Chapter 3: The First Touch
The sterile white light of the assessment room felt like a physical weight pressing down. Bethesda stood frozen beside the intimidating platform, the articulated arms above seeming to hum with anticipation. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic counterpoint to the clinical hum of the air filtration system. The faint smell of ozone and warm plastic was stronger here, cloying. Subjects. Parts uncovered. Kiss others. The words echoed, cold and final.
Before she could voice the protest bubbling in her throat, a section of the wall near the bank of containers hissed open. Not a door, but a seamless panel sliding aside. A low, wheeled gurney glided silently into the room, propelled by unseen mechanics. On it lay a form draped in a crisp, white sheet.
Celeste stepped forward, her movements economical. Without ceremony, she grasped the top edge of the sheet. Jasper remained near the doorframe, arms crossed, his expression unreadable but intensely focused on Bethesda.
The sheet whispered as it was pulled down.
Bethesda’s breath stopped.
It wasn't a full mannequin. It was just a torso. Male. From the collarbones down to where the hips should have been, terminating in smooth, seamless synthetic skin. It lay inert, impossibly real under the harsh lights. Defined pectorals, the sculpted ridges of abdominals, the slight dip of a navel – all rendered in a shade of dusky pink that perfectly mimicked living flesh. Fine, dark chest hair dusted the sternum, catching the light. The skin even looked slightly dewy.
No head. No limbs. Just this disturbingly perfect, isolated slab of masculinity.
"Christ on a cracker," Bethesda breathed, the words escaping in a shaky puff. Her stomach lurched. It wasn't the grotesqueness of the severance alone; it was the perfection. The casual intimacy of the bare chest, the vulnerable curve of a flank. It looked like it should be warm. Like it should breathe.
Celeste ignored the expletive. "Subject Alpha-Seven," she stated, her voice devoid of inflection. She moved to the console, her fingers tapping. Lights embedded in the platform shifted, bathing the torso in a softer, more focused glow. Tiny lenses on the ceiling arms whirred faintly as they adjusted. "Begin with tactile exploration, Mrs. Schumer-Baker. Hands only. We require baseline sensory data before initiating neural integration protocols."
"Tactical explo--? Touch it?" Bethesda stared, her gaze darting from the headless torso to Celeste’s impassive face, then to Jasper's watchful eyes. That treacherous warmth pulsed low in her belly again, tangled with revulsion. "You want me to just... grope a slab of meat?"
"Bioreplicated synth-flesh composite," Jasper corrected smoothly from the doorway, a hint of that earlier amusement back in his voice. "Think of it as high-end market research. Quality control."
Celeste didn’t look up from her screens. "Palms and fingertips. Varying pressure. Note the temperature, texture, elasticity. Verbalize your observations if possible. The sensors will capture physiological feedback." She glanced at Bethesda, her green eyes sharp. "Authentic engagement, remember? Start with the pectoral region."
Bethesda felt a flush creep up her neck. This was beyond absurd. It was degrading. Like fondling a department store mannequin that had skipped leg day. And yet… the promise of money, the sheer, bizarre wrongness of it all, pulled at her. Top dollar. Tuscany. Show them you’re not some squeamish prude.
Gritting her teeth, Bethesda took a step closer to the gurney. The torso lay there, a silent, masculine mockery. She could see the tiny pores in the synthetic skin. The slight variation in pigmentation across the chest. It was unnervingly detailed. She raised a trembling hand, her Passion Plum nails stark against the sterile backdrop.
Just get it over with. Like touching cold cuts. Expensive cold cuts.
Her fingertips brushed the upper curve of the left pectoral muscle.
A small gasp escaped her. It wasn't cold. It was warm. Body-warm. And the texture… it wasn't hard plastic. It yielded slightly, just like living muscle beneath skin. Not quite the give of real flesh, perhaps, but closer than anything she’d ever encountered. The faint, fine hairs tickled her skin. She jerked her hand back.
"Temperature?" Celeste prompted, her gaze fixed on a monitor.
"Warm," Bethesda managed, her voice thick. "Like… skin. Real skin. Maybe a degree cooler?"
"Initial contact registered," Celeste murmured, making a notation. "Texture?"
