It's late summer. Back-to-school sales have started. 48-year-old Sophie Thomas and her 18-year-old daughter, Emily, go to the Almonds Department Store. Emily will be leaving for college in a few weeks, and she needs clothes and supplies. The Almonds Department Store is a franchise store. Matthew Reilly, 53, owns this particular store. Matthew spots the mother and daughter entering his store through the security monitors in his office. He finds Emily really cute and uses facial recognition software to learn everything about the mother and daughter. He presses a button that signals Mellissa White, 23, the floor manager of the Women's Department. She looks up at the security camera, nods, and approaches Sophie and Emily to greet them. Music filled with subliminal messages pumps through the store's speaker system, and Mellissa knows she has to keep Sophie and Emily in the store for the subliminal messages to take effect. All Almonds Department Stores have the same type of speaker system. The subliminal messages make customers more susceptible to suggestions. They wouldn't compel them to buy anything they didn't want, but if they were on the fence about something, a push from the salesperson would get them to buy it. But Matthew wanted more than that. He added gadgets throughout the store to target messages at anyone he wanted. After helping Sophie and Emily with school supplies for ten minutes, she led them to the jewelry department, where they met Sarah, 22, at the counter. Melissa and Sarah talked Emily into trying on a pair of glasses. When she put them on, subliminal messages and commands flashed in her eyes. She doesn't seem to notice. She looks at herself in the mirror and decides not to get the glasses. No one ever buys that pair of glasses. They said bye to Sarah as Melissa led them to the women's clothes and intimates. Melissa helps Emily pick out clothes and underwear that show off a lot of skin and make her look sexy. They take the clothes and head towards the dressing room. Emily enters one of the stalls with all the clothes in her arms, while Melissa and Sophie wait outside. As Emily begins to change, she notices one of the walls slide open, and Matthew, a man she's never met before, is standing there naked. She smiles as he steps inside with her.

Chapter 1: Chapter 1

The moment they stepped through the automatic doors, the store exhaled a cool, perfumed breath. Sophie paused to adjust her purse strap, while Emily's gaze drifted past the racks of autumnal jackets to the gleaming tiled aisles stretching ahead like a promise. Soft, indistinct music filtered through hidden speakers, a lazy jazz melody that curled around the bright buzz of afternoon shoppers. Emily vaguely noticed the tune seemed to keep looping on the same few bars. She dismissed it.

A few hundred feet away, Matthew Reilly leaned into the blue glow of his monitor wall. His fingers paused, mid-motion, as facial recognition software framed two faces in the crowded lobby feed. A mother and her daughter. He tapped a key, and a column of personal data scrolled down his secondary screen. Home address, school records, birth dates. Emily Thomas, eighteen. Fall enrollment confirmed. He let out a slow, quiet breath.

Then he pressed the glowing button on his console, and in the women's department, Melissa White stopped mid-sentence, her head tilting toward the entrance as if she'd heard her name called from a great distance.

Melissa smoothed her skirt and walked, unhurried, across the Women's Department floor. Her heels clicked a neat rhythm that matched the lazy jazz spilling from the ceiling speakers. By the time she reached the entrance, she wore a bright, easy smile.

"Afternoon, ladies. Can I help you find anything today?"

Sophie's face relaxed with relief. "My daughter is about to start her first year at college," she said, gesturing toward Emily. "We need to get her set up with everything. School supplies, clothes, all of it."

Melissa's smile widened, and she angled her body toward them in an open, welcoming stance. "Well, you've come to the right place." She looked Emily over with a practiced, appreciative gaze. "And what are you planning to study, sweetheart?"

Emily shifted her weight, a little flustered under the attention. "Psychology, maybe. Or marketing. I haven't totally decided."

"Marketing's a smart choice," Melissa said smoothly. "You've got the face for it." She turned and gestured down the bright aisle ahead of her as the music swelled to fill the space between them. "Let's start with some school supplies. I'll show you where everything is."

Melissa led them through a turn and down a long aisle lined with three-ring binders in a rainbow of colors, spiral notebooks stacked in neat pyramids, and plastic folders with elastic closures. At the far end, a glass counter shone beneath bright pendant lights, displaying laptops and tablets on small chrome stands.

"Here's your territory," Melissa said, spreading a hand toward the shelves. "Binders, notebooks, calendars, organizers. The boring stuff that keeps your semester from falling apart."

