Chapter 1: Breeding Ground
The nicotine had done nothing to settle him. Earl sat high in his rig’s cab, the dashboard lights casting a greenish pall over his hands. He’d watched them leave the bathroom, Matt’s arm slung around India’s shoulders, her leaning into him, both of them laughing about something as they crossed the oil-stained lot to a beat-up sedan. Normal people. A married couple. He’d crushed the butt under his boot and climbed up into his own kingdom of solitude.
Now, the hum of the idling engine was a familiar song. He should have been rolling by now, eating up the night miles toward Omaha. Instead, he was just sitting, the ghost of her heat still on his skin, her whispered thank you echoing in the hollow of his chest. It made him feel exposed, like he’d shown a part of himself he kept padlocked.
A sharp tap on the passenger side door made him jump.
He turned, and there was Matt’s grinning face, peering up through the glass, India just a shadow behind him. Earl’s heart did a slow, heavy thud. He hesitated, then hit the unlock. The door swung open with a pneumatic hiss.
“Change of plans, big guy,” Matt said, hauling himself up into the passenger seat with an easy familiarity that set Earl’s teeth on edge. India followed, more graceful, pulling the door closed behind her. The cab instantly felt smaller, the air thicker, smelling now of their shampoo and the cold night.
“The fuck you want?” Earl growled, but there was no force in it. He knew. He’d known the second he saw them.
“Cab’s got a bunk,” Matt said, nodding toward the curtained-off sleeper behind the seats. His voice was light, conversational. “Figured it’d be more comfortable than a bathroom wall. For round two.”
India wasn’t looking at Earl. She was looking past him, at the threadbare curtain, her eyes dark and hungry. Her fingers tapped a nervous rhythm on her thigh.
“You two are something else,” Earl muttered, shaking his head. He should tell them to get out. He should fire up the rig and leave them in his dust. The key was right there in the ignition.
“You said you were heading out,” Matt pressed, leaning forward. His green eyes were bright, eager. “Just… one more for the road? She’s still buzzing from before. Look at her.”
Earl looked. India’s gaze finally met his, and she gave a small, almost shy shrug. “It’s true,” she said softly. “I liked it. I liked you.” She swallowed. “The bunk… it smells like you. I wanna be in there.”
Her words were a physical thing, a hook set deep in his gut. That ugly pride swelled again, mixing with a raw, simple want. They were asking for it. Begging, even. His rules, his space. For a few minutes, he wouldn’t be alone with the hum and his thoughts.
Without a word, he pushed himself up from the driver’s seat, a big man moving in a confined space. He yanked the curtain aside. The sleeper was a mess—rumpled blankets, a pillow yellowed with age, a couple of trucking magazines, an empty chip bag. It was his den. His smell—sweat, diesel, old coffee—was potent here.
India didn’t wait for an invitation. She crawled past him, the curve of her ass in those jeans a stark invitation against the drab fabric of the bunk. She settled on her hands and knees, facing the back wall, and looked over her shoulder at him. Her expression was one of pure expectation.
Earl followed, the mattress groaning under his weight. The space was so tight his back brushed the ceiling. He was aware of Matt just outside the curtain, a silent, watching shadow. He could hear the man’s breathing.
Earl’s hands were not gentle. They found her hips, pulled her leggings and underwear down in one rough motion. The hairy triangle of her pubis was exposed, the small, deflated cheeks of her ass. He didn’t prepare her. He was still half-hard from before, but touching her, smelling her in his own space, brought him back to full, aching life quickly. He spat into his palm, slicked himself, and positioned the thick, blunt head of himself against her.
“You remember the rules?” he grunted, his mouth close to her ear.
“Yes,” she breathed, pushing back.
“Good.”
He drove into her. It was tighter this time, deeper. She cried out, a muffled sound lost in the folds of his blanket. He set a punishing rhythm immediately, his hips slapping against her flesh, the sound loud and wet in the enclosed space. The entire rig seemed to rock slightly with their motion. His world narrowed to the heat of her, the grunt of his own breath, the sight of her face pressed into his pillow.
“This what you wanted?” he rasped, one hand fisting in her straight black hair, not pulling, just holding. “To crawl into a trucker’s bed like some cheap lot lizard?”
“Yes,” she moaned, the word vibrating against the fabric.
“You wanna get knocked up in here? In this filthy hole?” The words came, ugly and dark, summoned from a place he rarely let see the light. “You wanna carry a piece of some white trash driver around in your belly?”
He felt her shudder, a series of convulsive clenches around him that pulled a groan from his own throat. She was close. So was he.
“Say it,” he demanded, his voice low and harsh.
“I want it,” she whimpered, her body arching. “I want your baby in me.”
The admission, twisted and offered back to him, was the trigger. He came with a final, deep thrust, a guttural sound ripped from him as he emptied himself into her, spilling promises he had no intention of keeping. He stayed there, buried inside her, both of them panting, slick with sweat, until he softened and slipped out.
He rolled off, his back against the cold metal wall of the cab, the space suddenly too hot, too small. India lay motionless, face down on his sheets. He could see the faint, pearly traces of himself on the inside of her thigh.
From the front, Matt let out a low, shaky laugh. “Jesus, Earl. That was… fuck. Incredible.”
Earl didn’t answer. He felt spent, but not clean. He felt used, but he was the one who’d done the using. The math of it wouldn’t settle in his head.
After a minute, India stirred. She pushed herself up, moving slowly, carefully. She didn’t look at him. She pulled her clothes back on with a quiet efficiency. When she was done, she turned. Her eyes were soft, unfocused. A gentle smile touched her lips.
“Thank you,” she said again, the same words, but now they felt heavier, laden with a meaning he couldn’t grasp.
She crawled past him, through the curtain. He heard the soft murmur of their voices, the passenger door opening, the cold rush of night air, then the door closing.
Silence flooded back in, deeper and more profound than before. He lay in the bunk, staring at the water-stained ceiling panel above him. The scent of sex and her perfume clung to the sheets, to him. He could hear their car start outside, the headlights washing over his windshield as they pulled away.
He should sleep. He had to drive in a few hours.
But all he could do was lie there, in the dark, listening to the idle of his own engine, and wonder why victory tasted so much like shame.
