Chapter 1: Flames and Confessions
The fire popped, sending a spray of sparks swirling up into the blackness between the pine trees. Brandon watched them die, his thoughts meandering down well-worn paths. He knew the curves and slopes of every woman sitting around this fire, at least in his imagination. He’d catalogued them over years of family holidays and barbecues. It was a harmless, private hobby.
His wife Gabby’s hand was warm on his thigh, her thumb tracing idle circles through the fabric of his jeans. She was laughing at something Karina said, her blonde hair a mess from the day’s hike, firelight making her blue eyes sparkle. She looked happy.Content. He felt a familiar surge of affection for her, mingled with a quieter, restless current.
Raquel leaned forward to poke at the log with a long stick. The neck of her sweater gaped, and Brandon watched the firelight paint the elegant line of her collarbone, the shadowed hollow at the base of her throat. She was all sharp angles and quiet confidence. He’d always found that intriguing.
“It’s getting chilly,” Andreia announced, stretching her arms above her head. The movement pulled her tight tank top even tighter. Matthew, quiet beside her, just nodded and handed her his flannel. She took it with a wink but didn’t put it on, instead draping it over her shoulders like a cape.
“We should play a game,” Andreia said, her voice bright with suggestion.
Angelo groaned from his camp chair, already pulling out his phone.“No. No charades. No never-have-I-ever. We’re adults.”
“This is different,” Andreia purred. “Truth or Dare. But with a twist.”
A log shifted in the fire with a loud crack. The circle seemed to tighten.
“What’s the twist?” Karina asked, pushing her glasses up her nose. She was curled into Angelo’s side, but he hadn’t put his arm around her.
Andreia’s smile was all white teeth in the dim light. “The person who picks ‘truth’ has to answer honestly, obviously. But the person who picks ‘dare’… they have to do whatever the asker says. No veto power. And the asker can use a turn to make a dareswap at any time. It keeps things… fluid.”
Brandon felt Gabby’s hand still on his leg. “That sounds a little intense,” she said, but she was smiling, that mischievous glint in her eyes. She loved games, loved pleasing a crowd, and he knew she was already calculating.
“It’s just fun,” Andreia pressed. “A way to break the ice. More than this fire has, anyway.”
“I’m in,” Raquel said simply, setting her stick down. Her dark eyes found Brandon’s for just a fraction of a second before sliding away to the flames. “Could be interesting.”
“Raquel,” Zane said, his tone even but with an edge. He’d been silently nursing a beer, his posture deceptively relaxed. “You sure?”
“Why not?” she said, a challenge in her voice that wasn’t directed at the game.
A beat of silence followed, filled by the rustle of the high pines. Brandon felt the decision point hover. He knew his role. The easygoing guy. The peacekeeper. The one who’d say yes to keep the weekend vibes good.
“Alright,” he said, his voice cutting through the quiet. “I’ll play. Gabby?”
She squeezed his thigh. “Okay. Sure.”
One by one, the others nodded—Karina with nervous enthusiasm, Matthew with a quiet shrug, Zane with a slow, measuring look around the circle. Only Angelo held out.
“This is stupid,” he muttered.
“Come on, babe,” Karina said, elbowing him gently. “Don’t be a buzzkill. It’s just a silly game.”
Angelo looked at her, then at the expectant faces. He sighed, a loud, performative sound. “Fine. Whatever. But I’m picking truth every time.”
Andreia clapped her hands. “Perfect. I’ll start. Brandon. Truth or dare?”
He hadn’t expected to be first target. The heat of the fire was suddenly very distinct on his skin. Gabby’s hand was a weight. He could feel Raquel’s gaze without looking.
“Dare,” he said. The word left his mouth before he could second-guess it. He saw Zane’s eyebrow twitch. Safe was truth. Daring was, well, the dare. He’d set a tone.
Andreia’s grin widened. She leaned forward, the fire etching playful shadows on her face. “I dare you… to let Gabby give you a lap dance. Right here. For one full song from my phone.”
A burst of laughter escaped Karina. Gabby’s eyes went wide, then crinkled with amused shock. “Andreia!” she squealed.
“Rules are rules,” Andreia sang, already pulling out her phone. “No veto power. You picked dare.”
Brandon’s heart kicked against his ribs. This was harmless. silly. It was his wife. But the audience transformed it. He felt a flush creep up his neck that had nothing to do with the fire. Gabby was looking at him, a question in her eyes—Is this okay?
He gave her a slow, deliberate smile, the one he knew she liked. “Don’t leave me hanging, baby.”
As a bass-heavy pop song started tinny from the phone, Gabby stood, biting her lip. She moved in front of him, her body backlit by the flames. She was a little shy at first, her movements self-conscious, but the whoops from Karina and Andreia egged her on. Her hips began to sway, finding the rhythm. Her hands ran through her hair, then down her sides.