Emily ran her fingers along a row of notebooks, testing the weight of one with a marble-patterned cover. "How many do I need for, like, five classes?"

"Better to start with eight," Melissa said. "You'll fill them faster than you think." She plucked a sturdy black binder from the shelf and handed it to Emily. "And this one's going to survive getting tossed in a backpack a hundred times."

Sophie picked up a wall calendar printed with watercolor mountains. "For her dorm room," she said, tilting it toward Melissa. "So she can keep track of deadlines."

"Good idea. You'll want something you can actually see," Melissa said. She glanced toward the far end of the aisle, where a young woman in a store vest was wiping the glass display counter. "When you're done here, we'll go check out the tech. There's a tablet on sale this week that's perfect for note-taking."

Emily's eyes brightened. "Really? Which one?"

"Come see," Melissa said, already walking. Emily followed, and Sophie lingered a moment, running her thumb over the calendar's glossy surface before tucking it under her arm and catching up.

Matthew watched them through the monitor. He always liked watching Melissa work. She moved through the aisles like water finding its own level, guiding the mother and daughter from one display to the next without a single wasted gesture. He watched her laugh at something Sophie said, watched Emily's shoulders relax inch by inch. She was good. Better than good. She had the instincts of a natural predator wrapped in a sales associate's smile.

He glanced at the timer in the corner of his screen. Six minutes forty-one seconds remaining.

The jazz changed tempo, the saxophone sliding into a lower register. Matthew checked the subliminal threshold on his audio console: nominal. Every sentence the women heard was layered with masked suggestions, barely above the threshold of conscious perception.

The system was standard issue. Every Almonds Department Store in the chain ran the same low-frequency audio layer beneath its in-store music, a quiet pulse of masked phrasing designed to nudge undecided shoppers toward purchase. It had been installed for over a decade. It worked, and it worked well. If a customer hovered over a toaster oven or a pair of jeans, a gentle suggestion from a floor associate tipped the scale. The returns rate stayed low; the conversion rate climbed. Nobody ever noticed the layer, because there was nothing to notice. It was simply good business, the way the soft lighting and the scent diffusers were good business.

Shoppers needed a full ten minutes under the audio layer. At the seven-minute mark, their suggestions began to feel like their own thoughts. At ten, the window opened.

Matthew tapped the corner of his screen. Seven minutes forty-eight seconds. He could see Melissa guiding them away from laptops and tablet displays; Sophie held tablet and laptop purchase tickets in her hand.

Melissa turned to face them fully. The jazz rippled overhead, saxophone curling low. "Now that you've chosen your school supplies, do you have any thoughts about what you're going to wear? We have some great sales on clothing and jewelry."

Emily's eyes flicked past the tech displays toward the soft-lit racks of dresses beyond. "I mean, I guess I need stuff. Real clothes, for classes and stuff."

Melissa glanced at the clock mounted on the wall, her expression unhurried. Ten minutes on the nose.

"Sounds good, but let's stop in jewelry first," she said, guiding them with a gentle hand at Emily's elbow. "There are some items that would look amazing on you."

They rounded a corner into a brighter aisle, where glass cases gleamed under warm spotlights. Sarah looked up from wiping a counter and smiled as they approached. "Melissa! Bringing me customers or just company?"

"Both," Melissa said. "Em here is headed off to college. She needs something that pops."

Sarah's pale eyes swept over Emily, then settled on a tray of thin gold chains. "Let me guess. Something delicate, but with presence." She slid open the case and held up a pendant. "This or the hoops?"

Emily reached for the chain, and Sarah's fingers brushed hers. "Try these on," Sarah said. "There's a mirror behind you."

The pendant settled just above her collarbone, and Sarah smiled. "That gold chain looks great on you. You know what you should try next? Glasses. I have the perfect pair for you."

"But I don't wear glasses," Emily replied.

"Fashion glasses," Sarah said smoothly, reaching beneath the counter. "No prescription. Just style. Trust me."

She placed a pair of thin, tortoiseshell frames in Emily's palm. The lenses shimmered faintly, almost imperceptibly. Emily lifted them, hesitated, and slid them on.

Matthew leaned forward, elbows on the console, and studied the live feed. The glasses sat neatly on Emily's face, the tortoiseshell frames catching the overhead light. On his secondary screen, a waveform pulsed steadily, confirming the visual layer was active. He typed a quick command and watched the diagnostic readout climb: signal strength nominal, retinal tracking locked.

