Chapter 1: Opening Image
James's life revolved around a single, proud goal—maxing out every level in "Harem Kings," the lewd harem gacha game that had infiltrated the better part of his waking hours (and, if truth be told, some sleeping hours too). He sat at his desk in an apartment he shared with three roommates, curled up in one of the beanbag chairs, staring intently at the game on his computer screen.
It was a small yet cozy space, strewn with laundry and empty takeout cartons.
The walls were covered with posters of anime girls, and the air was thick with the heavy aroma of stale cigarette smoke and pizza. The desk was cluttered with an assortment of gaming accessories, a keyboard and mouse, a headset, and a gamepad. In one corner of the room, an overflowing ashtray lay on top of a stack of unread comics.
James's roommates knew not to bother him when he was in this zone.
They'd given up on asking him to socialize, to go out for a drink or hit up a party. It wasn't always like this, of course. There was a time when James was out and about, laughing and joking with friends, chasing girls, and living the life of a typical 25-year-old.
But something changed. It started with a game—a colorful, addictive harem gacha game that promised the thrill of collecting beautiful, busty women, each with their own unique personalities and skills.
The more time he spent playing, the more invested James became in the game.
He would wake up early in the morning to log in and see who he could add to his collection, and he'd stay up late into the night, strategizing on how to win the next battle, how to unlock the next level, how to earn the most points.
But as the game's 3D models grew more detailed, more lifelike, James found himself drawn to them in a way that went beyond simple game mechanics.
He started to fantasize about them—about the smoothness of their skin, the curve of their breasts, the lustrous shine of their hair.
It was unhealthy, he knew. But the game was designed to appeal to that part of his brain that craved control, that wanted to feel powerful, to have an army of women at his fingertips.
And so James continued to play—to grind and strategize, to unlock new levels and new characters. He told himself it was just a harmless hobby, something to keep him occupied during his free time.
After all, he had no girlfriend, no real friends to speak of, no job that paid well enough to justify the hours he spent playing.
But as the days turned into weeks and the weeks into months, James found himself sinking deeper and deeper into the world of "Harem Kings."
The characters became more than just pixels on a screen. They became real to him, vivid figures that haunted his dreams and filled his thoughts.