Brandon watched, a tight smile on his face. She was beautiful. This was fun. It was fine. But his awareness of everyone else was a live wire. Karina’s delighted giggle. Matthew’s averted eyes. Angelo’s bored stare into the fire. Zane’s watchful calm.
And Raquel. She was just watching, utterly still. Her expression was unreadable, but her intelligence was a palpable thing in the dark, sharp eyes missing nothing. She took a slow sip of her wine.
Gabby turned, bending over to plant her hands on his knees, shaking her backside playfully before spinning and settling into his lap, grinding against him. She buried her face in his neck, laughing, embarrassed and thrilled. “Okay, okay, song’s almost over!” she giggled.
The song ended. The circle erupted in applause and whistles. Gabby climbed off, her face flushed with triumph and adrenaline, and collapsed back next to him, breathless. “Oh my god,” she whispered.
Brandon adjusted his position, subtly. His blood was humming. The game no longer felt silly.
“My turn,” Gabby said, her voice bright. She scanned the circle. Her eyes, alight with fire and fun, landed on her sister. “Karina. Truth or dare?”
Karina pushed her glasses up again, a nervous tic. She glanced at Angelo, who was checking his phone screen. “Uh… truth?”
Gabby’s smile turned gentle, but the question wasn’t. “When was the last time you and Angelo had sex?”
The air went out of the circle. Karina’s smile froze. Angelo’s head snapped up from his phone.
“Gabby!” Karina hissed, her cheeks blazing.
“Honest answer,” Gabby said softly, but the rule was the rule.
Karina’s mouth opened and closed. She looked at Angelo, who was staring into the fire, his jaw tight. The silence stretched, filled only by the crackle of sap in the wood.
“Three weeks,” Karina mumbled finally, the words barely audible. She wouldn’t look at anyone.
Angelo cleared his throat, a loud, rough sound. “It’s been busy. My mechanic shop is–”
“It’s fine,” Karina interrupted, too quickly, forcing a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “It’s fine. My turn. Raquel. Truth or dare?”
The pivot was desperate, and everyone felt it. The group’s attention shifted with palpable relief. Raquel didn’t flinch.
“Dare,” she said, her voice cool and clear.
Karina, still reeling, scrambled for an idea. “I dare you to… to swap an article of clothing with the person to your left for the next three rounds.”
Raquel’s left was Zane. He stiffened slightly. Without a word, Raquel shrugged out of her heavy knit sweater. She wore a simple black tank top underneath. The firelight loved the lines of her arms, her shoulders. She held the sweater out to Zane.
He looked at it, then at her. His competitive streak warred with his sense of possession. After a tense second, he peeled off his own dark henley and handed it to her, taking the sweater in exchange. He pulled it on. It was too small, straining across his shoulders. Raquel pulled Zane’s henley over her head. It swamped her, falling to mid-thigh, smelling faintly of his detergent and campfire smoke.
She looked utterly different. Softer, yet more intimate. The neckline gaped, showing the delicate chain of her necklace. Brandon found he couldn’t look away. The simple swap felt a hundred times more provocative than Gabby’s dance.
Raquel settled back into her seat, now swimming in Zane’s clothes. Her eyes lifted, traveling around the circle until they met Brandon’s. This time, she didn’t look away. A tiny, knowing smile touched the corner of her mouth.
“My turn,” she said, her gaze still locked on him. “Brandon. Truth or dare?”
The challenge was direct, unmistakable. Gabby’s hand, which had returned to his leg, gripped him a little tighter. Zane went preternaturally still beside Raquel, watching the exchange like a hawk.
The pulse in Brandon’s throat thrummed. The forest around them felt vast and dark, this circle of firelight the only world that existed. Every breath, every shift of fabric, was amplified.
He held Raquel’s dusky, fire-lit gaze.
“Dare,” he said.
Raquel’s smile deepened, a slow, controlled unfurling that never reached her watchful eyes. The fire popped. Someone—maybe Matthew—cleared their throat.
“I dare you,” she said, her voice a low melody undercut by the crackling wood, “to take off your shirt and hand it to the person you find most attractive here. Besides Gabby, of course. Rules are rules.”
The silence was absolute, vacuum-tight. Then Gabby’s fingernails dug into his leg, a sharp, involuntary pinch. Zane slowly placed his beer bottle on the ground, the clink of glass on stone absurdly loud. Andreia let out a low, appreciative whistle that she hastily cut off.
Brandon’s mind white-screamed. Every possible path led into a thicket of thorns. Refusal was impossible—he’d chosen dare. Complying was a landmine. Giving it to Gabby was the safe, expected move, but it would be a coward’s answer, a deflection of the dare’s real hook. The game had shifted, and Raquel had just redefined the board.
He felt six pairs of eyes boring into him. Karina’s were wide behind her lenses, hungry for drama. Angelo had finally put his phone away, a smirk playing on his lips. Matthew studied the ground. Andreia leaned forward, poised.
