Chapter 2: The Garage Encounter
The garage door was down, sealing Derek in his sanctuary of polished concrete and gleaming tools. The scent of motor oil and sawdust was a familiar comfort, a masculine tonic against the unease still humming in his veins since Jessica drove away. He ran a palm over the smooth oak of the half-finished bookshelf, trying to focus on the next cut, the next joint. Trying to forget the look in her green eyes.
A rumble outside, the crunch of gravel under tires. Headlights washed over the sealed door.
His heart gave a hard, single thud. He knew it was her even before the engine cut. He stood frozen, a chisel in his hand, as a soft knock rattled the side door.
He opened it. She stood there, the dusk now full night behind her, haloed by the bug-specked yellow of the porch light. She held up a folded piece of paper, her smile a slash of white in the shadows.
“Sorry,” Jessica said, her voice a conspirator’s whisper. “I forgot the bill of sale. For the warranty.”
It was a flimsy excuse, transparent as glass. They both knew it. Derek stared at her, the chisel heavy in his hand. He should say he’d mail it. He should call through the house for Marianne. He did neither. The part of him that craved the thrilling, dangerous current her presence carried swung the door open wider.
“Right,” he said, his voice gravel. “Come in.”
She stepped inside, and the garage felt instantly smaller, warmer. The overhead fluorescent light flickered, casting a jerking dance of shadows. She didn’t look at the paper. She looked at him, her gaze dropping to his lips, then lower.
“It’s quiet,” she observed.
“Marianne’s watching TV.”
“Good.” Jessica took a step closer. The floral perfume cut through the oil and pine. She reached out, not for the paper, but for the chisel. She took it from his stiff fingers and placed it on the workbench with a deliberate click. The sound was final.
Then her hands were on his chest, warm through his cotton shirt, sliding up to his shoulders. “I couldn’t stop thinking about you,” she breathed, her mouth inches from his. “About this.”
He should stop her. The word was there, formed in his mind. Stop. It died unspoken as her lips found his. They were softer than he’d imagined, and hungrier. Her tongue pushed past his teeth, tasting of mint and smoke. A moan built in his throat, a sound of pure, shocked surrender.
His hands, which had hung uselessly at his sides, rose to her hips. He pulled her against him, feeling the voluptuous swell of her body, the hard buckle of his belt digging into his stomach. The rational world—the bookshelf, the marriage, the fifty-five years of decency—shrank to a pinprick of light and then winked out.
She broke the kiss, her green eyes blazing with a predatory gleam. “You want this,” she stated, not asking.
He could only nod, a rough, jerking movement.
With a swiftness that stole his breath, she turned him, pushing him back against the sharp edge of the workbench. The wood dug into his spine. Her fingers went to the button of his jeans, fumbling only for a second before it popped open. The zipper hissed down.
“Let me see you,” she murmured, and her hand slid inside his boxers, wrapping around his cock. He was already fully hard, aching. Her touch was electric, knowing. “Fuck, Derek.”
She sank to her knees on the concrete floor, not caring about the dust or the grime. She didn’t tease. She took him into her mouth in one smooth, deep motion, her lips forming a tight, wet seal around his shaft.
A choked gasp escaped him. His hands flew to the edge of the bench, knuckles white. The sensations were overpowering: the incredible heat of her mouth, the flicking, insistent pressure of her tongue along his frenulum, the sight of her blonde hair falling around her face as she bobbed her head. Her eyes were locked on his, watching him unravel. He tangled a hand in her hair, not guiding, just holding on as the pleasure built, raw and urgent.
He was close, too quickly, a tidal wave gathering in his core. “Jessica… I’m gonna…”
She pulled off with a wet pop, her lips slick and swollen. “Not yet,” she said, her voice husky. She stood up, her own breathing ragged. She yanked her tight t-shirt over her head, then unfastened her jeans, shoving them and her panties down her hips in one frantic motion. She was bare underneath, voluptuous and glorious in the flickering light. “I need you inside me. Now.”
She turned around, bending over the workbench, gripping the far edge. The curve of her ass was pale and perfect, presented to him. “Come on,” she growled over her shoulder. “Fuck me. I’ve been thinking about this since I dropped those goddamn keys.”
Any last pretense of resistance evaporated. He positioned himself behind her, his hands gripping her hips. He pushed the head of his cock against her entrance, finding her wet and ready. With a grunt, he drove into her in one deep, merciless stroke.
She cried out, a sharp, guttural sound that was half-pain, all pleasure. “Yes! Oh fuck, yes! Just like that!”
He set a brutal pace, his hips slamming against her flesh, the sound of their bodies connecting a sharp, rhythmic slap in the echoing garage. The workbench shuddered with each thrust, tools rattling. His world narrowed to the sensation of her tight heat gripping him, the sight of her back arching, the smell of sex and perfume and his own sweat mingling with the motor oil.
“Harder,” she demanded, pushing back against him. “Use me, Derek. Fucking use me.”
He obeyed, his fingers digging into her soft hips, driving into her with a force that was almost violence. It was raw, filthy, and utterly consuming. The guilt was there, a spectator in the back of his mind, but it was drowned out by the roaring in his blood, the primal need to claim this, to take this dangerous, offering youth.
He felt her climax begin, her inner muscles clenching around him in rhythmic pulses. Her cries became incoherent screams, muffled against her own arm. The intensity tipped him over the edge. With a final, shuddering thrust, he buried himself deep and came, a hot, pulsing release that seemed to drain every ounce of strength from his body.
He collapsed forward over her back, spent, his head resting between her shoulder blades. Their sweat-slick skin stuck together. The only sounds were their ragged breaths and the hum of the overhead light.
Slowly, reality seeped back in. The cool air on his back. The hard press of the bench against his back. The metallic taste of guilt, fresh and sharp on his tongue.
Jessica straightened up gently, and he slipped out of her. She turned, her face flushed, her makeup smudged. She looked at him, her expression unreadable for a moment. Then she smiled, a slow, satisfied curve of her lips. She leaned in and kissed him, deep and slow, tasting herself on him.
“See?” she whispered against his mouth. “I knew you wanted it.”
She disentangled herself, picking her clothes off the floor with a calm efficiency that felt surreal. He watched, numb, as she dressed. He fumbled with his own jeans, his fingers clumsy.
“I should go,” she said, her voice back to its normal cadence, as if they’d just shared a coffee. “My sitter’s waiting.”
He nodded, unable to form words.
At the side door, she paused. “That bookshelf’s coming along nice,” she said, nodding toward his project. Then her green eyes met his, holding the memory of what they’d just done. “Maybe I’ll see you next weekend. I could use a new bookshelf.”
She slipped out into the night. The door clicked shut behind her.
Derek stood alone in the center of his garage. The space felt different now, violated somehow, or perhaps revealed. The scent of sex was thick in the air, a blatant confession. He looked at the workbench, imagining the imprints of their bodies. He thought of Marianne, just on the other side of the wall, watching her television shows in innocent contentment.
A cold dread settled in his stomach, heavier than any pleasure. He walked to the sink in the corner and turned on the tap, scrubbing his hands with industrial soap until they were raw, trying to wash away the smell, the feel, the undeniable truth of it. But it was under his skin now, in his blood. He looked at his reflection in the dark window above the sink—a ghost of a man, a stranger—and knew nothing would ever be the same. The first domino had fallen, and he could only watch, paralyzed, as the rest began to tumble in the silent, waiting dark.
