Chapter 1: Introduction
Claudia hustled through the bustling subway station, her feet clad in sturdy brown shoes that clicked on the cold tiles. She was a small woman, her five-foot-two frame dwarfed by the towering concrete pillars and the sea of gray suits that rushed past her. The air was a familiar blend of damp earth and ozone, a scent that always made her feel like she was being hugged by the city.
She tugged at the collar of her brown jacket, adjusting it over the white blouse beneath. The jacket was a bit snug, but it was her favorite, the one that made her feel like she could take on the world.
Underneath, her blue sweater was soft and worn, her white undershirt crisp and new. She'd paired it with her best jeans, the ones that hugged her curves in all the right places, and her white socks, the ones with the little pink hearts that peeked out from her shoes. She'd even put on her anklet, the one with the tiny silver bells that jingled as she walked.
She was a sight, a walking contradiction of casual comfort and conscious style, a testament to the art of layering on a chilly autumn day.
Her hair, a cascade of brown-black waves, was long and feel onto her shoulders. She clutched her purse tightly under her arm, her fingers drumming a nervous beat against the leather.
As she approached the turnstile, she fumbled in her pocket for her MetroCard. The machine beeped, the turnstile clacked, and she stepped through, her shoes squeaking slightly on the slick floor. She was almost home free.
Almost.
A tall, broad-shouldered man in a dark uniform stood at the exit, his eyes scanning the crowd.
He was the first security guard she'd encounter, his face just a touch too stern for comfort. He held a pair of heavy-duty scissors in his hand, their blades glinting under the harsh fluorescent lights.
"Ma'am, please step this way," he said, his voice a deep rumble.
Claudia paused, her brows furrowing in confusion. "Excuse me? I'm just trying to get home."
The guard gave her a curt nod. "Standard procedure, ma'am. New security protocols."
She sighed, her shoulders sagging in resignation.
"Okay, what do I need to do?"
Claudia asked, giving the guard a tentative smile.
The guard's expression didn't change. "Please remove your jacket," he said, the scissors in his hand hovering menacingly.
Claudia's eyes widened. "You're cutting off my jacket?"
"Standard procedure, ma'am," he repeated, his voice firm.
"Please raise your arms."
Before Claudia could protest, the guard reached out, his hands deftly lifting her jacket. The scissors snipped with a sharp, decisive sound, the fabric parting easily. Cold air kissed her skin as he sliced through the sleeves, cutting her brown jacket off her body. She gasped, her arms automatically crossing over her chest to hide her white blouse underneath.
"What the hell was that for?" she exclaimed, her eyes wide with disbelief.
The guard ignored her, his face impassive. "Next," he said, gesturing to the line of people behind her.
Claudia stood frozen, her jacket now a pile of cloth at her feet. She looked down at her exposed arms, goosebumps rising on her skin. This was ridiculous, she thought, but she could see no end to this charade.
