Chapter 1: Introduction

As Anna stood in the playground, she couldn't help but feel restless. She had been waiting for Jane to arrive for what seemed like hours. Her friend Sarah was with her, but even her presence wasn't enough to stifle Anna's boredom. The sun shone brightly overhead, casting a warm glow over the playground, and the jovial sounds of children playing were a stark contrast to Anna's mood.

Suddenly, Anna spotted Jane approaching.

She straightened her back and tilted her chin, ready to pounce on the small girl as soon as she arrived. "Hey, Jane," she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "I was starting to think you weren't coming."

Jane hugged her books to her chest and glanced nervously at Anna. "Hi, Anna," she said quietly.

"What are you bringing books for?" Anna scoffed. "We're not going to be studying out here.

We're going to hang out and have fun," Sarah said, trying to sound reassuring.

Anna snorted, clearly unimpressed. "Whatever. It's your problem if you want to waste your time with a loser like Jane."

Sarah looked at Anna with anger but also a hint of sadness. She had known Anna since they were little kids and had thought at one point they were friends. But over the years, Anna had become more and more mean and cruel. Sarah couldn't understand why someone would want to be so hurtful to others.

She wished there was something she could do to make things better for Jane, but she didn't know how.

As Anna continued to bully Jane, Wanda approached the scene. She had seen the whole thing from a distance and couldn't believe what she was witnessing. "Excuse me," she said, her voice stern. "Is there a problem here?"

Anna turned to face her, a smirk on her face. "I don't think there's a problem, Officer.

Jane is just being a baby," Anna said, sneering at the petite girl.

Wanda glared at Anna, unimpressed by her reply. "I think there might be a problem here. Jane looks scared and intimidated, and I don't think it's right to treat another person that way," she said firmly.

Anna rolled her eyes, unmoved by Wanda's words. "I don't see what the matter is. I'm just having a bit of fun. It's called roughhousing," she said defensively.

But Wanda was having none of it. "I don't care what you call it," she said firmly. "It's clear to me that you're causing this girl distress, and that's unacceptable."

Anna scowled at Wanda, but she knew the officer was right. She had never liked Jane and hadn't really cared what happened to her, but she had never wanted to get caught and punished.

As Wanda spoke to Anna, Sarah stood off to the side, feeling guilty for not doing anything to stop Anna's bullying.

She knew that Jane was terrified of Anna, and the fact that she had been the one to introduce them was starting to weigh heavily on her conscience.

Meanwhile, Anna felt a mixture of emotions as Wanda confronted her. On one hand, she was irritated that she had been caught and called out for her behavior. On the other hand, she was also nervous about what might happen next, especially since she had always heard stories about the repercussions of bullying.

As Wanda continued to speak, Anna's unease grew.

She had always been able to get away with bullying others, but now, she was being held accountable for her actions. Her heart raced as she tried to come up with an excuse, anything to get out of this situation unscathed. But nothing came to mind.

Wanda's gaze remained fixed on Anna, a stern expression etched on her face. "I'll be letting the school know about this," she said, her voice low but firm.

"You should think twice before picking on someone smaller than you. And you," she added, pointing to Sarah, "should consider who you associate with. This kind of bullying is not acceptable, and you should know better."

With that, Wanda walked away, leaving Anna standing alone with her thoughts.

Jane watched as the officer left, tears streaming down her face.

Sarah was filled with regret, wishing she had done something to prevent the bullying from happening.

Meanwhile, Wanda walked back to her squad car, her mind racing.

She had seen many incidents of bullying in her line of work, but this one had hit particularly close to home. She had gone to the same high school as Anna and Sarah, and she remembered all too well the taunts and teasing that had been a regular part of her childhood.

As she reached her car, Wanda took a deep breath, trying to calm her nerves. She knew she needed to stay professional and objective, but it was hard to suppress the emotions that were rising within her.