Through the monitor, he saw Emily turn to the mirror and tilt her head, studying her reflection. She looked vaguely puzzled for a moment, her gaze lingering a beat longer than natural, then she smiled and pushed the frames up the bridge of her nose.

"They're cute," she said. "But I don't think I need them."

Matthew watched her lift the glasses off and hand them back to Sarah. The waveform on his screen went flat, but the diagnostic log scrolled upward with a soft green tick. Exposure time: forty-two seconds. Enough to prime her. The suggestion was already lodged beneath her conscious thoughts.

Sarah slid the glasses back into their case beneath the counter, and Emily's gaze drifted to the gold pendant still resting in her palm. She turned it over, the chain whispering against her fingers. Then she looked across the counter at Sophie. "Mom, is it okay if we get the chain?"

Sophie leaned in, squinted at the small tag, and blinked at the price. But her expression softened at the eager look on Emily's face. "It's a little more than I planned," she said, "but if it's the one you love, we'll get it."

Emily grinned and slid the pendant onto her neck, the thin gold settling below her collarbone. Sarah flashed a bright smile and noted the purchase on her register screen. "Lovely. It suits you."

Melissa collected the receipt and already steered them toward the racks of dresses and soft-lit mannequins. "And now the fun part," she said, her voice bright under the lingering jazz. "Let's find you something that shows off that new chain."

Melissa led them into a brighter corner of the department where mannequins stood in sundresses and halter tops, their plastic limbs angled in casual poses. She stopped at a circular rack and pulled out a small crop top in a soft rose color, the kind Emily had only ever worn to sleep in.

"Oh, that's cute," Emily said, reaching for it.

"Try this one." Melissa plucked a pair of denim shorts so short they barely covered a hand's span, the hem frayed at the edges.

Sophie made a small noise. "Those are a little... short, aren't they?"

"Everything's short this season," Melissa said lightly. "They're everywhere on campuses right now."

Emily held the shorts up against her hips. The denim skimmed the top of her thighs. A knot tightened low in her stomach, not discomfort, but something electric.

Melissa leaned in close, her lips almost brushing Emily's ear. "And just imagine how the boys would look at you. You'd drive them crazy."

The words landed like heat on her skin. Emily's breath caught, and something low in her belly twisted and bloomed. She had never wanted that before, had never let herself think about it. But now the image came sharp and vivid. Boys turning their heads. Boys watching her in those shorts. Her stomach fluttered, and a small, thrilling shiver ran down her spine.

"Yeah," she said, her voice a little breathless. "I'll try these."

Sophie glanced at the shorts again. "Em, are you sure? Those are really, really short."

Emily laughed. It came out lighter than she expected, almost teasing. "Mom. Everyone wears these now. It's fine."

Sophie opened her mouth, then closed it. She looked at Melissa, who smiled warmly, reassuringly.

"College style," Melissa said, as if that settled everything.

Sophie sighed, but there was a fondness in it. "Fine."

Melissa turned back to the rack and pulled out two more pairs of shorts, one in white and one in black, both cut just as high as the denim. She held them up side by side. "These would look amazing with that rose top. The white one especially, with your tan."

Emily reached out and touched the frayed hem of the white pair. The fabric was soft, worn in a way that suggested they'd been handled a lot. "Oh. These are even shorter."

"Right? That's the look." Melissa set them in Emily's arms and reached for a shelf of folded tops. She pulled out a tiny white crop top with thin straps, then a black one with a deep V neckline that dipped far lower than anything Emily owned. "These go with either pair."

Emily held the black top against her chest. The fabric barely covered the underside of her ribs. Her reflection in the nearby mirror showed more skin than fabric. Her breath shallowed again, and she liked how that felt.

"Now this," Melissa said, sliding a hanger off a nearby rack, "this is for that chain."

The dress was pale yellow, almost the exact shade of liquid honey. Tiny straps, a square neckline, and a hem that ended high on the thigh. It was made for late summer evenings when the sun wouldn't set until almost nine. She handed it to Emily, who took it with both hands, running her thumb over the smooth cotton.

"It's so light," Emily said.

"It'll catch the sunlight." Melissa's voice dropped a little. "And the gold pendant will sit right there, just above your collarbone. Perfect."

Emily held the yellow dress against her chest, the fabric whispering against her skin. Melissa stepped in close, her lips grazing Emily's ear.

"God, you'll make every guy hard by just looking at you when you wear one of these outfits."

