Chapter 1: Chapter 1
The torchlight swam behind her half-lidded eyes, a smear of amber and shadow that made the stone walls of the conquered fortress breathe. Lady Death lay spread across the iron bed frame, wrists and ankles locked in cuffs that bit with a cold, familiar weight. The iron hummed against her skin, a dull thrum that kept her magic leashed somewhere deep in her marrow. She could feel it straining, like a wolf at the end of a chain, but she made no real effort to call it forth.
She tested the irons once. Not to escape. Just to feel them hold her.
The leather of her halter creaked as she shifted, the fitted black material cutting high on her hips, leaving the pale planes of her stomach bare. The cuffs clinked, a music she was beginning to know. Her legs were spread wide enough that she could writhe, could twist her hips and buck against the mattress, but she could not close her thighs. The air moved cool across her bared skin, raising gooseflesh along her arms, her ribs, the sensitive inner curve of her knees.
Black silk pressed against her mouth, tied snug at the back of her skull. She could taste the weave, faintly bitter, the fibers rough against her tongue where she pressed it forward. A whimper escaped her, thin and reedy, swallowed by the gag before it could become a word.
She should be furious. She was a queen, the last of a line that had painted battlefields red. She had burned cities and taken crowns. Men had knelt to her and called her Lady Death and meant it as a prayer and a curse. And now she lay here, in the bedchamber of her conqueror, bound and gagged and dressed in scraps of leather that her own war-garb had become.
But the fury would not come. It flickered somewhere distant, a dying ember she could not be bothered to stoke.
Her body felt heavy, drugged with something sweeter than poison. The iron suppressed her power, yes, but it was not the iron that made her limbs feel boneless, that made her hips shift restlessly against the sheets as if searching for something. It was memory. It was anticipation. It was the knowledge of what was coming, and the terrible, shameful truth that she wanted it.
She had spent centuries craving this, though she would have died before admitting it. Claimed. Mastered. Bred. The thought of it made her breath catch, made her thighs press together uselessly against the spread of the irons. She had dreamed of a power greater than her own, of hands that would not yield to her command, of a will that would bend her to its pleasure until she forgot she had ever been a queen at all.
And now it was coming. She could feel him in the corridor before she heard him, a presence like the weight of a coming storm. The shadow in the corners of the room grew darker, deeper, pooling like ink in water.
The door opened without sound.
He stepped through, and the torchlight seemed to dim in deference. He was tall, impossibly so, his silhouette carved from darkness that moved like silk around a frame of lean, hard muscle. His face was all sharp planes and shadowed hollows, handsome in a way that made her chest ache. His eyes were black, depthless, ancient, and they found her immediately.
Lady Death felt her breath stop. Then start again, faster, shallower.
She should snarl at him. She should test the irons again, should rattle them and bare her teeth and remind him that she had made kings weep. But her body betrayed her before her mind could catch up. She arched, just slightly, her hips lifting off the mattress. The movement was involuntary, a confession her flesh made without her permission.
The silk muffled her whine, but she heard it anyway.
He crossed the room with a prowler's grace, his bare feet soundless on the cold stone. He wore little, just loose dark trousers that hung low on his hips, leaving the plane of his chest bare. His skin was pale, marbled with shadows that seemed to move beneath the surface, patterns like smoke trapped in glass. The torchlight caught the lean ridges of his abdomen, the cut of muscle along his shoulders.
He stopped at the foot of the bed, his gaze traveling over her. Slow. Deliberate. A survey of territory that already belonged to him.
"Look at you," he murmured, and his voice was warm, low, a velvet rasp that slid down her spine and pooled somewhere low in her belly. "The witch-queen of the Ironteeth. Slayer of kings. Lady Death herself."
She made a sound behind the silk, something that might have been a snarl if her traitorous body weren't already pressing up toward him.
A smile curved his mouth. Not cruel. Amused, and something else. Something hungry.
He stepped closer, rounding the bed until he stood beside her. His shadow fell over her, cooling the torch-heat on her skin, and she shivered. Her eyes fluttered half-closed, watching him through her lashes.
He reached down and touched her jaw.
Her body reacted before her mind could. She stilled, then shivered again. Her head tilted toward his palm, her cheek pressing into the warmth of his hand like a cat seeking affection. Her lips parted against the silk, and a small, pleading sound escaped her, muffled and desperate.
"Already so eager," he observed, his thumb stroking along the line of her jaw. "The conqueror of nations, melting at a single touch. What would your enemies say if they could see you now?"
She whined. It was pathetic, that sound, and she knew it. But she could not help it. His hand was warm, his skin roughened with callouses that scraped pleasantly against her flesh, and she wanted more.
"Please," she tried to say, but the silk turned it to a shapeless moan. "Phhlease."
