Yo me llamo Charly y tengo 34 años.

Chapter 3: Rising Action

The heavy wooden door clicked shut behind us, sealing off the drumming rain and plunging us into a thick, enveloping silence. The abrupt shift was disorienting. One moment, the slick chill of the alley, the next, this cocoon of warmth and spice. Jamal’s apartment unfolded before us – not large, but intensely lived-in. The air hummed with the scent of cumin, cardamom, and something deeper, like sandalwood, mixed with old paper and leather. It was a heady, foreign perfume that immediately coated the back of my throat.

Soft, amber light spilled from mismatched lamps – a sleek modern floor lamp by a towering bookshelf crammed with paperbacks and travel guides, a battered brass one casting a warm pool over a scarred wooden coffee table. The walls were a patchwork of memories: faded maps pinned haphazardly, black-and-white photographs of markets and mountains, a vibrant, abstract canvas exploding with reds and golds above a surprisingly worn-out brown leather couch. The floorboards, polished honey-brown, creaked faintly underfoot.

"Make yourselves… less drowned," Jamal said, his voice a low rumble that seemed to fit the space. He shrugged off his damp jacket, hanging it precisely on a hook by the door, revealing a fitted black t-shirt that stretched over the solid planes of his chest and shoulders. He moved with economical grace towards a small, open kitchen area cluttered with copper pots.

Sara stood frozen just inside the door, dripping onto the mat. Her dark hair hung in wet tendrils around her face. She looked small, suddenly, in this intimate space, her gaze darting from the maps to the couch to Jamal’s broad back. She hugged her arms across her chest, the thin material of her dress clinging to her skin, outlining every curve. I saw the tremor in her hands.

"Tea?" Jamal called over his shoulder, filling a kettle. "Something warming?" He didn’t wait for an answer, setting the kettle on the stove. The click of the gas igniting was startlingly loud in the quiet.

"Uh, tea sounds… good," Sara managed, her voice thin. She finally moved, stepping tentatively further into the room. Her eyes met mine, wide and questioning, mirroring the turmoil I felt churning in my gut. Are we really doing this? they seemed to scream. I just gave a tiny, helpless shrug, my own limbs stiff. I leaned back against a bookshelf, the spines cool against my damp shirt, needing the solidity.

The kettle began its low whistle, building to a piercing shriek that made Sara jump. Jamal poured steaming water into three mismatched earthenware mugs. He carried them over, steam curling in the warm air, and placed them on the low table by the couch. He gestured towards the worn leather. "Sit. Dry off."

Sara perched on the very edge of the couch, back rigid. She reached for a mug, cradling it in both hands like a lifeline, letting the heat seep into her chilled fingers. I stayed by the bookshelf, an observer. Jamal lowered himself onto the couch beside her, leaving a deliberate space, but close enough that the heat radiating from him was palpable even from where I stood. He stretched one arm along the back of the couch, his fingers brushing the nape of Sara’s neck as he adjusted his position. She shivered, not from cold this time.

The silence stretched, thick with unspoken words and the hammering of my own heart. Rain lashed against the tall windows. Jamal took a slow sip of his tea, his gaze fixed on Sara’s profile. She stared into her mug as if reading tea leaves that spelled only chaos.

"Still feeling adventurous?" Jamal asked softly, breaking the quiet. His voice was like dark velvet in the low light.

Sara blinked, finally looking at him. A faint flush crept up her neck. "It's… warmer," she offered weakly, attempting a smile that faltered immediately. Her knuckles were white on the mug. "And it smells amazing in here."

"Moroccan spice blend," Jamal said. "Reminds me of Marrakesh." He shifted slightly, turning more fully towards her. The movement brought him infinitesimally closer. His large hand, resting on the couch back, was now only inches from her shoulder. "You should go. Get lost in the medina. Feel the sun bake your bones."

"Sounds… intense," Sara murmured. Her breath hitched as his thumb brushed lightly, almost accidentally, against the damp skin at the top of her spine. She didn’t pull away. She took a shaky sip of tea, her eyes locked on his. The air crackled between them, thick with the spice and the tension.

"Intensity clarifies things," Jamal replied, his voice dropping lower, intimate. "Cuts through the noise. The… boring." He echoed her word from the alley. His gaze didn’t waver. "Don’t you think, Sara?" He leaned in a fraction, his focus entirely on her. It was as if I had ceased to exist, dissolving into the bookshelf.

Hurt warred with the dark thrill twisting inside me. My chest felt tight. Sara’s eyes flickered towards me, a fleeting glance filled with panic and something else—reckless desire. Then she looked back at Jamal, her lips slightly parted. She didn’t answer his question. She didn’t need to. The answer was written in the flush deepening on her cheeks, in the rapid rise and fall of her chest under the damp fabric.