The words hit her like a jolt of warm electricity. Emily's breath caught. Her cheeks flushed, and a strange, heady thrill coiled low in her stomach. She had never thought about it that way before. Never let herself imagine that kind of power. But the idea of it, of being seen like that, of being wanted like that, it was hot. And a little funny, really. She let out a small, breathless giggle, the sound escaping before she could stop it.

Sophie looked up from a rack of blouses. "What did she say to you?"

"Just that this dress will catch the sun," Emily said, her voice a touch too bright. She turned the hanger over in her hands. "Mom, can I try everything on? I want to see how it all looks together."

Sophie's eyes flicked to the stack of shorts and tops in Emily's arms, then to Melissa, who smiled her easy, reassuring smile. "Of course," Sophie said, though her brow creased faintly. "We'll wait right here."

Emily clutched the clothes to her chest and headed for the row of dressing rooms at the back of the department. The music followed her, the saxophone sliding into another slow, looping refrain. She pushed open the door to a stall and paused, her heart beating a little faster.

She turned the lock and hooked the dress and shorts over the back of the door, then caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror. The thought of boys turning their heads made her feel light, giddy, powerful.

She lifted the sundress over her head and let it fall to the floor. The cool air of the dressing room touched her bare skin. She stood in her bra and panties for a moment, the floral cotton pooling at her feet.

The crop top slid over her head easily. It was so small that it stopped just beneath her ribs, leaving her stomach and lower back completely bare. The shorts were next. She stepped into them and wiggled them up over her hips, and the frayed denim hugged her skin like a second layer of warmth.

She turned to face the mirror. The reflection startled her.

The rose top rode high, the fabric barely cradling her breasts, and the shorts vanished at the top of her thighs. A wide strip of pale, smooth skin ran from her belly button down to the denim, and her hip bones jutted out sharp and clean above the waistband. She looked hot. Genuinely, stupidly hot. She had never looked like this before. She liked it.

She turned her back to the mirror and looked over her shoulder.

The shorts did nothing to cover her. The curve of her ass swelled out beneath the frayed hem, the bottom of her cheeks peeking out as if the fabric had given up entirely. She bent forward at the waist, craning to see how much of her ass was actually showing.

"Nice ass."

The voice came from inches behind her. A man's voice, low and soft, whispered directly into her ear. Her whole body went rigid. She spun around, heart slamming against her ribs.

The dressing room wall behind her was open, a sliding panel tucked back into the frame. The man stood there. Older, grey hair cropped close, lean and tanned, with a thin smile and steady, unblinking eyes. He was completely naked and completely hard.

Emily's breath stopped. The room went quiet except for the distant murmur of the jazz filtering through the walls. She should have screamed. She should have grabbed her sundress and shoved past him, yelled for her mother. But her body wouldn't move.

Her gaze dropped.

He was hard, thick and heavy, jutting out from a neat patch of grey hair. The skin was flushed a deep rose, and a single bead of clear fluid glistened at the slit. His shaft rose long and straight, the head swollen and smooth, his balls hanging low and full beneath. Her mouth went dry.

"It's called attraction, Emily." His voice was calm, unhurried. "It's natural to stare."

She blinked, and her cheeks flamed. "I'm not, I wasn't, who are you?"

"Matthew Reilly. I own this store." He didn't move toward her, didn't reach out. He just stood there, letting her look. "You're wearing one of the outfits Melissa picked for you. It's perfect."

Somewhere inside her, a warning siren blared behind glass, muffled and distant. She should want to leave. She should be afraid. But the heat between her thighs had spread, sharp and wet, and her nipples had gone tight against the thin fabric of the rose top. She could feel the tips pressing through, hard and obvious.

"You're not supposed to be here," she managed. "This is the dressing room."

"And yet here I am." He took a single step closer, close enough that his cock hung inches from her bare stomach. "Do you want me to go?"

Her throat worked. No response. No protest. Her body answered for her, a tiny shake of her head.

Her voice came out thin, strained. "Can I... can I taste it?"

Matthew's smile widened, a slow, satisfied curve. "Yes."

He stepped closer, the heat of his body washing over her bare skin. Emily dropped to her knees on the cold tile floor, her hands trembling as they reached for him. She wrapped her fingers around the base of his shaft, feeling the heat and weight of it in her palm. It was thick, far thicker than she'd imagined, the skin smooth and hot.

