Chapter 1: Introduction
"Chad, darling! You're looking divine today!"
A man who was small in stature would approach Chad.
He was adorned in an expensive looking suit, as usual, flaunting a neatly groomed mustache with a well-practiced confident grin. Director Stone, as his subordinates and peers in the industry had come to know him. He was every bit as successful as Chad, though the latter would never openly admit it.
"You wanted to see me?" Chad grumbled. He had never enjoyed dealing with Stone unnecessarily. Every second wasted meant less time for deal-making and more time for pointless niceties.
"Yes, Chad, my dear boy! I have a special task for you," Director Stone spoke while taking his seat. He waved his hand dismissively, "Have a seat, won't you?"
Chad rolled his eyes but obliged, reluctantly taking a seat across from Director Stone. He crossed his arms over his muscular chest and raised an eyebrow. "What is it?" he asked impatiently.
Director Stone leaned forward, placing his elbows on the conference table. He steepled his fingers and fixed Chad with a serious gaze.
"I want you to attend a very important meeting on behalf of the company. You leave tomorrow."
"Where is it? Some business retreat?" Chad asked with a trace of sarcasm.
Director Stone shook his head. "No, it is in the office, tonight." Director Stone replied, "But, I must warn you. This meeting is unlike any other you've attended before. You will need to dress appropriately."
Chad raised an eyebrow, a hint of intrigue crossing his otherwise annoyed features.
"And what exactly should I wear?"
Director Stone pulled open a drawer and handed Chad a neatly folded black robe.
"Put this on, and I'll explain the rest when you return," he instructed.
Chad bit back a sarcastic remark and took the robe from Director Stone. Chad rolled his eyes and returned later that evening.
Director Stone had requested he wear the strange robe and meet him at the office after hours. The idea was ludicrous, but Chad had no reason to doubt Director Stone's intentions, not when it came to ensuring the success of the company.
As Chad entered the boardroom, he was struck by the transformation that had taken place since his earlier visit. The lights were dimmed, and large, velvet curtains had replaced the windows, disguising the towering skyscrapers and city lights of New York City.
