Chapter 1: The Proposal: A Bargain in Silk and Shame
The stale coffee smell hit me first. Always did. Like Vishal brewed yesterday’s grounds just to torture us. My palms were slick against the cheap laminate of his desk as I leaned forward, deliberately letting my blouse gape. One button. That’s all it took. His eyes, small and perpetually tired behind thick glasses, flickered down. Gotcha.
"Vishal Sir," I purred, pitching my voice low enough to cut through the computer’s wheezing fan. "About those annual reviews… Divya and I were just discussing how valuable we are to the team." I flashed a smile, all teeth and promise.
Beside me, Sauni shifted. A tiny, nervous rustle. Like a trapped bird. Her knuckles were white where she gripped the doorframe, her gaze fixed somewhere near the motivational poster peeling off the wall. ‘Teamwork Makes the Dream Work’. Yeah, right. The dream tonight involved Vishal’s grubby hands and a pay rise neither of us deserved but desperately needed.
Vishal leaned back in his creaky chair, the fake leather sighing under his weight. He steepled his fingers, trying for managerial gravitas. Failed. He looked like a sweaty toad contemplating a fly. "Divya, Sauni…" His voice was a gravelly rumble. "You know the budget is tighter than ever. Raises… difficult. Very difficult." His eyes lingered on my exposed collarbone. Not difficult for him to look, though.
I pressed my advantage. "Difficult, Sir, but surely not impossible? For the right… incentive?" I let the word hang, thick and suggestive in the cramped, dimly lit cubicle. The flickering fluorescent tube overhead cast harsh shadows, making Sauni look even paler. Her wide shoulders were hunched inward, trying to disappear. Poor thing. She thought her ‘wide backs’ made her unattractive. Didn’t realize desperation could be its own kind of allure.
"Divya," Sauni whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum. "This… are we sure?"
I shot her a look. Shut up and play along. We’d rehearsed this. Sort of. Mostly me talking, her nodding, looking like she was about to vomit. Her fear was palpable, a sour tang mixing with the coffee stench. Virgin nerves. Thirty-eight years old and terrified of a man like Vishal. Pathetic, almost. But useful. Her innocence was part of the package deal. Vishal’s eyes darted between us, a predator scenting vulnerability and opportunity.
"What kind of… incentive?" Vishal asked slowly, leaning forward again. His gaze raked over Sauni now, assessing her trembling form by the door. The cheap polyester of her blouse clung slightly to her skin where sweat had bloomed under her arms. He saw it. I saw him see it. His tongue flicked out, wetting his thin lips.
I leaned closer, invading his stale breath zone. "Something memorable, Sir. Something… exclusive." I gestured subtly towards Sauni. "A joint performance review? Tonight? After hours?" My heart hammered against my ribs, not from nerves, but from the thrill of the game. This was power. Crude, ugly power, but power nonetheless. Better than listening to my useless husband snore on the sofa.
Vishal’s pupils dilated. The computer fan whined louder in the sudden silence. He swallowed, a thick, audible gulp. "Exclusive?" he rasped, his gaze locked on Sauni’s frozen figure. "Both of you?"
Sauni made a tiny, choked sound. Her eyes met mine, wide with panic. Don’t you dare bolt, I willed her silently. Think of the raise. Think of finally being able to breathe.
"Yes, Sir," I confirmed, my voice smooth as silk. "A comprehensive… evaluation. Guaranteed to exceed expectations." I placed a hand lightly on his forearm. His skin felt clammy. "We’d make it worth your while. Very worth it." I let my thumb stroke the cheap fabric of his sleeve. "Think of the recognition. Think of the… compensation."
He stared at my hand on his arm, then back at Sauni, then at my deliberately exposed skin. Greed warred with caution on his face. The caution lost. Badly. A slow, oily smile spread across his features, revealing slightly yellowed teeth. "Recognition… yes. Compensation…" He drew the word out, savoring it. "Perhaps… perhaps an arrangement could be made. For truly exceptional… dedication."