She leaned in and pressed her lips to the head. The taste was salty, musky, unfamiliar. Her tongue darted out, lapping at the bead of fluid glistening at the slit, and a shiver ran through her. She opened her mouth wider and took him in, the head sliding past her lips and pressing against her tongue.

Matthew's hand settled on the back of her head, fingers threading through her blonde hair. "That's it," he murmured. "Take it slow."

She did. Her mouth worked along his length, her tongue tracing the ridge beneath the head, her hand stroking the base in a rhythm she invented on the spot. The taste of him spread across her tongue, salty and thick, and she found herself wanting more.

He groaned, low and guttural. "God, you're a natural."

The praise sent a thrill through her. She took him deeper, her throat opening, her eyes watering as she pushed herself further. His grip tightened in her hair, and he began to guide her, slow strokes that made her moan around him. The sound vibrated through his cock, and he shuddered.

She took him deeper, her throat opening around the thick head, and Matthew's grip tightened in her hair. His breathing quickened, ragged and uneven above her. "That's it," he said, voice strained. "Deeper."

She wanted to obey. The thought surfaced with a strange, easy clarity, as if it had been waiting there all along. She relaxed her jaw, pushed forward, and swallowed him to the root. His cock pressed against the back of her throat, thick and hot, and she gagged once, tears spilling down her cheeks.

He held her there. She could feel him pulsing against her tongue, feel every inch of him stretched inside her mouth. Her hands gripped his thighs, nails biting into the skin, and a low moan vibrated through her.

Matthew groaned and pulled her off him, her lips leaving his shaft with a wet pop. Saliva glistened in a strand from her lower lip to the swollen head. He hauled her to her feet and spun her around.

He spun her to face the full-length mirror, her palms flat against the cool surface. Behind her, his body pressed close, the heat of his chest against her bare back. Her reflection stared back, wide-eyed and flushed, the rose crop top riding high, the denim shorts hugging her hips.

His lips found the curve of her neck. A slow, deliberate kiss just below her ear. She watched his mouth move against her skin, watched her own throat work as she swallowed. His hands slid up her sides, thumbs tracing the underside of her ribs, and he kissed the slope of her shoulder.

"Watch," he murmured against her skin.

She did. Her gaze stayed locked on the mirror as his fingers hooked under the hem of the crop top and lifted. The fabric slid up her stomach, baring her belly inch by inch. Emily watched the pale cotton of her own bra appear in the mirror, the simple fabric stretched taut over her breasts. Her nipples were already hard, visible even through the cloth.

Matthew's hands hooked the straps and pulled them down her shoulders. The bra slid away and dropped to the floor. Her breasts swayed free, pale and full, the nipples tight and dark. She watched her own reflection as his palms came up and cupped them, his thumbs circling the stiff peaks.

"Look how beautiful you are," he said.

She couldn't look away from the mirror. His hands kneaded her breasts, rolling the nipples between his fingers until she gasped. A wet heat pooled between her thighs, soaking through the thin denim of the shorts.

He ground his cock against her ass, the thick shaft sliding between her cheeks through the fabric. Even with the denim between them, she could feel how hard he was, how hot.

Then his hands left her breasts and went to the button of the shorts. He undid it, and the zipper slid down. The frayed denim sagged forward, revealing the damp patch of her white panties. He tugged the shorts down her hips, and they fell to the floor in a heap.

"Bend over the bench," he said.

She obeyed without thinking. Her palms found the padded seat, her chest flat against the cushion, her ass raised and bare. She could see herself in the mirror opposite, the position utterly exposed, her pussy slick between her thighs.

He stepped between her legs. The head of his cock pressed against her wet slit, and she cried out at the contact.

Matthew's lips brushed her ear as the head of his cock pressed harder against her slick slit. "Shh," he breathed. "You don't want your mother to catch us, do you?"

Emily froze.

She hadn't thought about that. Her mother was right outside, a few feet away, just on the other side of the door. Sophie was probably checking her phone, maybe browsing the rack of blouses, completely unaware that her daughter was bent over a dressing room bench with a stranger's cock wedged between her thighs.

The thought should have terrified her. Instead, it lit a fire that raced through her blood, sharp and urgent and dizzyingly hot. Her breath came faster. Her pussy clenched around nothing, slick and aching. The idea that they could get caught, of her mother walking in on this exact moment, made everything sharper. More dangerous. More thrilling.

"Yes," she gasped. "Fuck, yes, please."

Matthew laughed low and pushed forward.

