Chapter 1: Rooftop Ambush Gone Wrong
The rooftop of Jujutsu High was bathed in molten gold, the sun a slick, oily smear behind the jagged skyline. Long shadows stretched from half-finished restraint mechanisms—twisted iron bars and leather straps stained with the residual static of curse energy. The air hummed, thick with the scent of ozone and the distinct, salty tang of sweat.
Yorozu stood in the center of it all, her grin a crack in a porcelain mask. "Perfect," she breathed, her voice a melody of pure madness. "The golden hour. It suits your end, Maki Zenin. Very… aesthetic."
Maki, leaning against a vent with her arms crossed, didn't look up from her phone. Her thumb scrolled. A workout playlist was queued. "You done? I’ve got a date at seven."
"Done?" Yorozu cackled, the sound like shattering glass. "I’m just beginning!"
Her hands moved in a blur. From the shadows, a complex web of cursed energy solidified into bands of shimmering, impossible metal. They shot across the rooftop, whipping towards Maki with a sound like screaming violins.
Maki glanced up. She didn't drop her phone. As the restraints snapped to where she’d been standing, she simply pushed off the vent with one foot, executing a lazy, backward flip that cleared the entire snare. She landed in a silent crouch, one hand still typing out a text. Running late. Yorozu again. Send.
Yorozu’s smile flickered. "How—"
Before the second syllable left her lips, a different kind of pressure slammed down from above. Invisible, crushing, it pinned her to the sun-warmed concrete with a definitive thud. The air left her lungs in a pained grunt.
Yuta Okkotsu stepped from behind a water tower, his expression calm as a deep lake. "You were distracting her," he said, his voice cool. "She told me not to interfere unless you became a nuisance. That counted."
Maki finally pocketed her phone. She walked over, her boots making soft scuffs on the gravel. She looked down at Yorozu, who was splayed out, held fast by Yuta’s binding technique. Her feet, encased in sleek boots, kicked futilely a few inches off the ground.
"Persistent," Maki observed, her tone flat.
"Your energy… your magnificent, cursed-energy-less physique… it must be mine to study! To contain!" Yorozu wheezed against the force pinning her chest.
"Yeah, not happening." Maki bent down, not to Yorozu’s face, but to her own feet. She untied the thick laces of her left boot, then her right. A subtle, potent aroma immediately bloomed into the evening air—musky, salty, deeply human. It cut through the ozone.
Yorozu’s nostrils flared. Her eyes widened. "What is that… that foulness?"
"My socks," Maki said matter-of-factly. She hooked her fingers into the damp, gray fabric of the first one and peeled it off. The second followed with a soft, wet sound. She held them both, crumpled in her fist, between her and the setting sun. They steamed slightly in the cool air.
Yuta’s composed demeanor shifted. A spark lit in his dark eyes. He moved to kneel near Yorozu’s trapped feet. "You know," he said conversationally, "for someone who builds things, you have remarkably flimsy defenses."
"Don't you touch me!" Yorozu shrieked, struggling harder. Her boots dissolved into shimmering dust, a last-ditch effort to retract her Construction technique and deny them access. It left her feet bare, pale and vulnerable, toes curling in the evening air.
Maki dangled the socks directly over Yorozu’s nose. The smell was immediate and overwhelming, a concentrated cloud of hard training and sheer physicality. Yorozu gagged, twisting her head away, but the binding held her fast.
"Smell that?" Maki asked, her voice still devoid of malice. Just stating a fact. "That's what you've been chasing all afternoon. Kinda ironic."
Yuta, without another word, reached out. He didn't grab roughly. His touch was almost clinical at first, his slender fingers wrapping around Yorozu’s left ankle to still its frantic jerking. Then he looked at the sole of her foot, clean and untouched, and his expression softened into something genuinely affectionate.
He leaned down and pressed his lips to the arch.
Yorozu stiffened. A confused, horrified noise escaped her. "W-what are you—"
He didn't answer. He dragged the tip of his tongue in a slow, deliberate circle right over the most sensitive part of her sole.
Yorozu jerked as if electrocuted. A stifled, wet sound burst from her—part gasp, part disbelieving laugh. "S-stop that! That's—ah!" Her sentence dissolved into a sharp inhale as he did it again, this time adding a soft kiss to the ball of her foot.
"This is disrespectful! A violation!" she screeched, but the conviction was crumbling, fracturing under the bizarre, unwelcome sensation.
Maki watched, her head tilted. "Huh." She moved the socks closer, ensuring the aroma was inescapable. Yorozu convulsed, caught between the desperate need to recoil from the smell and the involuntary, traitorous jolts of sensation from her feet.
Yuta was methodical. He explored every inch, from the heel to the bases of her toes, his touch alternating between the flat of his tongue and the gentle scrape of his teeth. He’d pause sometimes, just breathing against her skin, feeling the tiny muscles twitch in response. A faint, fond smile played on his lips.
"Okay, weird," Maki said, but there was no judgment in it. She shifted her weight. "Is she crying?"
Yorozu was. Helpless, furious tears streamed from the corners of her eyes, cutting through the dust on her cheeks. The twin assaults were unbearable. The tickling was a madness, a total loss of bodily control that short-circuited her grandiose plans. And the smell… the raw, intimate, sweaty smell of the woman she obsessed over, forced into her nose… it was a profanity she couldn't process.
Her sophisticated curses, her intricate constructions, they meant nothing here. This was something else.
"Dude, she's literally twitching," Maki noted, prodding Yorozu’s shoulder with her boot toe.
Yuta finally pulled back, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. Yorozu’s feet were pink and glistening. She lay sobbing, utterly broken, all her manic energy spent. The binding technique eased, but she didn't move.
"Happy now?" Yuta asked Maki, looking up at her.
Maki shrugged. She tossed the damp socks onto Yorozu’s heaving stomach. "She won't be stalking me for a while. Let's go. I'm hungry."
Yuta stood, brushing off his knees. He took one last look at the sniveling, shattered sorcerer on the ground, then offered his arm to Maki. She ignored it, already heading for the rooftop door, but slowed just enough for him to fall into step beside her.
Behind them, under a darkening pink sky, Yorozu whispered to nothing, her nose full of salt and defeat, her feet still tingling with a ghost of a touch she would never, ever understand.
