Chapter 1: The Unseen Audience
The glow from the ring light softened the sharp angles of Jenny’s face as she leaned into the camera, a fluffy brush poised like a wand. “And this, you guys, is the magic,” she said, her voice a bright, conspiratorial whisper. “A little highlighter right here on the cupid’s bow, and bam! You’ve just kissed a fairy.” She dabbed the shimmering powder and pursed her lips, blowing a kiss to the livestream’s chat window, where hearts and fire emojis bloomed in a rapid, scrolling garden.
“You’re a goddess, Jenny!” popped up from user LunaNight87.
“What lip color is that?” asked MakeupMaven22.
Jenny grinned, tilting her head. “It’s called ‘Cherry Pop,’ and I’ve linked it below! Okay, my loves, I think that’s a wrap! This smoky eye is done and I am done. Remember, you’re all gorgeous exactly as you are, but a little glitter never hurt anybody.” She gave a double peace sign, her sparkling eyelids catching the light. “Love you, bye! Stream ending in three, two…”
She reached forward, her fingers eclipsing the lens for a second before the status light on the camera switched from red to a steady, unblinking green. She didn’t notice. The fan on her laptop whirred, but the chat had frozen, the last congratulatory messages now static ghosts on the screen. She exhaled, the performer’s buoyant energy leaving her body in one long, tired sigh.
“Ugh, finally,” she muttered to the empty, steam-scented air.
She stood, stretching her arms over her head. The silky robe she wore over her workout clothes gaped open. With quick, efficient motions, she pulled the tie loose and shrugged the robe off, letting it puddle on the gleaming tile floor. Her back was to the camera, a detail that would later seem monstrously significant. She reached behind her, unhooked her bra with a practiced twist, and slid the straps down her arms. She tossed the lace garment onto the growing pile without a glance.
The leggings were next. She hooked her thumbs in the waistband and peeled them down her legs, stepping out of them one foot at a time. A pair of inside-out panties followed, a tiny, intimate flag dropped on the battlefield of her evening. Completely naked now, she padded toward the shower, her reflection a blurry suggestion in the frosted glass of the enclosure.
She turned the taps. A hiss, then a roar, as water began to jet from the chrome showerhead. Steam immediately curled, clouding the glass, but the condensation was patchy, a slow-creeping veil. For a moment, as she stepped in and pulled the door shut behind her, her form was a dark, graceful silhouette against the bright white tile. A limb raised, an arch of the back, the vague suggestion of hair being swept up into a knot. Then the steam thickened, softening the edges, dissolving the details into a warm, private haze.
On the laptop screen, the green light remained. The scene in the bathroom was perfectly framed, perfectly still, save for the figure moving behind the misted glass.
---
Across the neighborhood, in a bedroom lit only by the stark blue of a monitor, Mark’s breath hitched. He had been perched on the edge of his ergonomic chair for forty-three minutes, watching her talk about primer and blending techniques. He liked the educational parts well enough, but he loved the in-between moments more: when she’d laugh at a comment, when she’d lean back to assess her work, the way she’d sometimes bite her lower lip in concentration.
The “Stream Ended” message never appeared on his screen.
His eyes, dry and unblinking, darted from the frozen chat to Jenny’s now-empty stool. When she stood and the robe came off, a slow, thick heat spread through his gut. His hand, which had been resting on his thigh, clenched into a fist. As she stripped, a low, involuntary sound escaped his throat—a hybrid of a sigh and a grunt. This was new. This was different. This wasn’t a curated image or a playful glance at the camera. This was a threshold being crossed without her knowing.
He watched, utterly still, as she walked toward the shower. The nape of her neck. The dip of her spine. The gentle swell of her hip. The steam obscured her, but his mind filled in every blurred contour with exquisite, lurid detail. It felt like a gift. A secret meant only for him. She was so trusting, so blissfully unaware. The thought made his heart hammer against his ribs.
Slowly, his hand moved from his thigh to the front of his jeans. He was already hard, a tight, aching pressure against the denim. He unbuttoned his fly with trembling fingers, the sound of the metal teeth separating abnormally loud in the quiet room. His breathing became shallow, ragged, syncing with the rhythmic sound of the shower spray he imagined through his speakers. He never took his eyes off the screen, off the ghostly shape moving behind the glass.
This was better than he’d ever dreamed. This was real.
In her bathroom, Jenny hummed under the torrent of hot water, her face upturned, rinsing away the layers of foundation and sparkle. She was thinking about ordering sushi, about the neglected laundry in the hamper, about the funny comment from LunaNight87. The world beyond the shower door was soft focus and unimportant.
Mark’s other hand snaked toward his keyboard. With a few precise clicks, he captured a screenshot. Then another. The images saved to a folder deep in his system, a folder with other, less explicit, but no less obsessive archives. He stroked himself faster, his gaze fixed on the obscured figure, on the intimate clutter of her clothes on the floor—the bra, the inside-out panties. His neighborhood. His Jenny. His secret.
The shower cut off abruptly. The silhouette behind the glass moved, a hand wiping a clear streak in the condensation. A flash of a shoulder, a curve of a calf. Mark leaned forward, his movement frantic, desperate to see more before the vision ended.
Jenny pulled the shower door open, a billow of steam rushing out into the cooler air of the bathroom. She reached for a towel from the warm rack, wrapping it around herself, tucking the end securely above her chest. She stepped onto the bath mat, wiggling her toes in the plush fabric, and finally, finally, looked toward her laptop.
Her face, flushed and clean, was serene. She was thinking about lotion, about pajamas.
Then her eyes flicked to the camera. To the small, unwavering green light.
Her smile faltered. A tiny line appeared between her brows. She took a step closer, head tilting, the damp ends of her hair brushing her bare shoulders. She leaned in, peering at the dim red recording indicator now replaced by that steady, silent green. Her own face, puzzled and fresh-scrubbed, looked back at her from the darkened screen.
Her breath caught.
In his room, Mark saw her expression change. The intimacy shattered, replaced by dawning confusion. He stopped moving, his hand stilling. A cold spike of adrenaline shot through the heat in his veins. She was realizing. She was seeing.
Jenny’s hand shot out, fumbling for the mouse. The cursor, a small arrow, skittered across the screen. She clicked on the streaming software interface, her movements suddenly sharp and panicked. The software window collapsed, vanishing from her desktop.
On Mark’s screen, the live feed dissolved into black, replaced at last by the official, sterile platform message: “This stream has ended.”

The silence in his room was absolute, thick and suffocating.