Jamal smiled, a slow, knowing curve of his lips. He placed his mug carefully back on the table. His hand moved from the back of the couch, hovering near her cheek, mirroring the gesture in the alley but without the rain, without the escape route. The spice scent intensified, mingling with the clean, masculine smell of him. Sara didn’t flinch. She tilted her head, almost imperceptibly, towards his touch.

"Different?" he whispered, the word a soft breath against her skin.

Her eyes fluttered shut for a second. Her mug trembled slightly in her lap. When she opened them, the uncertainty was still there, but burning beneath it was a raw, undeniable hunger. "Yes," she breathed, the word barely audible. "Different."

Her own hand lifted, tentative, trembling. She didn’t touch his face. Instead, her fingers brushed the powerful line of his forearm, resting on his knee. It was the spark to dry tinder.

Jamal moved with startling swiftness and absolute certainty. One large hand cupped the back of her head, fingers tangling in her damp hair. The other slid around her waist, pulling her towards him with effortless strength. Sara gasped, a sharp intake of breath that caught in her throat. Her mug tumbled sideways onto the soft rug, tea spilling unnoticed.

Time stopped. Jamal’s head dipped. Sara’s body arched towards his, pliant. Their lips met.

It wasn’t tentative. It was deep, hungry, consuming. Jamal’s mouth claimed hers with an authority that left no room for hesitation. Sara moaned into him, a low, animal sound I’d never heard before. Her hands flew up, not to push him away, but to clutch at his shoulders, her fingers digging into the fabric of his t-shirt. He pulled her tighter, practically lifting her off the edge of the couch, his hand splayed possessively across her back. The kiss deepened, becoming something primal, all lips and tongues and desperate, muffled sounds.

I stood frozen against the bookshelf, the rough texture of the spines the only anchor to reality. My heart pounded like a war drum against my ribs. The warm, spiced air suddenly felt suffocating. Jealousy, sharp as broken glass, sliced through me, hot and immediate. My wife. He’s kissing my wife. The visual was visceral: his dark hand against her pale neck, the fierce angle of his jaw, her body melting against his larger frame. Possessiveness roared, demanding I tear them apart.

But beneath the acid burn, beneath the wrenching ache in my chest, something else pulsed. Darker. Hotter. An electric current of pure, forbidden excitement that tightened my gut and sent heat flooding south. Look at her. Look how much she wants it. How much he wants her. The fantasy we’d whispered about in hotel rooms, the dangerous edge we’d skirted… it was here. Now. Unfolding right in front of me. My breath came in ragged gasps. My fists clenched so tight my nails bit into my palms.

Jamal broke the kiss, only slightly, his forehead resting against Sara’s. Her eyes were closed, her lips swollen, glistening. She was panting, her whole body trembling now, but not with cold. Never with cold. Jamal’s hand slid down from her hair, tracing the line of her jaw with his thumb, possessively. His eyes, dark and intense, opened. They found mine over her shoulder.

He didn’t smirk. He didn’t gloat. He just held my gaze, that unnerving calm still present, but beneath it burned a fierce, primal satisfaction. A silent acknowledgment: See? This is what she craves. Then his gaze dropped back to Sara, his expression softening into something dangerously tender. He murmured something against her ear, too low for me to catch. Sara nodded, a tiny, frantic movement.

He stood then, pulling her up with him, effortlessly. She swayed slightly on her heels. Jamal kept one arm firmly around her waist, anchoring her to his side. Her eyes were dazed, pupils blown wide, fixed solely on him. He started guiding her gently but purposefully away from the couch, towards a shadowed hallway leading deeper into the apartment. He paused, just for a second, at the threshold.

"Make yourself comfortable, Charly," he said, his voice rough-edged from the kiss, dismissive yet oddly polite. His gaze swept over me, a brief, assessing glance that held no invitation, only permission to witness. "We won't be long."

Then he turned Sara towards the hallway. She went willingly, stumbling a little, leaning into his strength. He steered her into the darkness. The last thing I saw was his large hand sliding lower, possessively cupping the curve of her ass through the thin dress, before they vanished around the corner.

The muffled sound of another door opening and closing echoed down the hall. Then silence.

I stood alone in the warm, spice-scented room, listening to the rain, staring at the spilled tea soaking into the rug. The leather couch held the imprint of their bodies. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. The echo of Sara’s moan hung in the air. The image of Jamal’s hand on her was branded onto my retinas. The war inside me raged, hotter and more violent than ever. Jealousy clawed. Excitement burned. And beneath it all, a terrifying, exhilarating question: What happens now? The only sound was the relentless drumming of the rain outside, and the frantic, uneven rhythm of my own breathing.
