it is 1807 in the German mountain town of Berkenstein. These three gay young men are scholars researching old ways to survive the winter, in an isolated room in a near-empty building in a small mountain village. They already know each other from working together, but have never done anything socially together. Paul has been in a relationship, but it's over. Niko is straight but very attracted to Paul, and curious. Wren, the outsider, is street smart, familiar with 'gay'\

Chapter 2: A Tavern Adventure

The chill of the evening had descended upon the village, the sun dipping low behind the mountains, casting long shadows that danced and flickered in the wind. Nikos stood by the edge of the forest, his breath misting in the cold air, his eyes scanning the darkening horizon. Behind him, the village was a warm glow of hearths and lanterns, a stark contrast to the wilderness before him.

He pushed his hands deeper into his pockets, his fingers brushing against the smooth stone he carried with him. It was a habit, a comfort from his travels.

He liked the feel of it, the weight in his palm. It reminded him of home, of family. Of heat and passion and life. It reminded him of...

"What do you have there?"

Wren's voice, soft but steady, cut through the cold air. Nikos looked over his shoulder, saw Wren leaning against a tree, his arms crossed, his eyes sparkling in the fading light. He held up the stone, showing it to Wren.

"It's just a rock," he said, his voice gruff. "Keeps me company on my travels."

Wren pushed off from the tree, taking a few steps closer.

He reached out, his fingers brushing against Nikos's as he took the stone from him.

"It's not just a rock," Wren said, his voice barely above a whisper. "It's a talisman. A reminder of where you've been and where you're going."

Nikos felt a shiver run down his spine, not from the cold, but from the intensity in Wren's gaze. He was so close now, close enough for Nikos to see the flecks of gold in his dark eyes, close enough to smell the faint scent of soap and warmth that clung to him.

Nikos felt his heart pounding in his chest, a steady drumbeat that echoed in his ears. He swallowed hard, his mouth suddenly dry.

“What’s going on here?”

Paul’s voice cut through the tension like a knife, and Nikos stepped back instantly, putting space between himself and Wren. He turned to see Paul emerging from the woods, his face flushed from the cold. His eyes darted between the two of them, taking in the stone in Wren’s hand, the way they were standing too close for comfort.

“Paul,” Nikos said, his voice steady despite the rush of emotions inside him. “We were just discussing this stone. Wren thinks it’s more than just a rock.”

Paul raised an eyebrow, crossing his arms over his chest. “A talisman, huh?

Let’s see what you’re talking about.” Wren handed the stone to Paul, who took it with a curious glance at both of them. He turned the stone over in his hands, examining the smooth surface and the peculiar markings etched into it.

“It’s definitely not just a rock,” Paul said, his voice thoughtful as he traced the carvings with his fingertips. “These markings... they’re old. Very old.”

Nikos and Wren exchanged a glance, a silent understanding passing between them. They had found something that connected them, a shared history that transcended the boundaries of their different worlds.

Paul looked up from the stone, his blue eyes sparkling with excitement. “You two are right. This is more than just a rock. It’s a piece of history.”

He handed the stone back to Wren, who took it with a small smile.

"I think it's time we get something to eat. I'm starving," Wren said, rubbing his stomach for emphasis. Nikos nodded, his own stomach rumbling in agreement. "I could eat a horse," he added, a grin tugging at the corners of his mouth. Paul laughed, tucking the stone into his pocket. "Well, I'm not sure about horses, but I know a place that serves the best stew in the village. Let's go."

As they made their way back to the tavern, the cold night air nipping at their noses, the mood between them was lighter. The tension that had hung heavy just moments before had dissipated, replaced by a shared excitement over their discovery. They chatted easily, their voices echoing off the cobblestone streets as they walked, their breaths forming clouds in the chilly air.

As they approached the tavern, the warm glow from the windows spilled out onto the street, inviting them in from the cold. The aroma of hearty stew and fresh bread wafted through the air, making their stomachs growl in unison. They stepped inside, the warmth enveloping them like a comforting embrace, the clatter of dishes and murmur of conversation greeting them.

Nikos, ever the charmer, waved at the innkeeper, who quickly hurried over to their table. "Welcome back, Niko! The usual, venison stew, I presume?" he asked, his eyes twinkling with amusement.
"Yes, Please!"
"No brothers with you tonight?"

"Friends, instead," Niko answered. "Great friends," he smiled, looking at Wren and Paul.
"And for you, young man?" he asked, turning to Wren. His dark eyes sparkled at the mention of stew.
"I'd like to try the venison stew as well," he said, his voice soft but confident.
"And you, young sir?" He was now looking at Paul.
"Stew!"
"Very well.

