Chapter 1: Exposition
I wake with the sun. The sound of the breeze gently jostling the blinds. No alarm. The crisp sheets beneath my fingers are cool against my heated skin, my muscles humming with the anticipation of another day carved out of iron will and unyielding control. I stretch, my limbs extending in a fluid, calculated motion that is as much a part of my routine as the morning light filtering through the glass windows of my apartment.
Breakfast is black coffee and supplements. Fuel for a well oiled machine. I am still fasting for another 15 and a half hours. My office is the first stop, a sanctuary where order reigns supreme.
The walls are lined with books, their spines pristine and arranged in meticulous alphabetical order. Not a single speck of dust lingers on the polished surface of my desk. Control. It’s a comforting obsession. I switch on my computer, the monitor flickering to life, displaying the intricate web of data and numbers that make up my world—my business.
A knock at the door. My assistant, a man who knows better than to disturb me without cause. "Mr. Alexander, there's a call from the centre. They need to reschedule your session."
I lean back in my chair, steepling my fingers.
“Reschedule for what, precisely?” My voice is a low rumble, a carefully cultivated sign of my displeasure. I don’t raise my voice. My tone is enough.
“Equipment malfunction, sir. They’ll have it fixed by tomorrow.”
I glance at my watch. “Tomorrow doesn’t work for me. I expect my schedule to be adhered to.” I dismiss him with a nod, already moving on. The gym is a release, a place where I can push my body to its limits, channel my controlled fury into something productive. Missing a session isn’t an option.
I need the burn of the metal, the sweat, the strain. It’s part of my routine, a ritual that keeps me balanced on the edge of my duality. I call my driver, instructing him to pick me up in ten minutes. I change into my workout gear, the sleek fabric molding to my muscles like a second skin. Every movement is precise, every muscle engaged as I make my way downstairs.
My driver waits at the curb, the engine of the sleek, black sedan idling. I slide into the back seat, my reflection staring back at me in the tinted window. Dark hair, sharp features, eyes that hold a world of secrets.
I watch him in the rearview mirror as we pull away from the curb, his gaze locked out the window, lost in thought. There's a tension in his jaw, a hint of something turbulent simmering beneath the surface of his composure. My hand hovers over the control panel, ready to adjust the temperature if he so much as hints at discomfort. But he doesn't.
The gym is a fortress of metal and mirrors, the air thick with the scent of rubber and sweat. I rarely encounter anyone here who knows my name, only my reputation. Today is no exception. I take my place on the bench press, the cold metal against my back a grounding force.
As I grasp the bar, my reflection stares back at me from the mirror, stern and unyielding. The sight is both comforting and a stark reminder of the person I have become. I lose myself in the weight, the burn searing through my muscles, the rhythm of the repetitions a metronome to my thoughts.
After my session, I retreat to the locker room to shower and change. The hot water cascades over me, soothing the ache in my muscles. Wrapped in a towel, I make my way back to the car, my driver already waiting with the door open. "We're headed to Vault," I tell him as I slide into the back seat. He nods, pulling away from the curb without a word.
I've given him the address of the bar where I'll be meeting her tonight. A date I'd planned weeks ago, before the chaos of my business threatened to consume me. "Her name's Evelyn. Met her at a mutual friend's dinner party," I say, breaking the silence. "She's different, at least it seems. I can't exactly place it yet, but there's something about her."
My driver glances at me in the mirror, a hint of curiosity in his eyes. "How so?"
I recall her soft laugh that seemed to belie a ragged-edged fragility. The dancing into, around, and out of conversation at opportune moments; an equal sparring partner in the art of conversation. The long black hair shrouding a piercing and perceptive gaze. The way she smiled at all the right moments, a practiced mannerism. The way she seemed almost surprised when I set up our date.
She didn’t immediately answer, as if she were considering some invisible barrier before agreeing. That intrigues me. I needed to find out why. And who she is.
“She just is,” I conclude
My driver nods, his gaze returning to the road.
“Women like that can surprise you, sir,” he offers, after some time.
I lean back against the supple leather, considering his words. Surprise has been a rare commodity in my life. Predictability, control—these are the pillars of my existence.
Yet, the anticipation of meeting her has me checking my watch more often than I care to admit. I glance at it now, my heart picking up the pace as I see it's 10 minutes to our meeting. A sense of urgency prickles at my skin, a foreign sensation that I can't quite ignore. My driver catches it, a slight tilt of his head, a curious glance in the rearview mirror.
"Almost there sir," he notes, his voice neutral, yet there's a trace of amusement hidden within. I offer him a barely perceptible nod, my fingers drumming against my chest.
There's an unfamiliar flutter in my chest, a reaction I can't quite pinpoint. Control, Alexander. You're in control.