He stood up abruptly, his chair scraping harshly on the thin carpet. He walked past me, towards Sauni still plastered against the doorframe. She flinched as he stopped inches from her. He was taller than her, looming. He reached out, not touching her, but his finger traced a line in the air near her cheek. Sauni stopped breathing.
"Such dedication deserves reward," Vishal murmured, his voice thick. He turned his head, looking back at me over his shoulder. His smile widened, triumphant. Predatory. "After hours. My place. Discretion… paramount." He lingered near Sauni for another agonizing second, inhaling her fear like cheap cologne, before turning fully to face me. "We’ll discuss the specifics of your… compensation package… afterwards. Agreed?"
My own smile felt brittle, but I held it. "Agreed, Sir." The word tasted like ash. Sauni managed a jerky nod, her eyes squeezed shut for a second.
Vishal chuckled, a low, unpleasant sound. He walked back to his desk, his movements suddenly lighter, energized. He picked up a pen, tapping it against the chipped wood. "Excellent. Now, if you’ll excuse me, ladies, I have… preparations to make." He waved a dismissive hand towards the door. "Don’t be late."
We moved like automatons. Sauni practically stumbled out first. I followed, forcing my spine straight. The stale air of the main office felt marginally cleaner than the toxic brew in Vishal’s cubicle. Sauni was already halfway down the aisle towards the ladies' room, hand clamped over her mouth.
I caught up just as she slammed through the door. She lunged for a sink, retching dryly. Nothing came up but terror. She gripped the porcelain edge, her shoulders shaking.
"He… he smelled…" she gasped between ragged breaths. "Like… old meat."
I leaned against the cold tile wall, watching her. The thrill was fading, replaced by a cold, hard knot in my stomach. We’d done it. Hooked him. "He smells like desperation and cheap aftershave," I said flatly. "And power. That’s the smell that matters tonight." I pushed off the wall, turning on the tap for her. "Rinse your mouth. Pull yourself together."
She splashed water on her face, droplets clinging to her lashes like tears. She looked at me in the smudged mirror, her reflection pale and haunted. "Divya… what have we agreed to?"
"What we need," I stated, my voice firm. The coldness was settling in, a necessary armor. "Financial security. Recognition. A way out of… everything else." I thought of my husband’s lazy smirk, the mounting bills, the sheer nothingness of my days. "One night, Sauni. One disgusting night. Then we get paid." I met her eyes in the glass. "Can you do it? Can you trade… that… for the raise?"
She stared at her reflection, at her own wide, frightened eyes. Her hand drifted down, touching her stomach, then her hip, tracing the lines she hated. The virgin. The unwanted. The overlooked. A spark ignited in her eyes, fragile but fierce. Not courage, exactly. Desperation honed into a weapon. She swallowed hard, the sound loud in the tiled room.
"For the raise?" Her voice was a raw whisper. "For… for not being invisible anymore?" She straightened up, wiping her face with a rough paper towel. The tremor in her hands was still there, but her chin lifted a fraction. "Yes." The word was small, but absolute. "I can do it."
I nodded, a grim satisfaction replacing the cold knot. "Good. Then let’s go get ready." I pushed open the bathroom door. "We have an appointment with ambition." The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead as we walked back into the office, the air thick with the scent of photocopier toner and impending compromise. The clock on the wall ticked loudly towards the end of innocence.
The ticking clock followed us out of the office, each second echoing in my hollow chest as we walked to Vishal’s apartment building. His place smelled like stale cigarettes and cheap takeout, the cramped living room dominated by a sagging brown couch that groaned under Vishal’s weight as he sprawled there, a cheap bottle of whiskey already half-empty on the coffee table. He wore a stained undershirt now, his managerial mask discarded. His eyes, predatory and assessing, tracked us as we hovered near the door.
"Make yourselves comfortable," he rasped, gesturing expansively with his glass. Amber liquid sloshed precariously close to the rim. "Drink?"
Divya moved first, fluid and deliberate. She snatched the bottle, poured a generous slug into a dusty tumbler, and knocked it back without flinching. Her eyes stayed locked on Vishal. "Let’s skip the pleasantries, Sir. We’re here. You’re here. Let’s talk about that raise." Her voice was steady, but I saw the tightness in her jaw.
