Chapter 1: Introduction
The sun was a blazing orange orb, slowly dipping below the horizon as the Black Hawk helicopter cut through the African sky. Aminah gripped the control stick, her eyes scanning the instruments with practiced ease. The hum of the helicopter's engines was a familiar symphony, a comforting lullaby that always calmed her nerves. She checked the fuel gauge, the altitude, and the coordinates of their destination—a remote military base in need of urgent supplies.
Beside her, Fatimah sat at the copilot's seat, her hands dancing over the controls with an agility that belied her youth.
She was her mother's daughter, through and through—confident, daring, and with a sharp tongue that could cut through metal. "Mom, you're frowning. Everything okay?" she asked, leaning in to catch a glimpse of the instruments.
Aminah glanced at her, a hint of a smile playing on her lips. "Just tired of these damned rebels playing hide and seek with us. We should be over the base by now."
Fatimah chuckled, "Patience, Mom. They'll show up when they're good and ready.
You know how these fucking rebels are," Fatimah said, her voice laced with a mixture of frustration and understanding. Aminah nodded, her eyes scanning the vast expanse of land below. The sun was dipping lower, painting the sky with hues of red and gold.
"Captain, we've got a fucking problem," Fatimah suddenly announced, her voice sharp and urgent. Aminah's eyes snapped to the console in front of her, where the fuel gauge was blinking ominously.
"What the fuck is that?" Aminah growled, her fingers gripping the controls tighter.
The helicopter lurched, the engine sputtering and coughing like a dying man. "We're not making it to the base," she said, her voice low and grim. "We're going down." She scanned the horizon, her eyes searching for a safe place to land. But this was rebel territory— there was no such thing as safe here.
They managed to bring the helicopter down in a relatively clear area, the ground shaking as the metal bird kissed the earth. Aminah and Fatimah quickly secured the cockpit, their hearts pounding in their chests. They were stranded, in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by enemies.
Aminah and Fatimah looked at each other, a silent understanding passing between them. They were in deep shit, but they were in it together.
The rebels found them quickly, swarming like ants around a dropped crumb. They were a ragtag bunch, dressed in a mishmash of military uniforms and civilian clothes, their weapons a menacing mix of old and new.
Aminah and Fatimah were hauled to their feet, their hands roughly tied behind their backs. They were marched through the dense underbrush, the stench of sweat and fear clinging to their captors like a second skin.