He tilted her head back, exposing the column of her throat. His gaze traced down, over the line of her neck, the hollow at its base, the rise of her breasts beneath the leather halter. His thumb pressed lightly at the corner of her mouth, tracing the edge of the gag.
"The voice of a queen, reduced to begging." His tone was musing, impossibly fond. "And so beautifully, shamelessly willing to do so."
She moaned against the silk, her hips shifting. The leather of her pants was growing damp, the fabric clinging to her thighs as she moved. She could feel the heat building between her legs, a slow, molten ache that made her head swim.
He released her jaw and stepped back. She made a sound of protest, high and needy, her body arching after him.
He ignored her, moving to the side of the bed. His fingers found the buckle of her halter.
"A queen dressed for war," he murmured, working the clasp loose, "reduced to her last defenses. These straps. This leather." He drew the halter down, peeling it away from her breasts. "So much pride bound into so little cloth."
The cool air hit her nipples, and they tightened into aching peaks. She gasped behind the silk, her back arching, offering herself up to him without thought.
He let the halter fall, discarded, to the stone floor. His hands came up, palms rough and warm, and cupped her breasts. She cried out, a muffled, shattered sound, her whole body bowing up toward his touch.
His thumbs found her nipples, stroking in slow, deliberate circles. "Your skin remembers," he whispered, bending low. His breath ghosted across her breast, making her shudder. "It remembers being touched like this. It remembers what it was made for."
"No," she tried to say, but it came out as a broken whimper. "Yesss, please, yesss."
"Hmm?" He looked at her, his dark eyes gleaming. "What was that? A denial? Or a plea?"
She shook her head, helpless, her hair spreading across the pillow. She pressed her breasts harder into his palms, wordlessly begging for more.
His laugh was quiet, warm. "I thought so."
He released her, and she groaned in disappointment. But his hands went lower, to the waistband of her leather pants. He hooked his fingers beneath the material and drew them down, slow, inch by torturous inch.
"You wore these into battle," he said, tugging the leather over the flare of her hips. "You wore them when you took that castle on the ridge. When you cut the general down in his own hall." The pants slid lower, exposing the pale skin of her thighs. "Did you think of this then? Did you think of being here? Like this?"
She shook her head, a jerky, desperate motion.
"Liar," he murmured, not unkindly. The pants were past her knees now, pooling around the cuffs at her ankles. "Your body tells me differently. The way it opens for me. The way it weeps."
She was bare beneath. The leather had been all she wore, and now it was gone, leaving her naked and spread across his bed, bound and gagged and utterly at his mercy.
He stood back, looking at her. His gaze was a physical thing, hot and slow and covetous. He looked at the pale curve of her belly, the dip of her waist, the generous swell of her hips. He looked at the dark thatch of hair between her thighs, already glistening with her wetness. He looked at her breasts, rising and falling with her rapid breath.
"Beautiful," he said, and the word was a benediction. "You are beautiful, my queen. Even like this. Perhaps especially like this."
She moaned, arching her hips. She wanted his hands on her. She wanted his mouth. She wanted him inside her, filling her, claiming her so thoroughly that she would forget her own name.
"Phlease," she begged against the silk. "Phlease, phlease, phlease."
"Patience." He smiled, warm and wicked. He moved to the side of the bed, crouching down to press a kiss to the inside of her knee. She shuddered. His lips traveled up her thigh, slow and teasing, while his hand came up to rest on the opposite thigh, fingers digging into the soft flesh. "We have all night. And I intend to savor every inch of you."
His lips reached the juncture of her thigh, and he pressed an open-mouthed kiss to the sensitive skin there. She keened behind the silk, a desperate, muffled cry, her hips jerking toward his mouth.
He pulled back, chuckling. "So eager. But I'm not ready for that yet."
She whined, plaintive and broken, pressing her hips into the air. The need was a living thing inside her now, coiled tight and burning low in her belly. She would beg, she realized. She would beg and plead and do anything he asked, if only he would touch her where she needed it most.
He moved again, stepping out of view. She followed him with frantic eyes, twisting her head against the pillow. She heard the rustle of fabric, the whisper of his trousers falling away. When he returned to her line of sight, he was naked, his body all lean muscle and pale skin, and his cock rose thick and hard from the dark hair at his groin.
She moaned, a sound of pure, desperate want.
"Do you want this?" he asked, stroking himself idly. His gaze was heavy on her face, reading the truth in her half-lidded eyes. "Do you want me to take you, my queen? To fill you until you can think of nothing else?"
She nodded frantically, the best she could manage bound as she was. The silk grew damp with her desperate, muffled pleas.
"Say it," he murmured, moving toward the foot of the bed. His hand closed around her ankle, above the iron cuff, and he pushed her leg up, spreading her wider. "Tell me what you want."