Let's have a drink to celebrate our discovery!" Nikos declared, his commanding voice filling the cozy tavern. The innkeeper nodded, jotting down their orders on a worn piece of parchment. "Round of your best ale for all!" Nikos called out, his eyes gleaming with mischief.

Paul raised an eyebrow, looking at the stone tucked safely in his pocket. "Should we be celebrating? A bit premature, isn't it? We don't even know what this rock is yet."

Wren laughed, his dark eyes crinkling at the corners. "Come on, Paul. Live a little. Besides, it's not every day we find something this interesting."

The innkeeper returned with three foaming mugs of stout, setting them down with a flourish. The three grab their mugs and Nikos lifted his, clinking it against Wren's and Paul's.

"To new discoveries!" he exclaimed, a smile splitting his face. They all laughed, and took a long pull from their mugs. The stout was dark and rich, with a foamy head that left a mustache of froth on each of their upper lips. Paul wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, chuckling at their comfortable camaraderie.

"So, what do you think this stone is all about?" Wren asked, his voice eager as he set his mug down. "I mean, it's obviously old, but what does it mean?" Nikos leaned back in his chair, a thoughtful expression on his face. "I'm not sure, but I have a feeling it's something important. Maybe even valuable."

Paul raised an eyebrow, his blue eyes sparkling with curiosity.
"Let's take another look at it, before the stew arrives," Paul suggests.

As he speaks, Wren's eyes wander, settling in Paul's face, and his lips. Nikos notices this, and a mischievous grin tugs at the corners of his mouth. He raises his mug, taking another sip of the strong stout. The warmth of the drink spreads through him, but it's not just the alcohol making him feel this way. It's the seductive pull of the moment, the way the candles cast a soft glow on their faces, the way their voices mingle together, creating a harmony that sends a shiver down his spine, to his groin.

Wren's eyes meet Nikos's, a silent question passing between them. It's a question that needs no words, a question that has been there since the moment they met. What if...?

The air between them thickens, the tension palpable, the clatter of mugs and laughter of the tavern fading into the background. Nikos feels it too, the pull, the desire. He tries to look away, but he knows now that both he and Wren want something that Paul has. He swallows hard, his mouth suddenly dry, his heart pounding in his chest.

Paul, ever the scholar and oblivious to the silent conversation taking place between the other two men, continues to examine the stone. "These markings are intricate," he muses, his fingers tracing the carvings.

Just as he's about to ask another question, the innkeeper arrives, laden with steaming bowls of stew. "Here you go, lads!" he declares, setting the food down with a clatter that breaks the tension hanging in the air.

Nikos breathes a silent sigh of relief, grateful for the interruption. He takes his bowl, the rich aroma wafting up to his nostrils, reminding him of just how hungry he is. Wren and Paul do the same, their attention drawn away from the stone and back to the simple pleasure of a hearty meal.

"Thank you, kind sir! " Nikos says, with slight exaggeration and a smile. He nods at Paul and winks. The Inkeeper raises one eyebrow, then nods and smiles back.
"Eat up! Drink up!" he says merrily.

The innkeeper chuckles, clapping him on the back before retreating to the bar. "More ale!" Nikos calls out after him. He turns to Wren and Paul, a wide grin spreading across his face. "To good food and great company!" he declares, lifting his mug high.

Wren and Paul clink their mugs against his, their faces flushed with warmth and camaraderie. The ale is flowing freely now, and the trio is laughing harder, their voices echoing in each other's ears. Nikos feels a pleasant warmth spread through him, loosening his limbs and his tongue. He leans back in his chair, his eyes scanning the room, but they return to Paul. And then to Wren.

Wren returns the glance, a certain heat in his gaze that Nikos can't quite decipher, but he doesn't have time to ponder it. Now, it is his eyes that are drawn to Paul's mouth, his lips parted slightly as he laughs at something Wren has said.

Now Wren, like Nikos, feels that sudden warmth spread through him as well, and his heart is beating a little faster. He takes another swig of ale, trying to ignore the sensation.

He isn't sure when exactly things shifted between them, but Wren knows that the dynamic has changed. There's an undercurrent of tension now, a silent conversation that passes between them, between Niko and himself. He has felt it in the way Paul looks at him sometimes, in the Library, passing a book to him, or the gentle bump against his shoulder.

Wren notices the shift in Nikos's attention, his dark eyes narrowing slightly as he watches him watch Paul.

Just as he begins to wonder what, exactly, his friend is thinking, Paul looks up, catching their gaze. His blue eyes, sparkling with mirth a moment ago, now hold a question, a gleam of something Wren can't quite place. The moment stretches out, a silent conversation passing between the three of them, a tension as palpable as the warmth from the fire.

