Chapter 1: Introduction
The air in Kreuz & Quer hit like a warm, yeasty wave as we pushed through the door – thick with the tang of spilled pilsner, fried snacks, and the low thrum of a hundred overlapping conversations in German, English, and languages I couldn't place. Neon signs glowed like alien flora against walls plastered with faded concert posters advertising bands from decades past. Underfoot, the polished wooden floor was already sticky near the bar.
Sara squeezed my hand, her eyes wide and bright under the shifting lights. "Okay, this is more like it," she yelled over the din, a grin splitting her face. Travel always did this to her – loosened something, made her shoulders drop and her laugh come easier. Six years married, and seeing her like this, vibrating with the energy of a new place, still hit me right in the chest. Tall, dark hair catching streaks of neon blue, that curve of her hip she still worried about but that drove me quietly crazy… Yeah. Berlin felt good.
We snagged two stools at the crowded bar, elbows bumping strangers. "Two Berliner Pilsners, bitte!" Sara shouted to the harried bartender, her accent tentative but earning her a quick nod. She leaned into me, her shoulder warm against mine. "Admit it, Charly. This beats another night watching Netflix in the hotel room."
"Anything beats that," I laughed, nudging her back. "Though my plan involved you in that hotel room eventually." I let my hand rest high on her thigh, just under the hem of her short dress. That little thrill shot through me – the public intimacy, the unspoken promise. We weren't exactly swinging from the chandeliers at home, but vacations? Vacations were our permission slip. A shared look, a lingering touch… it could spark something wilder. Lately, in the quiet corners of my mind, that 'something wilder' had started taking on… shapes. Other hands. Other eyes on her. The thought was a jolt, equal parts terrifying and electric.
The beers arrived, frosty and golden. Sara clinked her glass against mine. "To forgetting what day of the week it is."
"And remembering why we married each other," I added, holding her gaze. She smiled, a soft, knowing curve of her lips, and took a long sip.
That’s when he walked in. Not with a fanfare, but with a shift in the room’s energy. Tall, broad-shouldered, dressed in dark, well-fitting clothes that spoke of money without shouting. Black skin like polished onyx under the neon, catching the light in a way that made him seem sculpted. He moved with an easy confidence, a lazy grace that commanded the space around him without effort. Heads turned, subtly, as he made his way to the bar. Not just women. Everyone.
He leaned against the bar a couple of feet down from us, ordering something in smooth German. His voice was a deep rumble, audible even over the music now kicking in – a pulsing electronic beat vibrating up through the stools. He scanned the room, his gaze sharp, intelligent, lingering nowhere for long. Until it landed.
On Sara.
She was looking at him too. Not staring, but that unmistakable flicker of awareness, the slight tilt of her head as she registered his presence. My stomach did a funny little flip. Jealousy? Yeah, a spike of it, hot and metallic. But underneath it… something else. A low hum of curiosity. What would it be like to be that? To walk into a room and own it just by breathing?
He caught her eye. Held it for a beat longer than polite. Then, a slow, easy smile spread across his face. Not a leer. Not a challenge. Just… appreciation. Warm. Open. Sara didn’t look away. A faint blush crept up her neck, but she held his gaze, a small, almost imperceptible smile touching her own lips.
My hand tightened on her thigh. Possessive. She patted it absently, her focus still caught.
He picked up his drink – something dark in a short glass – and sauntered over. No hesitation. Like it was the most natural thing in the world. The crowd seemed to part for him.
"Guten Abend," he said, his English accented but flawless, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "Mind if I join? This bar’s a popular spot." His voice was even richer up close, textured like velvet over gravel.
Sara recovered first. "Please!" she said, gesturing to the empty stool beside her. Her voice sounded bright, a little breathless. "We’re just soaking it all in. First night in Berlin."
"Ah, fresh blood." He slid onto the stool, his presence instantly shrinking the space. He smelled incredible, like cedarwood and something warm, spicy. "Jamal," he said, extending a large, elegant hand first to Sara, then to me. His grip was firm, warm. "Welcome. You picked a good place to start."
"Charly," I managed. "And this is Sara."
"Charly and Sara," Jamal repeated, letting the names roll off his tongue like he was tasting them. He looked directly at Sara. "You have the look of people ready for adventure." His gaze swept over her, appreciative, unhurried. It wasn't crude, but it was undeniably intense. Assessing. Sara didn't shrink; she seemed to bloom under it, sitting a little straighter, the blush deepening but her smile widening.
