in.

"Now who might you be, little treasure?"