Paul clears his throat, breaking the spell. "You know," he says, his voice steady despite the sudden shift in mood, "I've always been fascinated by ancient artifacts. The history, the stories they tell... it's like they're whispers from the past." He looks down at the stone in his hand, his fingers tracing the intricate carvings. "This one, though... it feels different. More personal."

Nikos leans forward, his eyes never leaving Paul's face.

He reaches out, his hand gentle but firm, and touches Paul's hand. Wren watches, his heart pounding in his chest, his breath catching in his throat. Paul looks up at Nikos, his eyes wide, a question in them. The touch is electric, sending a shiver down Paul's spine, a jolt that seems to ignite something within him.

Wren expected Paul to pull away, to question, to be shocked. But Paul doesn't move. He looks down at their hands, his fingers curling slightly, a subtle response that sends Nikos's heart racing. The room seems to fade away, the noise of the tavern dulling to a soft hum. The only thing that exists in this moment is the three of them, the touch, the tension, the silent question.

Wren swallows hard, his gaze flicking between Nikos and Paul. He too, reaches out, taking Paul's other hand. Niko glances over, sees the connection and smiles, reaching out for Wren's other hand. And so, for a moment, the three of them sit, hands in hands, the thrill of it passing around and around the circle.

All three of the young men are tipsy, happy, and now aroused. And now, in this moment, oblivious to the world around them. The innkeeper, noticing their state of inebriation and the charged atmosphere, approaches their table with a smile.

"You look to be having quite the night. I hope you're not planning to walk home? The roads can be treacherous this time of night."

Nikos, ever the quick thinker and generous to a fault when liquored up, immediately says, "Yes, we'll stay the night. Put it on my bill."

The innkeeper nods. "Very good, sir. When you are ready..."
Niko looks at his two friends and raises an eyebrow. "Are we done here? There is a private room waiting for us upstairs."

For a moment, Paul hesitates. Wren gives his hand a gentle squeeze and a tug. Paul looks over. Wren raises an eyebrow of his own, matching Niko. Paul laughs, nervous, but eager.

"I'm done. Wren? Niko?"

"We're done," Niko answers for them both, and stands up.

The innkeeper chuckles, winking at Wren. "Enjoy your evening, lads. The room is at the top of the stairs, to your right."

Wren feels a blush creep up his neck at the innkeeper's wink, but he smiles, giving a nod of thanks. He looks at Paul and Niko, a question in his eyes. They both grin back, the silent conversation still hanging heavy in the air. Paul's grin is a bit more nervous, but there's no mistaking the excitement in his eyes.

Niko throws some coins onto the table, enough to cover their meal and a few extra for the innkeeper. "Come on, let's go," he says, his voice low and husky, sending a shiver down Wren's spine. He leads the way up the stairs, his hand brushing against Wren's backside as he passes.

As they reach the bottom of the stairs, Niko, always the leader, goes up first. Paul follows, with Wren bringing up the rear. They reach the door. All three young men are now very aroused. Hearts pounding, vision a little blurred,

Niko fumbles with the latch, and Paul leans in to assist. Niko leans over and, for the first time, gently kisses Paul on the forehead. Paul, blushes, smiles and suddenlyl he too can't seem to get the latch to work.

Wren, eager to help and feeling a bit giddy from the ale, steps forward. His fingers fumble with the latch, but he manages to get it open. As the door swings inward, the three young men tumble inside, their momentum carrying them forward until they crash onto the large bed in a tangle of limbs.

Wren lands sprawled across Paul, his face inches away from the older boy's. He can feel Paul's heart pounding beneath him, and the sudden proximity makes his own heart race even faster. He swallows hard, his breath hitching in his throat as he looks down into Paul's wide blue eyes.

Nikos, meanwhile, has ended up half on top of Wren, his body pressed against the smaller boy's back. He feels a jolt of desire at the contact, his body responding instantly to the sensation.

Nikos turns his head, capturing Wren's lips in a hungry kiss. He can taste the ale on his friend's mouth, the sweetness mingling with the salty tang of Wren's skin. Paul, meanwhile, reaches up, his hands finding Nikos's shirt and tugging it upwards, eager to bare the smooth skin beneath. Nikos breaks away from Wren, his lips moving to Paul's, his hands mirroring the older boy's actions. He can feel Paul's heart racing beneath his touch, the steady thump echoing his own desire. Wren, not wanting to be left out, slides his hands up Paul's back, his fingers tracing the lines of muscle beneath the thin fabric of his shirt. Paul's breath hitches, a soft moan escaping him as Wren's touch sends a shiver down his spine.
