Jessica accidentally sees her best friend Cane naked and develops feelings for him.

Chapter 2: The Dream and the Awakening

The dream dissolved not with a gasp, but with a slow, syrupy unwinding, leaving Jessica tangled in damp sheets and a deeper, more insistent heat. Her bedroom was dark, just the sickly yellow pool of the bedside lamp she’d forgotten to turn off. The air was still, thick, and it smelled like him.

Not like he was here, but like the ghost of him had imprinted on her space. Rain on warm pavement. The sharp, clean edge of his soap. It was in her pillows, on the skin of her neck where in the dream he’d buried his face.

Her heart was a frantic drum against her ribs. She was on her back, one arm flung over her head, the thin cotton of her sleep shirt twisted up around her waist. The memory of the dream was physical, a series of impressions more than images: the rough warmth of his hands sliding up her thighs, the weight of his body pressing her down, the low, wrecked sound of her own voice begging for something she couldn’t name.

A throbbing ache pulsed between her legs, a raw, empty need that made her shift against the mattress. The friction was a shock, a bolt of pure sensation that arched her back. Her eyes screwed shut.

“Fuck,” she breathed into the empty room, the word raw and unfamiliar on her tongue.

This was Cane. Her best friend. The guy who’d eaten pizza off her floor and laughed about it. The same one whose naked body was now a curated, high-definition fantasy her mind kept replaying on a loop—the water on his skin, the definition of his stomach, the shadowed line of hip leading downward.

She tried to think about deadlines. About client revisions. About the leaky faucet in her kitchen sink.

It was useless. The throb between her legs was a demanding, rhythmic counterpoint to every rational thought. Her own breath was loud in the quiet. She was slick, she could feel it, a hot dampness that had nothing to do with sweat.

Her hand, moving of its own volition, drifted down from her stomach. Her fingertips brushed through the curls at the apex of her thighs, a timid, trembling touch.

She jerked her hand away as if burned, pressing it flat against her own hipbone. This was pathetic. This was insane. She was touching herself, in her own bed, because she’d seen her friend naked. A friend who was probably asleep right now, completely unaware that he’d become the star of her most explicit, uninvited fantasy.

But the image wouldn’t leave. It solidified behind her eyelids: Cane, not at the window, but here, in this bed, his warm brown eyes dark with an intensity she’d never seen, his mouth on her skin. The dream-version of his voice, a gravelly whisper. You watched, Jess. You looked.

A shudder wracked her, part shame, part pure, undiluted lust. Her resolve, brittle and thin, snapped.

Her hand slid back down, decisively this time. She let her fingers part her, finding the swollen, aching heart of her need. A sharp, startled moan punched out of her the moment she made contact. Her touch was clumsy, desperate. She circled her clit, the pressure too light, then too rough, her movements fueled by a frantic hunger rather than any skill.

It wasn’t enough. It was her own clumsy hand, and she wanted his. She wanted the rough, calloused pads of his fingers, the strength in them. She wanted him to know how wet he made her, how her body was betraying a decade of friendship for a single, stolen glance.

She imagined it was him. She pushed two fingers inside herself with a ragged gasp, her body clenching tight around the intrusion. It was a poor imitation. She needed more. She needed his weight, his cock, the real, crushing fullness of him.

“Cane,” she whispered, a filthy, broken plea into the lamplight.

Her other hand shoved her sleep shirt up, pinching and pulling at her own nipple, imagining it was his mouth, his teeth. Her hips began to move against her own hand, a frantic, chasing rhythm. The wet, obscene sound of her fingers moving in and out of her own body filled the room. She was lost in it, in the brutal, graphic movie playing behind her eyes: him turning from the window, not with shock, but with a predatory, knowing smile. Him walking toward her, fully erect, thick and heavy and for her. Him bending her over the very couch they’d shared a pizza on just hours before.

“Fuck me,” she gritted out, the words guttural and raw. “God, please, fuck me, Cane. Right there. Just take me.”

Her fingers worked faster, harder, her thumb pressing brutal circles against her clit. The coil in her gut wound tighter, a screaming, white-hot wire of tension. She was covered in a fine sheen of sweat, her curls plastered to her forehead, every muscle in her body drawn taut as a bowstring.

The fantasy crystallized, perfect and devastating. Him gripping her hips, his grunt in her ear, the slap of skin on skin as he drove into her from behind, filling her so completely it bordered on pain. The image was so vivid she could almost feel the burn of the initial stretch, the overwhelming fullness.

It ripped through her with violent, no-holds-barred force. Her back bowed off the bed, a silent scream tearing through her throat. Pleasure, sharp and seismic, obliterated every other thought. It rolled through her in wave after punishing wave, clenching around her own fingers, her hips jerking erratically against her hand until the sensations became too intense, nearly painful. She collapsed, spent, into the soaked sheets, her limbs boneless, her lungs hauling in air.

Reality flooded back in, cold and clinical.

The lamp. The quiet apartment. The sticky evidence on her thigh and her trembling fingers.

A wave of nausea followed the aftershocks. She curled onto her side, pulling her knees to her chest. What the hell was wrong with her? She had just come, harder than she could remember, to the thought of her best friend ruthlessly taking her on his living room floor. She’d chanted his name like a prayer.

The intimacy of their friendship felt contaminated. She could never look at him the same way again, because now she knew exactly how her body reacted to the idea of him. The easy comfort was gone, replaced by this hungry, shameful knowledge.

As if on cue, her phone buzzed on the nightstand.

She flinched. With a trembling arm, she reached for it, wiping her hand on the sheet first.

A text message. From Cane.

The screen’s light was a brutal flare in the dark room.

Hey. Pizza was good but kinda lonely. You ran out of here like your ass was on fire. Everything cool?

Jessica stared at the words. She could smell him on her skin, on her sheets. She could feel the phantom ache between her legs. And he was texting her about pizza, about loneliness, with a casual concern that felt like a physical blow.

She dropped the phone like it was scalding hot. It landed screen-up on the mattress, the message glowing up at her, a simple question she had no idea how to answer.

The silence of the room pressed in, heavy and suffocating. She was alone with the vivid, gut-wrenching echo of her own desire, and the terrifying understanding that nothing between them would ever be simple again.