Vishal chuckled, a low, wet sound. "All business, Divya? I thought we agreed on a more… comprehensive evaluation." His gaze slid to me, lingering on my trembling hands. "Sauni looks nervous. Shy. I like that." He patted the stained cushion beside him. "Come. Sit."
My feet felt bolted to the grimy carpet. Every instinct screamed run. Divya’s sharp elbow dug into my ribs. "Sit," she hissed under her breath. I stumbled forward, perching on the very edge of the couch, as far from Vishal as possible. The vinyl felt sticky against my thighs.
Vishal shifted, leaning closer. His breath, sour with whiskey and onions, washed over me. "Better." His hand landed heavily on my knee. I flinched violently. "Still jumpy. We’ll fix that." He looked past me to Divya. "You seem… prepared. Show me."
Divya didn’t hesitate. She stepped in front of him, blocking his view of me. "What do you want to see, Sir?" Her voice dropped, a low purr laced with an edge I couldn’t decipher. She unbuttoned another button on her blouse.
Vishal’s eyes gleamed. "Initiative. Enthusiasm." He licked his lips. "Get rid of that blouse."
Divya’s fingers moved deftly. The blouse pooled at her feet. She stood before him in just her skirt and bra, the dim light catching the smooth planes of her shoulders, the defiant tilt of her chin. Vishal’s hand tightened painfully on my knee. He was breathing harder now, a rasping sound."Good. Very good." He pointed a thick finger at me. "Your turn, Sauni."
Panic seized my throat. I couldn’t move. Couldn’t breathe. The room blurred.
"Sauni needs a moment," Divya interjected smoothly, her voice cutting through my paralysis. She placed a hand on Vishal’s shoulder, leaning down until her face was inches from his. "Let me warm things up for her, Sir." Her gaze held his, unwavering. "Show her how it’s done." Her other hand trailed down his chest, stopping at the waistband of his trousers.
Vishal’s attention snapped fully to Divya, a greedy hunger replacing the impatience. "Yeah?" he grunted, his hand finally sliding off my knee to grip Divya’s hip. "Show me initiative, Divya. Show me… dedication."
Divya’s smile was sharp, dangerous. "Gladly." She shifted her weight.
DIVYA STRADDLES HIM.
She lowered herself onto his lap, her knees sinking into the worn cushions on either side of his thighs. Vishal groaned, a raw, animal sound, his hands immediately grabbing her waist, pulling her flush against him. His head fell back against the couch, eyes wide and fixed on her face, then roaming greedily down her body. Divya moved with deliberate, grinding slowness, the friction of her skirt against his trousers loud in the sudden silence. She braced her hands on the back of the couch behind his head, trapping him, controlling the angle. Her expression was a mask of cool concentration, utterly detached from the lewd motion of her hips.
"See, Sauni?" Divya’s voice was breathy but utterly controlled, her eyes flicking to mine for a split second. Cold. Calculating. "Just like that. Dedication." She looked back down at Vishal, whose mouth hung slack, his hands pawing clumsily at her back. "Is this exceeding expectations, Sir?"
Vishal could only manage a choked gasp, his hips bucking upwards instinctively, seeking more friction. His glasses slid down his sweaty nose. "Fuck… yes… Divya…"
I watched, frozen, horror warring with a sickening fascination. Divya moved like she’d done this a thousand times, an efficient, transactional rhythm. Her body was a weapon, wielded with precision. She leaned down, her lips brushing his ear. "What about Sauni’s raise, Vishal? Mine? Double digits? Retroactive?"
Vishal’s eyes squeezed shut, lost in sensation. "Anything… god… anything…"
Divya’s hips rolled again, harder. "Say it," she commanded, her voice low and hard. "Say the number."
"Fifteen percent!" he blurted out, his voice cracking. "Each! Backdated!"
Divya didn’t stop moving. "And the promotion? The one you promised Kumar?"
"Yes! Your… fucking… promotion!" Vishal groaned, his hands scrabbling at her hips. "Just… keep…"
Divya’s eyes met mine again over Vishal’s heaving shoulder. There was no triumph there. Only a grim acknowledgment of the vile currency we were trading in. She nodded infinitesimally towards Vishal’s straining body beneath her. Your turn, the nod said. Pay your share.