"Smooth," Bethesda said, forcing herself to look, not at the stump where the neck should be, but at the spot she'd touched. "But… soft? Yielding. Underneath." Like Bo’s chest that time you walked in on him and… She shoved the memory down violently. "The hair… it feels real."
"Good." Celeste’s voice held no praise, only acknowledgment. "Apply moderate pressure. Assess underlying density."
Bethesda took a shaky breath. Authentic engagement. She pressed her palm flat against the center of the torso’s chest. The warmth seeped into her hand. The synthetic muscle compressed slightly beneath her touch, offering realistic resistance. She pushed harder, fascinated despite herself. It felt… solid. Alive. The absurdity warred with a strange, detached curiosity. She moved her palm in a slow circle, feeling the defined ridge of the pectoral muscle beneath the yielding surface. Her thumb brushed a nipple – a small, perfectly formed bud that stiffened slightly at the contact.
She snatched her hand away again, face burning. "It… reacted!"
"Thermal and tactile response," Celeste explained coolly. "Designed mimicry. The areolar tissue contains dense micro-sensors. Continue. Explore the abdominal section. Note the definition."
Bethesda hesitated, her hand hovering over the carved planes of the stomach. This felt less like testing a product and more like violating something intimate. Something that should be attached to a person. Her fingers traced the groove running vertically down the center, the synthetic skin smooth and taut. She pressed into the firmness of an abdominal ridge. It felt… powerful. Like the stomach of a man who took care of himself. Like… No. She wouldn’t go there again.
"This feels… very real," she admitted, her voice quieter now. The initial shock was fading, replaced by a creeping sense of unreality. "The skin stretches, the muscle underneath is firm but not rigid. It… moves like it should." She ran her fingertips lightly over the dusting of hair lower down, near the smooth termination point. It felt exactly like body hair. The sheer, meticulous replication was staggering. And deeply unsettling.
"Excellent baseline," Celeste said. A faint, almost imperceptible click came from the console. "Physiological markers indicate elevated stress response coupled with… heightened arousal." She finally looked directly at Bethesda, her green eyes analytical. "Fascinating correlation. Proceed to the flank. Palpate the oblique musculature."
Heightened arousal? The flush on Bethesda’s neck deepened. She could feel it. That persistent, unwelcome warmth, coiling tighter despite the dread. It’s the absurdity. The adrenaline. Not… that.
She moved her hand to the side of the torso, pressing her fingers into the space between the ribs and the hip-simulant curve. The synthetic flesh yielded, firm beneath her touch. She could imagine the muscle sliding, contracting. It was disturbingly… anatomical.
Jasper shifted his weight against the doorframe. "Getting the hang of it, Bethesda?" His tone was light, but his eyes held that predatory gleam. "Looks like you’ve got a knack for hands-on product evaluation."
Bethesda ignored him, focusing on the task, on the strange feel of the synth-flesh beneath her hand. She explored the curve of the simulated hip, the smooth transition to nothingness. Her thumb brushed the edge where the synthetic skin met the sterile white padding of the gurney. The contrast was jarring.
Then, beneath her palm, pressed against the torso's flank, she felt it.
A faint throb.
Rhythmic. Slow.
Like a pulse.
She froze, her blood turning to ice.
"Celeste," her voice was a dry rasp. "It's... pulsing."
Celeste didn't look surprised. "Cardiovascular simulation protocol engaged. Necessary for accurate neural interface calibration." She tapped her screen. "Heart rate steady at sixty beats per minute. Mimics basal rhythm. Enhances realism for sensory integration."
A heartbeat. In this headless, limbless slab. Bethesda stared, horrified, as she saw the subtle rise and fall begin in the chest cavity she'd just been touching. It was shallow, barely there, but unmistakable. The torso was breathing.
Her hand was still pressed against its side. She could feel the gentle expansion against her palm with each simulated breath. The warmth. The yielding flesh. The throb of a phantom pulse. The scent of warm plastic and ozone suddenly felt suffocating. The sterile room tilted.