His cock slid into her in one thick, deliberate stroke. Emily cried out and gripped the bench cushion, her knuckles white. He filled her completely, the stretch burning and glorious, his balls pressed flush against her clit as he bottomed out inside her. She could feel every ridge, every pulsing inch of him.

"Quiet," he murmured, pulling almost all the way out. "Unless you want every shopper in the department store to hear how wet you are for a man three times your age."

The taunt made her moan, and she bit her own fist to swallow it. He drove back in, deeper this time, and her eyes rolled. The mirror across from her showed everything: her bare ass bouncing against his hips, his grey-haired body flexing as he fucked her, her own flushed face and parted lips. Her mother would walk in any second. The thought made her cunt clench around his cock like a fist.

Matthew's rhythm quickened, his hips snapping against her ass with a wet, rhythmic smack. Emily's eyes rolled back in her head, her fingers clawing at the bench cushion. The jazz outside swelled, notes curling through the door, and she could still hear her mother's occasional footsteps beyond the thin walls.

"Keep it quiet," Matthew breathed, his hand sliding down her spine. "You feel how good this is? You feel how deep I am inside you, Emily?"

She whimpered into her fist, her legs trembling. He was huge, every stroke hitting a place she hadn't known existed, sending sparks up her spine and down to her toes. The mirror showed her completely debased, bent over a dressing room bench, a stranger pounding into her while her mother browsed blouses ten feet away.

The mirror showed her completely debased, bent over a dressing room bench, a stranger pounding into her while her mother browsed blouses ten feet away. The shame and the pleasure tangled into something wicked and sweet. Her thighs shook.

Matthew's hand slid around her hip, fingers finding her clit. He rubbed in tight, fast circles timed to his strokes. "Come for me," he said. "Right now."

The command snapped through her. Emily bit down on her fist and came hard, her body clenching around his cock in wave after wave. Her vision went white. She heard herself make a small, strangled noise, muffled by her own knuckles.

He kept thrusting through it, his rhythm turning ragged. "That's it. Squeeze me, baby. Squeeze me dry."

Her cunt milked him, hot and tight, and he groaned low. He pulled out and grabbed her hip, spinning her around. The head of his cock glistened, slick with her. He stroked himself twice, three times, and then he came, thick ropes of cum painting her stomach and the rose crop top, splattering across her breasts. She watched it happen, transfixed, the heat of it landing on her skin in slow, heavy stripes.

He stood there a moment, breathing hard, his chest rising and falling. Then he reached past her for a roll of paper towels on a small shelf and handed it to her. "Clean up."

She did, blotting at her skin and the ruined fabric. The crop top was ruined. The shorts too, probably. She didn't care. The thought surfaced without resistance.

"Give any ruined clothes to Melissa; she'll take care of them." He pulled the sliding panel shut behind him, and the wall went seamless. Emily stood alone in the dressing room, the cum wiped from her skin, the clothes in her hands. A knock came at the door.

"Em? You alive in there?" Her mother's voice. Bright. Unaware.

Emily looked at the door. Then at her reflection. Her face was flushed, her lips swollen. She smiled.

"Yeah, Mom. I'll be out in a second."

Emily slipped the yellow dress over her head, the honey-colored cotton sliding down her skin like water. It caught the light, shimmering faintly, and the gold pendant settled just above her collarbone. She ran her palms down her thighs, smoothing the hem. It ended high, barely covering her hips. She looked at herself in the mirror, flushed and bright-eyed, and smiled.

She gathered the ruined crop top and shorts into a ball and tucked them under her arm. Then she pulled open the dressing room door.

Sophie looked up from her phone and beamed. "Oh, sweetheart. That dress is gorgeous on you."

Melissa stepped in close, her lips brushing Emily's ear. "Anything ruined?"

Emily nodded, her cheeks warming. She pressed the crumpled bundle of rose fabric and frayed denim into Melissa's waiting hands.

Melissa's fingers closed around the clothes, and she tucked them into the crook of her arm. Her smile never wavered. "I'll take care of these," she said, loud enough for Sophie to hear. "The dressing rooms are a mess today. I'll have them cleaned."

Sophie tilted her head, studying Emily. "You look different. Happier."

Emily touched the pendant at her neck. The gold was still warm from her skin. "I am," she said, and the words felt truer than they should have. "This dress feels like me."

