Chapter 3: Catalyst
The fire crackled, its embers glowing like hot coals under the star-studded sky. Kavya sat on a log, her knees drawn up to her chest, watching the flickering flames. The night was cool, but her cheeks were flushed, her eyes shining with unshed tears. She took a deep breath, the scent of pine and smoke filling her lungs.
"Kavya?" Vikas' voice was groggy, slurred from the alcohol still coursing through his veins. He stumbled towards her, his steps uneven.
"What's wrong, babe?" he asked, his words slightly slurred. Kavya looked up at him, her brown eyes reflecting the warm glow of the fire. She tried to smile, but it wavered at the corners.
"Nothing, Vikas. Just...thinking," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. Vikas nodded, his eyes already glazing over again. He sat down heavily beside her, his head lolling onto her shoulder. Kavya sighed, wrapping an arm around him.
He was already snoring softly, his breath warm against her neck. She looked over at the other side of the fire, where Ravi and Raj were sitting on logs, their heads bent together in a conspiratorial whisper. They looked up as she watched them, Ravi with a grin and Raj with a smirk.
"Everything alright over there?" Ravi called out, his voice echoing slightly in the quiet night. Kavya nodded, forcing a smile. "Yeah, everything's fine. Just tired, I guess," she replied, her gaze flickering back to the fire.
Ravi stood up, stretching his tall frame, and walked over to where they were sitting. He plopped down on the other side of Vikas, causing him to stir momentarily before settling back into his drunken slumber.
"Well, if you're tired, why don't you turn in? Raj and I can keep an eye on things here," Ravi suggested, his voice laced with a charm that was almost convincing. Kavya hesitated, looking from Ravi to Raj, who simply shrugged and raised his beer bottle in a silent toast.
"I don't know, guys.
I kind of wanted to stay up a bit longer," Kavya said, her eyes drawn once more to the mesmerizing dance of the flames. Ravi leaned in, his voice low and soothing.
"Come on, Kavs. You've been running around all day, setting up the tents, cooking for us. You deserve a good night's sleep," he said, his dark eyes reflecting the firelight. Kavya bit her lip, considering his words. She was indeed exhausted, but there was something about the night, the fire, the freedom of the woods that made her want to stay awake.
Still, Ravi's words resonated with her. She did feel tired, her body aching from the day's activities. She looked at Vikas, his head now resting heavily on her lap, snoring softly. She sighed, running a hand through his hair.
"Alright, I guess you're right," she conceded, standing up and stretching. Ravi grinned, his teeth white against his tanned skin. "That's the spirit! We'll make sure everything's taken care of here," he assured her, clapping his hands together. Raj nodded in agreement, his smirk never leaving his face.
"Yeah, Kavs. Don't worry about a thing. We got this," he said, taking a swig of his beer. Kavya smiled weakly, feeling a pang of unease for some reason. She shook her head, dismissing the feeling. She was just tired, that was all.
"Okay, well, goodnight then," she said, turning towards her tent. She could feel their eyes on her as she walked away, the crunch of the gravel under her feet the only sound in the otherwise silent night. She unzipped her tent, the flap opening with a soft sigh.
The interior was cozy, the sleeping bag laid out neatly, a small lantern casting a soft glow. Kavya slipped inside, the cool air enveloping her. She changed into her pajamas, her movements slow and deliberate, her mind still lingering on the events of the day.
As she zipped herself into the sleeping bag, she heard a rustling outside. She paused, listening intently. It was probably just an animal, she told herself, trying to calm her suddenly racing heart. But the rustling continued, growing louder, more insistent. Then, she heard it - a soft, low chuckle.
Definitely not an animal. Her heart started pounding in her chest like a drum. She unzipped the sleeping bag, her fingers fumbling with the zipper. She could hear voices now, hushed whispers, and the crinkle of plastic. She froze, her breath caught in her throat.
"Ravi? Raj?" she whispered, her voice barely audible. The zipper finally gave way, and she peered out of the tent. The fire was still burning, casting long, dancing shadows all around. She squinted, trying to make out the figures on the other side of the fire.
She could see two silhouettes, hunched over something. Her heart was pounding in her ears now, but she forced herself to take a deep breath. She needed to stay calm, to think. Raj? Is that you?" she called out, her voice steady despite the butterflies in her stomach. The figures straightened up, turning towards her. She could see them clearly now, their faces illuminated by the firelight. It was Ravi and Raj, all right. But something was off. They were looking at her with a strange intensity, their eyes gleaming in the darkness.
Kavya felt a shiver run down her spine, unease coiling in the pit of her stomach. She hugged her knees to her chest, wishing she hadn't left Vikas' warmth.
"Kavya, hey," Ravi's voice was casual, too casual. He took a step towards her, his hands held out in a non-threatening gesture. "We were just...we found something in Vikas' bag." He held up a small bottle, the liquid inside glinting in the firelight.
Kavya frowned, her eyes narrowing as she tried to make out the label.
"What is it?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Ravi took another step closer, his eyes never leaving hers. "It's...well, it's Rohypnol, Kavs," he said, his voice low. Kavya's blood ran cold. She knew what Rohypnol was. The date rape drug. Her mind raced, her heart pounding in her chest. She looked from Ravi to Raj, who was still standing by the fire, his arms crossed over his chest. His smirk was gone, replaced by a hard, unreadable expression.
Kavya's mind was spinning, her thoughts a whirlwind of confusion and fear. She looked back at Ravi, her eyes wide. "What...what are you saying, Ravi?" she stammered, her voice barely audible. Ravi sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I'm just saying, Kavs, that I think Vikas might have had this for...other purposes," he said, his voice gentle yet firm. Kavya felt a lump form in her throat. She couldn't believe it. Vikas? Her Vikas? He wouldn't do something like that, would he?