"Authentic engagement is proceeding optimally," Celeste observed, her voice cutting through Bethesda’s daze. The scientist’s green eyes locked onto hers, devoid of empathy, filled only with clinical interest. "Now, Mrs. Schumer-Baker," she said, her words precise and chilling. "Would you like to feel it breathe against your lips?"
"Feel its breath?" Bethesda choked out, recoiling as if burned. The headless thing’s chest rose and fell, a grotesque pantomime of life. Her hand tingled where the phantom pulse had throbbed. "On my lips? Honey, the last thing that breathed on my lips was Harold’s poodle trying to share my prosciutto." Her voice cracked, high and strained, belying the attempt at levity. Revulsion warred with a sickening prickle of that unwelcome, persistent warmth low in her belly.
Jasper chuckled softly from the doorway, the sound grating. "Authenticity has its price, Bethesda. And its… sensations." He pushed off the frame, taking a step into the room, his gaze predatory. "Think of it as method acting. For science. And Tuscany."
Celeste watched her, unblinking, those green eyes dissecting her panic. "The offer stands. A direct sensory baseline for the respiratory mimicry. Vital for integration." She gestured towards the breathing torso. "Your physiological readings show significant engagement. Capitalize on it."
Bethesda stared at the smooth stump where a neck should be, the rise and fall so unnervingly human. Kissing it felt like the absolute nadir. Lower than Harold’s interpretive dance phase. Lower than finding Bo tangled with Janice from accounting on the conference room floor. The villa shimmered, a desperate, golden mirage. Life-altering money. Escape from the ghosts of husbands and the echoes of her children's failures. She squeezed her eyes shut, seeing Brenda’s tear-streaked defiance, Bo’s careless smirk.
She took a shuddering breath, the scent of ozone and warm plastic thick in her lungs. "Fine," she spat, the word tasting like ash. "Fine! Bring on the headless make-out session. But if it tries French, I’m billing for hazard pay." She opened her eyes, meeting Celeste’s cool stare with defiance, masking the tremor in her hands.
Celeste gave a minute nod, almost imperceptible. She tapped her console. The subtle lights around the torso dimmed. The panel in the wall hissed open again. The gurney glided soundlessly backward, the breathing torso disappearing into the wall cavity like a nightmare receding.
Before Bethesda could exhale her shaky relief, the panel hissed once more. The same gurney glided back out. But the form beneath the crisp white sheet was different. Larger. More defined.
Celeste stepped forward. Her hand grasped the sheet’s edge. She pulled it down with the same detached efficiency.
Bethesda’s gasp echoed sharply in the humming room.
It was the same torso – the dusky pink skin, the defined pectorals dusted with fine dark hair, the sculpted abdomen. But now, attached seamlessly, were powerful arms and legs, the musculature evident even in repose. The termination points were gone, replaced by disturbing wholeness. And crowning it… a head. But not fully revealed. A sterile, opaque black cloth hood covered it completely, pulled taut from the crown down to the bridge of the nose.
Only the lower half of the face was exposed. Strong jawline. Clean-shaven. And the mouth.
Full, sculpted lips, parted slightly. A hint of even, white teeth just visible behind them. Utterly still. Utterly perfect. Utterly inhuman in its stillness.
"Subject Alpha-Seven, Enhanced Configuration," Celeste announced. "Full motor and sensory simulation capability. Neural integration protocols are live." She gestured towards the mouth. "Proceed as discussed, Mrs. Schumer-Baker. Begin with tactile exploration of the facial region. Lips. Note texture, temperature, responsiveness. Authentic engagement is critical."
Bethesda stared, rooted to the spot. The complete limbs made it infinitely worse. It looked like a man. A stunningly built, unconscious man. Hooded. Waiting. The earlier absurdity of kissing a torso evaporated, replaced by a chilling intimacy. This felt like violating a prisoner. Or a corpse.
"Jesus wept," she whispered, the bravado draining away. Her gaze fixed on those perfect, motionless lips. They looked soft. Vulnerable. Bo’s lips, before he said something devastatingly charming and utterly false. The warmth between her legs flared, sharp and confusing, tangled with cold dread. "You want me to... just... kiss it? While it's... hooded?"
