Chapter 1: Introduction

The fluorescent lights in Vice Principal Thompson’s office buzzed like a swarm of angry bees, casting a sterile glow over the stacks of manila folders and the framed diplomas on the wall. I slouched in the chair across from her desk, one ankle propped up on my knee, fingers tapping an impatient rhythm against my thigh. My third strike of the week—*third*—and I still had no idea what I’d even done this time. Something about skipping study hall to smoke behind the gym with Jake, but honestly? The rules were more like suggestions when you had my last name.

Thompson didn’t look up from her laptop.

Her fingers hovered over the keyboard, her sharp eyes scanning some report before she finally sighed and leaned back in her chair. The creak of the leather was the only sound in the room for a long moment.

“Shiven,” she said, her voice dry as old coffee, “you’re either the most talented rule-breaker this school has ever seen or the most stubborn.”

I grinned. “Both?”

She didn’t smile back. “Sit up straight.”

I obeyed, but only because I knew she’d notice if I didn’t. The vice principal had a way of making even the most minor infractions feel like a crime against humanity.

But I'd been dealing with her stern looks and lectures since freshman year, and I'd learned that the key to surviving Thompson's office was to keep the mood light. So, I leaned forward, resting my elbows on my knees, and flashed her my most charming smile.

"Come on, Thompson," I said, using the familiarity I knew she secretly appreciated. "You know I'm just trying to make high school a more... interesting place."

She raised an eyebrow. "Interesting for whom, Shiven? You or your fellow students?"

Before I could respond, the door to her office creaked open, and in walked Advika. My heart did a little somersault in my chest as I took her in.

Advika looked like she'd just stepped off the pages of some high-fashion magazine, her long, brown hair cascading over her shoulders in loose waves, her lips a perfect, plump pink. She wore a top that hugged her curves like a second skin, the neckline dipping low enough to make my mouth go dry, and a skirt that was short enough to make me wonder if she'd forgotten to put on pants. She was a walking, talking definition of temptation, and I was already struggling to keep my eyes north of her neck.

"Vice Principal Thompson," she said, her voice a sultry purr that made me think of late nights and slow dances.

"I'm here for my punishment."

I swallowed hard, my eyes locked onto her. Thompson cleared her throat, a small, knowing smile tugging at the corner of her lips.

"Advika," she said, her voice a mix of authority and amusement. "Please, have a seat."

Advika sauntered over to the chair beside mine, her hips swaying slightly with each step. She sat down, her thigh brushing against mine, and I had to fight the urge to lean into her. The scent of her perfume—something floral and intoxicating—filled the air around me.

"Shiven," Thompson said, her voice cutting through the tension. "You're here for skipping study hall.

Same as Shiven," Thompson said, looking between us. Advika shrugged, her eyes twinkling with mischief.

"Guilty as charged," she said, her voice laced with a playful challenge. I couldn't help but grin at her, admiring her nonchalance. Advika was the only person I knew who could make getting in trouble look like a fashion statement.

Thompson sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. "I should have known the two of you would be involved in this together."

I held up my hands in mock surrender. "Hey, I'm just an innocent bystander here. I was minding my own business, and then suddenly, Advika shows up, looking like...

well, like a dream I didn’t even know I had. But no, I can’t take the credit. She’s the one who made the gym doors look like a siren’s call."

Advika smirked, her fingers tracing idle circles on the armrest of her chair. "You’re just jealous because you don’t have my *style*."

I leaned in slightly, my voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "Style? No, no—it’s the *danger* you bring to the room. Like walking into a classroom full of teachers and making them forget their lesson plans entirely."

Thompson’s lips twitched, and for a second, I thought she might actually laugh.

Instead, she cleared her throat and adjusted her glasses, her expression turning back to its usual sternness. "Alright, let’s cut the flirting. Both of you are in trouble."

Advika leaned back in her chair, her legs crossed in a way that made her skirt ride higher up her thighs, and she crossed her arms, her cleavage spilling over the top of her dress. "I don’t think we’re in trouble. I think we’re *underappreciated*."

I couldn’t help but grin at her. "Oh, Advika, you’re a natural at this. You turn detention into a performance art piece."

Thompson sighed, rubbing her temples. "Enough.

Both of you," Thompson said, her voice firm but with a hint of amusement. "You’re both on detention for the next two days, and you’ll be working in the library after school. No excuses."

Advika’s smirk didn’t falter. "Two days? That’s *generous*. I could’ve done with a week."

I chuckled, shaking my head. "See? That’s why she’s trouble."

Thompson’s gaze flickered between us, her eyes narrowing slightly. "And you, Shiven, are on probation for the rest of the semester. One more infraction, and you’ll be seeing the principal."

I turned to advika "advika leave for 10 minutes let me talk to thompson alone please" she nodded and left the office. I turned back to thompson "Thompson, come on, you know I'm not a bad kid. I just have a... unique perspective on rules."

Thompson raised an eyebrow. "Unique? Is that what we're calling it now?"

I leaned back in my chair, my hands clasped behind my head. "Look, I know I bend them sometimes. But I never break them. Not really. And I always make sure no one else gets hurt." "Shiven, you're like a cat with nine lives. But even cats run out eventually."

I grinned.