Vishal’s glazed eyes suddenly snapped open. He wrestled his focus from Divya’s relentless motion, his gaze, hot and demanding, locking onto me. His hand reached out, trembling, pointing at the space beside Divya on the couch. "Now… Sauni," he panted, spit flecking his lips. "Come… here. Show me… how dedicated… you really are."
Vishal’s command hung in the air, thick as the cigarette smoke clinging to the wallpaper. Sauni felt the vinyl couch grip her thighs like quicksand. His hand on her knee earlier had left a phantom heat, a brand. Divya’s relentless rhythm on his lap hadn’t stopped, a rhythmic squeak of cheap upholstery under her deliberate movements. Her eyes, over Vishal’s flushed, sweaty shoulder, locked onto Sauni’s. Not sympathetic. Not encouraging. Required.
"Come on, Sauni," Divya urged, her breath catching only slightly with the effort of her performance. "Show Sir… your commitment. Like we discussed." Her gaze was a steel trap. This is the price. Pay it.
Vishal groaned, his head lolling back. His free hand pawed blindly towards Sauni’s leg again. His breath was rancid. "Don’t… keep me waiting. Dedication… needs proof."
Sauni’s mind screamed static. Thirty-eight years of carefully constructed walls – walls built on spreadsheets, on early mornings, on quiet evenings alone with books – crumbled into dust around this grimy couch. The raise shimmered promise: bills paid, respect earned, maybe even… perspective. Something beyond the label ‘unmarried’, ‘plain’. Beyond the terrifying unknown of her untouched body. She saw her reflection sometimes – the ‘wide backs’ her aunt always clucked about, the jawline that felt too strong, not delicate. Who would ever want that? Vishal did. Right now. He wanted it enough to pay.
Her hand, trembling violently, lifted. Fingers brushed the top button of her polyester blouse. The cheap fabric felt suffocating. She fumbled. The button resisted, slick under her sweating fingertips.
"Faster," Vishal grunted, bucking his hips harder beneath Divya. His impatience was a physical force, pressing in on Sauni. "Stop fucking… stalling."
Divya increased her pace, a sharp, mechanical rocking. "Do it, Sauni," she hissed, a flicker of irritation beneath the breathy facade. "Or this whole fucking thing was for nothing."
The second button gave way. A sliver of her plain beige bra strap appeared. Sauni’s skin prickled with cold sweat despite the stifling room air. Vishal’s eyes, glazed yet predatory, tracked the movement. A low, satisfied rumble escaped him. "That’s it… good… good girl." His hand landed heavily on her thigh, higher this time, fingers digging into the soft flesh above her knee. His thumb stroked the inside of her leg. It wasn’t a caress. It was a claim.
Sauni gasped. A small, wounded sound. The touch was alien, invasive. Not curiosity, but conquest. Her stomach lurched. The scent of old whiskey, stale sweat, and Vishal’s cheap aftershave coalesced into a nauseating fog. Her body betrayed her, locking rigid under his grip. Tears, hot and humiliating, welled, blurring the peeling floral wallpaper behind Vishal’s head.
"Stop crying," Vishal snapped, his voice losing its groggy lust, turning sharp. His thumb pressed harder, bruising. "You wanted this. You came here. Now earn it." He shoved her leg roughly outward, forcing her posture wider, more exposed. "Unbutton the rest. Now."
Divya stopped moving like a switch had been flipped. She stared down at Vishal, her expression unreadable, then flicked a glance at Sauni’s tear-streaked face. "Sauni," she said, her voice flat, stripped of its earlier purr. "Just do it. It’s almost done."
Sauni looked at Divya. Saw the calculation, the impatience. Saw the cool professionalism even in this squalor. Then she looked at Vishal – the sweat beading on his upper lip, the triumph in his eyes as he controlled her fear, the sheer ugliness of his demand. This wasn’t escape. This wasn’t power. This was just… degradation. Purchased with her virginity and Divya’s detached efficiency. The shimmering promise of the raise suddenly looked like fool’s gold, tarnished and worthless.