Melissa returned a few minutes later, a folded stack of fabric in her hands. She set it on the counter beside Emily. The rose crop top, exact same cut, same color. The denim shorts, frayed and short, same high hem. She gave Emily a small, knowing smile.

"Everything you tried on, in case you want to compare sizes," Melissa said.

Sophie barely glanced up. "That's very thorough of you."

Emily smoothed the yellow dress over her hips. "I love this one. But I want to try the others again before we decide."

"Makes sense," Sophie said. "Take your time."

Emily gathered the new stack and walked back to the dressing room. She locked the door behind her and stood still for a moment, listening. The jazz drifted through the walls. Her mother's footsteps faded toward the blouse rack.

She looked at the ceiling, the corners, the small vent beside the mirror. She couldn't see them. But he owned the store. He'd appeared through a wall. Of course there were cameras. The thought made her stomach tighten with excitement.

She turned her back to the mirror and slowly unzipped the yellow dress, letting it slide down her shoulders and pool at her feet. She stood in her bra and panties, knowing he was watching, and let her fingers trail down her stomach.

She stepped into the white shorts and tugged them up, then pulled the black crop top over her head. The deep V neckline left little to the imagination. She posed, one hand on her hip, turning to show the curve of her ass under the frayed hem.

She tried the rose set next, then the black shorts with the white top, then the yellow dress again. Each outfit got a slow, deliberate performance. A bend to adjust the hem. A stretch that lifted the top. A smile at the mirror she pretended was just for herself.

She liked them all. She wanted all of them.

She pulled her floral sundress back on and gathered the outfits, draping the yellow dress over her arm. The gold pendant sat warm against her chest. She unlocked the door and stepped out.

Sophie smiled at her as she approached, the stack of chosen outfits draped over Emily's arm. "Ready to check out?"

"Yeah," Emily said, but her feet didn't move toward the registers. She looked down at the yellow dress, then back toward the dressing rooms. The jazz curled through the overhead speakers, soft and patient.

Melissa appeared at her elbow, guiding her gently toward the front of the department. "Let's get you rung up before the line gets long. I'll make sure everything's folded properly."

The register counter gleamed under bright lights. Melissa rang up each item with brisk efficiency: the yellow dress, the white shorts, the black crop top, the rose set. The total appeared on the screen, and Sophie's eyebrows rose, but she handed over her card without comment.

Emily watched the numbers tick by, a small thrill running through her. These weren't clothes for college orientation. They were for something else, something she couldn't quite name.

"Here you go, sweetheart," Melissa said, sliding the bags across the counter. Her fingers brushed Emily's as she took them. "Enjoy your new wardrobe. You're going to look amazing. Come back if you need anything else

The sliding glass doors hissed shut behind them, and the late-summer heat wrapped around Emily like a blanket. The parking lot shimmered, asphalt soft and sticky underfoot. Sophie dug her keys from her purse and pressed the unlock button; the sedan chirped twice in the distance.

Emily swung the store bags against her hip. The yellow dress hung in the front bag, tissue paper rustling. She could still feel the pendant warm against her chest, a small weight that pulsed like a reminder.

"Thanks for this, Mom," she said. "I know it was more than you planned."

Sophie smiled, tired and fond. "You're only eighteen once."

Emily kept her face smooth. "It's a nice store. Everyone was so helpful."

"Melissa especially." Sophie unlocked the trunk. "I should have gotten her number for you. For future shopping trips."

Emily helped her lift the bags into the trunk. The cardboard handles dug into her palm, and the thought came to her. She could come back alone. She could drive the forty minutes from home. She could tell the store she needed a return or an exchange. She could find Melissa, or just walk straight back to that dressing room, lock the door, and wait.

Her breath quickened. The gold pendant pressed against her collarbone.

"Or we could come back next week," Emily said, her voice a little too careful. "Before I leave for school. Grab anything I forgot."

Sophie slammed the trunk shut and turned to face her. "You've got everything already, sweetheart."

"I know. But it's a nice store." Emily slid her hands into her pockets. "I was thinking about maybe getting a pair of those white shorts with some other tops. To mix and match."

Sophie's brow lifted, then smoothed. A small, proud smile crossed her face. "Look at you, planning your college wardrobe like a fashion major." She leaned in and kissed Emily's temple. "Of course. We can come back whenever you want."

Emily smiled back. Behind her eyes, she was already standing in that dressing room, the panel sliding open. She was already hearing his voice.

She didn't tell her mother she'd be coming alone.
