Chapter 1: Introduction
The air was thick with the scent of popcorn and the dull hum of conversation on the other side of the glass doors. Ewelina pushed them open with a confident flick of her wrist, the small bell jingling softly in response. She loved the way the cool air from the cinema hit her skin, raising goosebumps on her arms and making the ends of her red hair dance. She stepped inside, her heels clicking on the worn carpet, eyes scanning the familiar lobby.
The old cinema was her favorite place to meet up with her boyfriend.
It was a dimly lit sanctuary, a world away from the bustling city outside. Plush velvet seats and buttery popcorn, the scent of which always managed to make her mouth water. The walls were adorned with posters of upcoming films, promises of escape and adventure. She loved the way the velvet curtains parted to reveal the glowing screen, like a grand reveal at a theater.
Ewelina walked up to the counter, her eyes scanning the movie times. She was early, as usual. She heard a soft "Excuse me, miss?" from behind the counter. She turned, her eyes meeting those of the staff member.
He was handsome, with a confident smile and a gleam in his eye that suggested he knew it. He leaned against the counter, his tone smooth and slightly playful. "You're new here, aren't you?" he said, his gaze flicking over her tattoos and the playful way her red hair was styled.
Ewelina raised an eyebrow, a small smirk playing at the corners of her mouth. "Is that a line?" she asked, her voice laced with amusement.
The staff member chuckled, shaking his head. "Not a line, just an observation.
You have a... unique look about you," he said, his eyes lingering on her tattoos. "I'm Dylan, by the way," he added, extending a hand towards her.
Ewelina hesitated for a moment before taking his hand. "Ewelina," she said, her voice steady despite the sudden warmth that spread through her at his touch. She pulled her hand back, her eyes narrowing playfully. "And I'm not new here. I've been coming to this cinema for years."
Dylan lean in, a smirk on his face.
"Well, Ewelina, it's a pleasure to officially meet you then. I must have missed you in the darkness."
Ewelina laughed, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "Or you were just making a move on every redhead that walked in."
Dylan feigned offense, placing a hand over his heart. "Ouch, that hurts. I assure you, my moves are selective. And I'm always right."
Ewelina rolled her eyes but couldn't help the smile tugging at her lips. She glanced at her watch, her boyfriend was running late again. She leaned against the counter, her arms crossed over her chest.
"Well, Dylan, lucky for you, I'm already taken." She couldn't help the teasing lilt in her voice.
Dylan's smirk never faltered. "Ah, I see. A brave man, then. Not many can handle a woman like you."
Ewelina laughed, a low, husky sound that made Dylan's smirk widen. "You don't know the half of it," she said, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
Just then, the bell above the door jingled, and Ewelina's boyfriend walked in.
He looked around, his eyes landing on her first, a warm smile spreading across his face. He was an average-looking man, but Ewelina found him sexier than anyone else she'd ever met. There was something in the way his eyes crinkled at the corners when he smiled, something in the way he carried himself with quiet confidence.
"Hey, you," he said, walking over to her. He leaned in for a quick kiss, his hand resting on the small of her back. "Sorry I'm late."
Ewelina smiled up at him, her eyes twinkling. "No worries.
I was just getting to know this charming staff member Dylan here," Ewelina said, nodding towards Dylan. Her boyfriend's eyes flicked to Dylan, sizing him up before they returned to Ewelina, a playful glint in his eyes.
"Charming, huh? I must be losing my touch," he said, his voice laced with amusement.
Dylan chuckled, extending a hand towards him. "Dylan. And you must be the lucky guy."
Ewelina's boyfriend shook his hand, a smirk on his face. "That's me. Keith.
Nice to meet you, Dylan. You're doing a great job here, keeping my girl entertained while I'm late."
Dylan laughed, leaning back against the counter. "Ah, yes, the infamous Keith. Well, it was a pleasure, Ewelina. Maybe next time, we'll get to meet under different circumstances." His gaze lingered on her for a moment before he turned to Keith, his smile still in place. "Enjoy the movie, you two."
Ewelina watched Dylan walk away, a small smile playing on her lips. She turned to Jake, her eyes sparkling. "You know, he was trying to flirt with me.
I think I could have had another date." Ewelina teased, her voice light and playful as she linked arms with Keith and led him towards the ticket counter.
Keith laughed, a warm sound that made Ewelina's heart flutter. "Is that so? And what makes you think he would have stood a chance?" he asked, his eyes gleaming with amusement.
Ewelina shrugged, her smile never wavering. "He was charming, I'll give him that. And he had nice eyes."
Keith raised an eyebrow, a playful smirk tugging at the corners of his mouth. "Nice eyes, huh?
I think I have a few nice things myself," Keith said, his voice low as he leaned in closer to her. Ewelina laughed, her cheeks flushing slightly at his closeness.
"Yeah, you do. But your eyes aren't the only thing I like about you," she said, her voice softening as she reached up to tuck a stray strand of hair behind his ear.
Keith's hand reached up to cover hers, his thumb tracing gentle circles on her wrist. "Good. Because I like every part of you."
Ewelina felt a shiver run down her spine at his words, her breath hitching slightly.
She loved it when he said things like that, loved the way his touch made her feel. She looked up at him, her eyes softening. "You always know what to say," she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper.
Keith's eyes darkened, the playful glint replaced by a deeper, more intense look. "I try," he said, his voice low. He leaned in closer, his lips brushing against hers in a soft, lingering kiss. Ewelina closed her eyes, melting into the moment.
Just then, the bell above the door jingled again, interrupting their moment.
A group of teenagers walked in, their laughter echoing through the lobby as they made their way towards the candy counter. Ewelina and Keith pulled away, their eyes meeting in a shared moment of understanding. They were both eager to get to the movie, but also reluctant to leave the warmth of their connection.
"Come on, let's get our tickets," Ewelina said, her voice playful as she nudged Keith gently.
Keith smiled, placing his hand on the small of her back as they walked towards the ticket counter. He leaned in, his voice low in her ear.
"Want to make it interesting? Loser buys popcorn."
Ewelina laughed, her eyes sparkling with amusement and challenge. "Deal," she said, holding out her hand. Keith grinned, shaking her hand firmly.
As they waited in line to buy their tickets, Ewelina couldn't shake the feeling that she was being watched. She glanced over her shoulder, her eyes scanning the lobby. She caught a glimpse of Dylan, still behind the counter, his gaze on her. He winked, sending a shiver down her spine. She quickly looked away, a small smile playing on her lips.
She loved the thrill of flirtation, but she was loyal to Keith. That was one of the things she loved most about him—he understood her, accepted her as she was, and never tried to change her.
Keith nudged her gently, pulling her attention back to the present. "You okay, Ewelina? You're a million miles away," he asked, his voice soft.
She shrugged, giving him a small smile. "Just daydreaming. Don't worry about me."
Keith raised an eyebrow but didn't press the issue. They stepped up to the counter, their hands brushing as they reached for their wallets simultaneously.
Keith grinned, dropping his hand to allow Ewelina to pay first. She shot him a playful glare before handing over the cash for their tickets. The cashier, a young woman with bright blue hair and a nose ring, handed them their tickets with a smile.
"Enjoy the movie, you two," she said, her eyes flicking between them with a hint of envy.