Jasper moved closer, stopping a few feet away. His presence felt like a wall. "Think of the hood as focus," he said, his voice smooth, hypnotic. "Eliminates distraction. Allows you to concentrate purely on the sensory input. The quality of the replication." He nodded towards the mouth. "It won’t bite. Unless programmed to, of course." His smile didn’t reach his eyes.
Celeste was already at her console, monitors flickering to life, displaying complex waveforms and scrolling data. "Elevated cortisol. Adrenaline spike. Heart rate accelerating." She didn't look up. "Proceed before the stress response compromises the data. Palpate the lower lip. Initial pressure: light."
Bethesda’s legs felt like lead. The sterile light gleamed on the exposed skin, on the silent lips. The villa seemed a million miles away, obscured by the black hood and the sheer, terrifying reality of the task. Authentic engagement. For science. For Tuscany. For escape from the mess she was born into and perpetuated. She remembered the yielding warmth of the synth-flesh under her hand earlier. The impossible pulse. The breathing.
Gritting her teeth until her jaw ached, Bethesda forced herself forward. One step. Then another. The click of her heel on the polished floor sounded obscenely loud. She stopped beside the gurney, level with the hooded head. She could smell it now, beneath the ozone and plastic – a faint, clean, soapy scent overlay, artificial but disconcertingly pleasant. Up close, the lips looked even more real. The subtle curve, the slight moisture sheen.
Her hand trembled violently as she raised it. Passion Plum nails stark against the clinical white of the room, the warm dusk of the synth-skin. She hesitated, inches away.
"Do it," Jasper murmured, a quiet command.
Bethesda closed her eyes for a fraction of a second, searching for the flamboyant armor, finding only raw fear and a terrifying thread of curiosity. She opened them, focused on the perfect cupid's bow of the upper lip.
Her fingertip, trembling, brushed the very center of the lower lip.
It was warm. Soft. Incredibly soft. Like the petal of some exotic, forbidden flower. Yielding, yet with an underlying firmness. It felt exactly like real skin. Real lips.
A tiny, involuntary sound escaped her – a whimper caught in her throat. The data console hummed.
"Temperature?" Celeste’s voice was a distant buzz.
"Warm," Bethesda breathed, unable to look away from where her finger touched the still mouth. "So soft. Like… real. Warmer than the chest was."
"Initial texture assessment?"
"Smooth. Silky." Bethesda dragged her fingertip slowly along the lower lip towards the corner. The texture was flawless. "No… no dryness. Feels… alive." The word tasted like betrayal.
"Apply moderate pressure. Assess underlying structure."
Bethesda pressed down gently with her fingertip. The flesh compressed, resilient, springing back instantly when she lessened the pressure. She could feel the subtle definition of the orbicularis oris muscle beneath. It was astonishing.
"Firm underneath," she murmured, mesmerized despite herself. "Resilient. Like…" Like Bo’s. She cut the thought dead.
"Good." Celeste’s voice held a note of… satisfaction? "Now, Mrs. Schumer-Baker. The kiss. Light contact. Lips only. Maintain for three seconds. We require mucosal interaction data."
Bethesda froze. Her finger still rested near the corner of that perfect, motionless mouth. Kiss it. Kiss the hooded thing. The reality slammed into her. Her breath hitched.
"Three seconds," Celeste repeated, her tone allowing no argument. "Initiate contact."
Bethesda’s heart hammered against her ribs like a frantic drum. The sterile air tasted metallic. The warm, soapy scent of the specimen filled her nostrils. She looked from the hooded face to Jasper’s intense, expectant stare, then to Celeste’s cool, analytical profile bent over the screens.
The villa. The money. The escape. Brenda’s failures. Bo’s betrayals. The uncanny softness under her fingertip.
Gathering every shred of her fractured courage, Bethesda Schumer-Baker leaned down. Slowly. Trembling. Her own lips parted slightly. She closed her eyes, unable to look at the hood as she brought her face closer to the exposed mouth of the thing on the gurney.
Her lips touched its lower lip. Soft. Warm. Unmoving. As she pulled away, the lips continued searching, but the motion wasn't for lips. It was for... "Oh God." Bethesda gasped. "Is it trying to suckle my... Can I?" She asked. She wasn't sure who she was asking for permission. But the thought of those lips suckling...
