Chapter 1: Introduction
The bustling Tokyo night bar scene was alive, every multicolored neon bulb advertising a new flavor, teasing senses and conjuring impossible allurements. Haruto had been to this bar before - a local favorite that wore its grittiness with pride, its baseball decorations a siren call to drunken journos and salaried workers. It blared deafening music, yet Tradewind Blue Antonio Persuasion, a smooth jazz track, sailed drunkenly Miles-and-miles above the hullabaloo.
This bar somehow managed to feel like a warm buzzing hug, welcoming in its chaotic realm. A cacophony of laughter and overzealous, hollering voices filled the close-knit quarters, mingling with the shrill sound of ice against glass. liveliness hummed, creating a perfectly livable bubbling inebriation that swept up anyone who stepped through their threshold.
Haruto had always been an observer. This bar provided him with many opportunities, shadows to hide behind and window ledges to stare out from, as he listened in on conversations around him.
Tonight, baseball was on everyone's lips, and the stories of the new American signing, Mitchell, had caught Haruto's attention. Stories of his charm and tall tales of his playing prowess buzzed around the bar like wildfire as he sipped his scotch. Anticipation fluttered in Haruto's chest, as he mulled over whether to extend a friendly hand to the new guy.
The bar door swung open, and in walked a tall figure. Mitchell.
The new American prodigy was tall, with a bodybuilder's form draped in confidence. His blond curls drooped boyishly and reminded Haruto of the surfer dudes in the Californian movies. He had a chiseled jaw as sharp as a pocketknife that matched his piercing blue eyes. Mitchell scanned the bar, smiling the easy smile of someone who knew he was special, and slid into an unoccupied booth.
He was at ease, drawing every female eye in the room like fluttering moths.
Haruto watched Mitchell from his corner, curious about this new ambassador of his beloved sport. He wondered how Mitchell would find Tokyo, and if the language barrier would be a frustration or an adventure. He was more astonished by how unconcerned Mitchell appeared, confidently relaxing as he watched the crowd.
A flock of women nestled into Mitchell's booth, their giggles mingling with the chorus of ambient bar music.
Haruto observed the exchange, amusement tugging at the corners of his mouth as he watched the practiced charm Mitchell unleashed upon the unsuspecting crowd. Each laugh, each smile, calculated and razor-sharp, the immaculate wit and timing of a practiced playboy.
An inexplicable curiosity coaxed Haruto from his seat, his walk toward Mitchell's booth steady and confident, battery-charged with determination. A woman fell in step beside him, cottony lavender perfume cloaking him like a lover's embrace.