A sob tore from her throat, raw and ragged. "I… I can’t." The words were barely audible, choked.
Vishal’s face contorted. "You fucking bitch!" he roared, shoving Divya off him with surprising force. She stumbled back, catching herself against a bookshelf covered in dusty management manuals. "You tease me? Get me hard and then play fucking shy?"
He lunged sideways, grabbing Sauni’s arm, his fingers like steel bands. Pain shot up to her shoulder. He hauled her towards him on the couch, his other hand grabbing for the front of her blouse. "You will show me!"
The vinyl squealed under me as Vishal yanked me sideways. His fingers dug into my arm like meat hooks, hot and crushing. "You fucking bitch!" Spittle hit my cheek. "You tease me? Get me hard and then play fucking shy?" His other hand clawed at the front of my blouse, grabbing a fistful of cheap polyester. The fabric ripped. A button pinged off the coffee table.
Panic seized my throat, pure animal terror. I shoved against his chest, my hands slipping on the sweat-damp undershirt. "No! Stop!" The words were a choked rasp, useless against the sheer weight of him. He smelled like stale beer, onions, and something rancid underneath.
He laughed, a harsh, grating sound. "Stop? You wanted this, Sauni. You came begging." His knee jammed between my thighs, forcing them apart against the protesting couch. The rough denim scraped my skin. One hand pinned my wrist to the sticky vinyl above my head. The other tore at my bra strap. The clasp snapped. Cold air hit my skin, followed instantly by the clammy press of his palm grabbing my breast. Hard. Possessive. Not desire. Ownership.
I bucked, twisted, tried to knee him, but he was heavy, solid, pinning me down. Tears blurred the peeling ceiling. The motivational poster – ‘Reach Your Goals!’ – swam mockingly in my vision. This wasn’t a goal. This was annihilation. My body, the one I hated, the one no one wanted, was being claimed in the filthiest way possible. Shame burned hotter than the pain in my arm.
"Vishal." Divya’s voice cut through my gasping sobs. Calm. Cool. Like she was discussing a spreadsheet. She stood beside the couch, looking down at us. Her blouse was still off, her skirt askew, but her posture was utterly composed. No fear. Just calculation. "You’re scaring her."
Vishal paused, panting, his grip still bruising. He glared up at Divya. "She’s playing games!"
"She’s inexperienced," Divya corrected smoothly, her gaze flicking to mine for a fraction of a second. Cold. Assessing. "Shy. Remember? That’s part of the appeal, isn’t it? The… innocence?" She placed a hand lightly on Vishal’s heaving shoulder. Not pushing him off. Guiding. "She doesn’t know how to ask for what she wants. She likes it… rougher. But she needs you to take charge. Show her."
Her words landed like ice water. She likes it rougher. The lie coiled around my panic, strangling it into numb horror. Divya wasn’t saving me. She was directing him. Making it efficient. Making sure he got what he paid for so we got paid.
Vishal’s furious glare softened into something uglier. Understanding. Greed. He looked back down at me, pinned beneath him, exposed, trembling. A slow, cruel smile spread across his face. "Innocent," he breathed, the word thick with perversion. "Needs showing." His hand tightened on my breast, making me whimper. "Yeah. Okay." He shifted his weight, his free hand fumbling with his belt buckle. The metallic clink was obscenely loud.
"No," I whispered again, the sound lost under his grunt and the rasp of his zipper. I squeezed my eyes shut. The world narrowed to the pressure on my wrist, the sour stench of his breath, the terrifying scrape of fabric against my thighs as he shoved my skirt up. Divya’s presence was a cold shadow beside us. Silent now. Watching. Ensuring the transaction proceeded.
His fingers pushed, insistent, invasive. Dry. Painful. I cried out, a sharp, involuntary sound. My body locked rigid, every muscle screaming rejection.
"Relax," Vishal growled, frustration edging his voice again. He shoved harder. "Fucking relax!"
"Guide her, Vishal," Divya murmured, her voice low, hypnotic. "She doesn’t know how to yield. Make her." A pause. "Use her. She’s yours now."