"Yesss," she got out, the word smearing against the silk. "Phlease, yesss, I wan' it, I wan' you—"
"Louder," he teased, even as he positioned himself between her spread thighs. The heat of him was a brand against her skin, the head of his cock pressing against her slick, aching entrance. "Let every spirit in this fortress hear how the great Lady Death begs for her master's cock."
She cried out as he pushed inside her, a thick, slow invasion that stretched her around him. Her back bowed, her head thrown back against the pillow, the silk tearing with the force of her scream. Her cunt clenched around him, gripping him tight, drawing him deeper.
"Ah," he breathed, his hands sliding up her thighs, over the curve of her hips. "There she is. The queen. Yielding at last."
He withdrew and thrust again, slow and grinding, seating himself to the hilt. She felt impossibly full, impossibly stretched. The iron cuffs bit into her wrists as she pulled against them, not to escape but to anchor herself, to have something to cling to as the waves of pleasure began to build.
"Look at you," he murmured, setting a rhythm. Slow. Deep. Unhurried. Each thrust pressed against a spot inside her that made her vision blur, made her gone with pleasure. "Perfect. Made for this. Made for me."
Her protests, whatever feeble denials her pride had once tried to muster, drowned in the flood of sensation. She was nothing but sensation now, sensation and sound, her muffled moans filling the chamber.
"Phlease," she managed, "phlease, more, I need—"
He obliged, picking up his pace, the slap of his hips against hers ringing wetly through the room. He pressed her thighs wider, driving deeper, and she writhed beneath him, her ass grinding into the mattress with each forceful thrust.
"So tight," he groaned. "So wet. You were born for this, werent you, my queen? Born to be filled. Born to be bred."
"Yes," she sobbed against the silk. "Yesss, phlease, I wan' it, I wan' your seed, phlease—"
He laughed, low and dark, and pulled back until only the head of his cock remained inside her. She whimpered at the loss, pressing her hips toward him, seeking more.
"Beg," he said softly. "Beg me properly."
She shook her head, the last tattered shred of her pride making a desperate, doomed stand. But her body betrayed her, her hips circling in the empty air, her cunt clenching around nothing.
"Phlease," she whined, drawing the word out. "Phlease, mas'er, I need you, I need your cock, don' stop, phlease—"
"Mas'er," he repeated, savoring the word. "I like that. Even if you cannot say it clearly, I hear it. And I feel it." He slammed back into her, and she screamed, a muffled, shattered cry. "I feel how much you want this. How you clench around me. How your body greedily claims me."
He set a relentless rhythm, hard and fast, driving them both toward the peak. She was lost, drowning in pleasure, her head lolling to the side as he pounded into her. Her eyes were closed, her lips parted against the gag, and the sounds she made were those of a woman undone.
"That's it," he praised. "Let go. Let me feel you come apart. Let me feel you come."
She was close. So close. The pressure built, coiling in her belly, demanding release. She arched, her hips meeting his thrusts, her body moving in perfect rhythm with his.
"Phlease," she whimpered. "I'm—I'm gonna—"
"Then come," he growled. "Come for me, my queen. Come on my cock."
The coil snapped. She shattered, a silent scream tearing at her throat as waves of pleasure crashed over her. Her body convulsed around him, her inner walls rippling and clenching, milking him. Dimly, she felt him drive deep, felt him shudder, felt the hot pulse of his seed spilling inside her.
A warmth spread from her core, magical and possessive. She felt it seep into her flesh, into her bones, branding her from the inside. Her body clung to it, a deep, satisfied pulse that echoed each throb of his cock.
She lay still, trembling, her breath coming in soft pants against the silk. The heaviness was gone, replaced by a floating, dreamy contentment. She had never felt so full. So claimed.
He eased out of her, slow and gentle, and she whimpered at the loss. He moved up her body, gathering her in his arms, pressing a kiss to her forehead. With one hand, he untied the silk, pulling it free from her mouth.
She gasped at the sudden coolness of the air on her lips, tongue, the taste of the fabric lingering. She licked her lips, tasting salt and want. Her lids were heavy, her limbs boneless, the weight of him a warm shield against her side.
"You did well," he murmured against her hair. "My queen."
She blinked slowly, registering his face above her. The shadowy hollows of his eyes were warm, satisfied. His hand stroked the curve of her hip, soothing and possessive.
Her voice was ruined, rough and raw from screaming through the cloth. It came out a hushed, blurry thing, slurred and absent of fight.
"Your queen," she whispered, the words tasting strange and true, and the smile she offered him was a confession. "Yes. Your queen."
The chamber was quiet, torchlight guttering against the walls, her body still trembling with aftershocks. She was his now, and she knew it. She let herself sink, slowly, into the circle of his arms, and the last flicker of the iron burned away to dust.
