Chapter 1: Introduction
A dreamy haze blanketed the sprawling campus, ambling young women and men, fringed trees, and lush green quads. The golden autumn sun cast long shadows, as sunlight danced in the languid breeze. Madeline Thompson, a golden-haired vision, ambled through the grounds in her gauzy dress. Daisies and violets peeked from her sun-kissed locks. She carried a gentle demeanor, a love for her Lord cloistered in her heart.
A true all-American sweetheart, Madeline emanated innocence. Yet a hidden desire bubbled under her squeaky-clean exterior.
Frolicking on the fringes of the lush landscape, she reveled in horses' wildness, dancing leaves, and Taylor Swift's angelic voice. Her dreams painted an image of marrying a charming gentleman, raising their beloved offspring, and leading a devoutly religious life.
Through her meanderings, Madeline found herself nearing the grandiose Psychology building.
Anxious about her impending class, her golden locks flailed in the wind as she quickened her pace. At class, she sat with her sorority girls, of course.
A group of clones, all wearing pastel outfits, giggling and gossiping. Their unwavering camaraderie brought Madeline comfort. Today's lesson explored the human mind's obscurities, which she found both intriguing and eerie.
As her eyes scanned around the class, a young African-American woman caught her eye. Slender yet athletic, she donned an eclectic mix of streetwear Madeline would never wear and a distinct vibe of confidence or arrogance. Mesmerizing dark braids cascaded down her back, and her eyes appeared warm and compassionate.
"How is Jake?" One of Madeline's sorority sisters asked, innocently popping the question. Madeline's high school sweetheart, Jake Miller, still held her heart in his hands despite her ambivalence towards their exclusive relationship.
"He's... Fine," Madeline replied, her eyes wandering over to the girl.
Jake Miller was an unwaveringly charming, wealthy, and handsome athletic scholar. Despite his stunning looks and wealthy upbringing, he concealed his shortcomings beneath a veneer of suavity.
His short black hair and hazel eyes often captivated the young co-eds. The ladies adored his witty banter, irresistible charisma, and solid muscles that spoke of athletic commitment.
Sadly, he was also a well-known ladies' man.
Amid these musings, the professor introduced the group project, and Madeline could almost hear the gears in everyone's heads turning. Winnie Johnson tapped her pen impatiently, her mind racing at the thought of having to work in a group.
"Thompson and Johnson..." the professor announced.
"Will be interesting to see how this unfolds," Madeline whispered.
Her sorority sisters chuckled wickedly, while Winnie raised her perfectly sculpted eyebrow, smirking at the challenge laid at her feet.
Winnie had arrived in this small Midwestern town from a far more urban and diverse environment. The epitome of coolness and nonchalance, she was studying music production and constantly dreamt of conquering the music world with an open mind and no filters.
As the professor announced their names, Madeline hesitated in approaching her. The very notion of getting to know someone so unapologetically different made her uneasy. Madeline could feel her heart pounding in her chest, but forcing a smile, she extended her hand and introduced herself tentatively.
"Hey Winnie, I'm Madeline. I guess we're working together on the group project," Madeline said, trying to sound casual, but sounding overly polite and cheerful as always. Winnie looked at her hand, then up at Madeline.
Her eyes hesitated, weighing Madeline up and down with a wittily sarcastic glimmer. "Winnie, nice to meet you Madeline," she finally said, accepting the handshake, her grip firm and confident.
A stark contrast to Madeline's petite frame, Winnie radiated charisma and a smidgeon of defiance that both intrigued and intimidated Madeline. Their worlds couldn't be any more different.
"Well—uh—we should set out the guidelines of the project, get our discussion topics," Madeline stammered nervously. Winnie smirked.
"I think that's a great idea, Madeline. Why don't we get together sometime this week and brainstorm?" The proposal seemed genuine, but Madeline couldn't shake the feeling that the word 'brainstorm' was dripping with a hint of sarcasm. She reluctantly agreed.
Reverberating against the university's red-brick walls, laughter giddily spilled from her mouth as she and Winnie departed. They made plans to meet in the library, nestled in the campus's heart.
With its cozy corners, imposing stacks of books, and the gentle whisper of pages turning, it was an unassuming venue.
Stepping into the library, Madeline found Winnie already there, bent over a thick textbook. Wearing a casual black hoodie, ripped jeans, and oversized headphones, she resembled the epitome of a rebellious teen from the nineties. She glanced up as Madeline entered, her warm eyes holding a glimmer of smugness. Jake waved to Winnie and kissed Madeline goodbye.
"High-school sweetheart?" Winnie questioned half-jokingly.
Her tone rung sarcastic yet curious. The term high-school sweetheart has been a cliché that made its way into every coming-of-age movie and romance novel on the shelves.
"Yes, Jake and I have been together since I was 16 years old," Madeline replied, a soft smile graced her lips as she thought about how her storybook romance with Jake began, and how she held on to it with all her heart.