Yours. The word echoed in the hollow space where my thoughts used to be. This was the price. The raise shimmered like a mirage – fifteen percent, backdated, the promotion – but it felt impossibly distant, meaningless against the immediate violation. My body wasn’t mine anymore. It was a commodity Divya had packaged and sold, and Vishal was collecting.
He thrust. A tearing, burning intrusion. White-hot pain exploded, stealing my breath. I gasped, a soundless scream tearing through my chest. My eyes flew open, meeting Vishal’s triumphant, sweaty face inches from mine. Behind him, Divya watched, her expression unreadable, arms crossed loosely over her bare chest. A silent auditor.
He moved. Rough, rhythmic, grunting with effort. Each thrust was a fresh agony, a violation that scraped me raw inside. The pain was a physical anchor, the only thing tethering me to the moment. Without it, I might have floated away entirely. I stared past Vishal’s shoulder at the water stain on the ceiling, shaped vaguely like a screaming face. The motivational poster’s corner fluttered in a draft from the rattling window. Reach Your Goals. The absurdity of it choked me. This was the summit. This grimy couch, this sweating man, this detached observer. This was ambition’s reward.
I dissociated. The pain receded, replaced by a chilling numbness. Sounds became muffled – Vishal’s harsh breaths, the rhythmic squeak of the couch springs, the distant hum of traffic outside. My body felt detached, a thing being used, observed from a great distance. Divya shifted her weight slightly. I saw her foot tap impatiently on the grimy carpet. Hurry up. Get it over with. Get paid.
Vishal’s rhythm grew frantic, jerky. His grip on my pinned wrist tightened until the bones ground together. A guttural groan ripped from his throat, hot and wet against my ear. He shuddered violently, collapsing his full weight onto me, crushing the air from my lungs. He lay there, panting, a dead weight soaked in sweat and the sour smell of spent lust.
Silence descended, thick and suffocating. The only sound was his ragged breathing and the frantic hammering of my own heart against my ribs. He didn’t move. His body pressed mine into the sticky vinyl, his face buried in the crook of my neck. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t move. I stared straight up at the screaming water stain.
Slowly, Vishal pushed himself up onto his elbows. He looked down at me, his eyes glazed, satisfied. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. "See?" he rasped, a smug leer twisting his features. "Not so hard once you get started." He patted my hip, a grotesque parody of affection. "You did good."
He rolled off me, the sudden absence of his weight leaving me cold and exposed. He fumbled with his trousers, tucking himself away with clumsy movements. The ripped fabric of my blouse gaped open. My skirt was bunched around my waist. I didn’t move to cover myself. The numbness was absolute.
Vishal stood, swaying slightly, and reached for the whiskey bottle on the coffee table. He took a long, direct swig, wiping his lips again. He glanced at Divya, then back at me, sprawled on the couch. "Promotion’s yours, Divya. Fifteen percent each. Backdated. Paperwork Monday." His voice was rough but businesslike now. The transaction complete. "Discretion. Remember?"
Divya nodded once, sharp and final. "Discretion." She picked up her blouse from the floor, shaking it out with brisk efficiency. She didn’t look at me. "Get dressed, Sauni." Her tone was flat, devoid of anything resembling sympathy. An order. A dismissal. "We’re done here."
Vishal grunted, taking another swig, already turning away, his interest extinguished. I pushed myself up slowly, every movement sending fresh waves of dull ache radiating from my core. My legs trembled as I stood. The room tilted. I fumbled with the torn edges of my blouse, my fingers clumsy and cold. The cheap fabric wouldn’t close. I held it together with one shaking hand. My skirt fell back into place, but it felt alien, like borrowed skin. The taste of bile coated my tongue. The smell of him, of the room, of what had just happened, clung to me, thick and nauseating.
Divya was already buttoning her blouse, her movements precise, economical. Finished. She glanced at me, her eyes scanning my disheveled state, my tear-streaked face, the way I clutched my ruined blouse. There was no warmth. No shared horror. Just a faint impatience. "Come on," she said, turning towards the door. "Let’s go."
