Chapter 1: Introduction
The grand, ivy-covered Thorne Mansion loomed before him, its once-pristine facade now weathered and worn by time. The Victorian estate stood tall and proud, a testament to its past glory, even as the ivy clung to its walls like creeping fingers of decay. Alan swallowed hard, his heart pounding in his chest as he pushed open the heavy iron gate and stepped onto the worn cobblestone path that led to the front door.
He was new to this world, to the role he was about to play. The tiny ad in the newspaper had seemed so innocuous, so ordinary: "Domestic Help Wanted at Thorne Mansion." But as he stood before the imposing house, Alan couldn't help but feel a shiver of unease. He was a young man, barely in his early twenties, and he had never considered domestic work as a career path. Oh well, the bills had to get paid somehow.
Alan tightened the knot of his tie and knocked on the heavy oak door. It creaked open slowly, revealing a dim, long hallway lined with antique furniture and heavy velvet drapes. The air was thick with the scent of old books and dust.
"You must be the new help," a voice echoed from the end of the hall. Alan looked up to see a tall, broad-shouldered man leaning against the doorframe, his arms crossed over his chest. His eyes were a piercing blue, and his hair was as black as a raven's wing. Gabriel Blackwood, reclusive owner of the Thorne Mansion, was both intimidating and striking.