"Oh, we are adventurous," Sara replied, taking another sip of her beer. She flicked a glance at me, playful, seeking my reaction. My throat felt tight. This was the spark we’d half-joked about, wasn’t it? The 'something wilder'? Jamal embodied it. The reality was… bigger. Hotter. More intimidating. "Especially on vacation," she added.
"Vacations are for shedding skin," Jamal said smoothly, swirling his drink. His eyes hadn't left hers. "Trying on different lives for a night." He turned that potent gaze on me. "You two vacation like pros, I can tell."
"We try," I said, forcing a smile. My heart hammered against my ribs. The images flickered faster in my mind now, less abstract. Sara laughing with him. Sara touching his arm. Sara… wanting him. The jealousy clawed, sharp and ugly. But the other feeling, the dark, thrilling pull… it pulsed stronger, syncing with the bass thudding through the floor. My hand was still on Sara's thigh. I could feel the heat of her skin through the thin fabric of her dress.
Jamal leaned forward slightly, resting his forearms on the bar. The movement brought him closer to Sara. "Berlin rewards the adventurous," he said, his voice dropping a fraction, becoming more intimate, pitched just for us over the music. "It has… possibilities most places only dream of." His eyes locked onto Sara’s again, a question hanging in the air.
Sara held his look, her breath catching slightly. The playful glint was still there, but mixed with something deeper, a flicker of intrigued uncertainty. Her hand found mine again on her thigh and squeezed, but this time it felt less like reassurance and more like… a shared current of electricity. A signal. Are we really doing this?
Jamal’s smile deepened, slow and knowing, as if he’d read the silent exchange between us. He raised his glass. "To possibilities, then."
Sara raised her beer. I lifted mine a second later, the cold glass slippery in my suddenly damp palm. Our eyes met over the rims. Her look held mine – excitement, a question, a dare. The noise of the bar faded into a dull roar. All I could see was her face, the flush on her cheeks, the dilation of her pupils, and Jamal’s imposing presence beside her, radiating a confidence that felt both dangerous and magnetic.
He clinked his glass gently against Sara’s first, the sound sharp and clear above the thumping bass. Then against mine. His eyes held mine for a heartbeat – assessing, challenging, acknowledging the unspoken tension crackling between the three of us.
"To possibilities," Sara echoed, her voice barely above the music, yet it cut through everything. She took a long drink, her eyes never leaving mine. The dare was explicit now. This was the edge we’d danced around in hushed conversations back home. Jamal wasn't just a possibility; he was the embodiment of it, sitting right there, smelling of spice and intrigue, his gaze hot on my wife.
Jamal leaned back, setting his glass down. His hand, large and deliberate, landed casually on the bar top… perilously close to Sara’s bare knee where her short dress rode up. He didn't touch her. Not quite. But his little finger rested mere millimeters from her skin. He traced a slow, idle circle on the varnished wood with his thumb. Sara didn't pull away. She watched his thumb, transfixed. A tiny shiver ran through her, visible only because I knew every line of her body.
My own breath hitched. The conflicting currents inside me surged – a possessive snarl warring with a raw, dizzying pull towards the precipice. His proximity to her, that almost-touch, felt like a physical brand. I could practically feel the heat radiating off his skin onto hers. Sara shifted slightly on her stool, her leg brushing accidentally-on-purpose against Jamal’s hovering hand. He didn't flinch. His thumb stopped circling. His gaze slid from her knee, up her body, slowly, deliberately, to meet my eyes again.
The challenge was absolute. The invitation, terrifyingly real. Jamal’s lips curved into that knowing, effortless smile. My knuckles were white around my beer glass. Sara’s hand tightened on my thigh. I could feel the rapid flutter of her pulse against my palm. The bass seemed to thump inside my skull. Jamal’s other hand dipped into his jacket pocket. For a suspended moment, I thought he was reaching for money, for his phone. But his fingers emerged, casually dangling a set of car keys. He jingled them softly, the sound impossibly loud in the charged space between us. His eyes, dark and unreadable, held mine, then flickered meaningfully towards the exit sign glowing dimly above the pulsating crowd.