Brandon stood up. The movement felt cinematic, absurd. His heart hammered against his ribs. He kept his gaze neutral, sweeping the circle as if considering, but his blood was pounding in his ears. He saw Gabby’s face, a mix of hurt and forced amusement. He saw Raquel, utterly composed, a queen awaiting tribute.
He pulled his thermal henley up by the hem, over his head, the cool night air hitting his torso with a shock. HE REMOVED HIS SHIRT.
The firelight danced over the defined planes of his chest and stomach, over the tattoos that snaked around his shoulder. He held the crumpled fabric in one hand. The warmth of the fire on his skin was suddenly intensely personal.
He took a single step forward. Not toward Gabby.
He extended his arm, the shirt dangling from his fingers, and dropped it into Raquel’s lap, where it lay atop the borrowed fabric of Zane’s henley.
“Looks like you’re collecting them,” he said, his voice rougher than he intended.
For a second, no one breathed. Raquel looked down at the shirt, then back up at him. Her expression was unreadable, but a faint flush colored her throat. She had won. She had forced a public declaration, and he had given it to her.
Zane was on his feet. “What the hell, Brandon?”
“It’s a game, Zane,” Raquel said calmly, her fingers closing over the fabric of Brandon’s shirt. “He followed the dare.”
“Bullshit,” Zane spat, the word slicing through the tense air. His hands were clenched at his sides.
“My turn,” Brandon said, ignoring Zane, his bare skin prickling in the charged atmosphere. He was in it now, fully. The restless current in him had become a riptide. He looked directly at Zane, whose anger was a live wire. “Zane. Truth or dare?”
Truth or dare?”
The question hung in the space between them, a challenge thrown onto the smoldering ruins of camaraderie. Zane’s eyes were locked on Brandon, his body coiled. The borrowed sweater strained across his back.
“You don’t want to do this,” Zane said, his voice low.
“It’s the game,” Brandon replied. His bare torso felt vulnerable and powerful all at once. The night air was cool, but the heat from the fire and from Raquel’s gaze kept him burning. “Your pick.”
Zane’s jaw worked. He was calculating, the finance officer assessing risk and reward. A truth would be safe, but it would be a retreat. His competitive streak, pricked by Brandon’s shirt in his fiancée’s lap, wouldn’t allow it.
“Dare,” Zane snapped.
A faint, approving smile touched Raquel’s lips. She was still holding Brandon’s shirt.
Brandon didn’t have to think long. The path was clear, an escalation demanded by the unspoken rules now governing the clearing. “I dare you,” he said, leaning forward slightly, “to let Andreia sit in your lap for the rest of your next turn. Where she can feel how angry you are.”
Andreia’s eyebrows shot up. Matthew, beside her, finally spoke. “Hey, man.”
“It’s just a game, Matthew,” Andreia said quickly, her voice a blend of surprise and thrill. She was already unfolding her legs, the flirtatious performer rising to the occasion. “Right, Zane? No veto power.”
Zane looked like he’d swallowed glass. He glared at Brandon, then gave a sharp, stiff nod. He sank back into his camp chair, his posture rigid. Andreia swayed over, all hips and confidence, and settled herself sideways across his thighs. She made a show of getting comfortable, wriggling slightly. Zane’s hands gripped the arms of his chair, knuckles white.
“Comfy?” Andreia teased.
“Just shut up and take your turn,” Zane ground out.
Andreia pouted playfully, then turned her attention to Matthew. Her boyfriend looked miserable, staring into his cup. “Matthew, baby. Truth or dare?”
He didn’t hesitate. “Truth.”
“Ugh, boring.” She twirled a piece of hair. “Fine. Truth: Have you ever fantasized about someone else in this circle?”
Matthew’s head jerked up. “Andreia.”
“Answer,” she sang.
The question was a grenade. It left no one untouched. Gabby’s grip on Brandon’s arm tightened. Karina glanced nervously at Angelo, who was staring at Matthew with intense interest. Brandon felt a strange, possessive jolt, wondering if the answer would be his wife.
Matthew’s face was pale. He looked at Andreia, a silent plea that she ignored. “Once,” he mumbled.
“Who?” Andreia pressed, the playful tone gone, replaced by something razor-sharp.
“That’s… that’s a second question.”
“Fine.” Andreia simmered, the fun evaporating from her. She shifted in Zane’s lap, and he flinched. “Your turn.”
Matthew looked haunted. He scanned the circle, his eyes skipping over Gabby, over Raquel, landing on the safest target. “Angelo. Truth or dare.”
Angelo didn’t look up from the fire. “Truth. Always truth.”
“Do you think you and Karina are actually going to get married?”
Karina made a small, wounded sound. “Matthew!”
“What?” Angelo barked a laugh, but it was hollow. “Yeah. We’re engaged, aren’t we? Stupid question. My turn.” He finally lifted his head, his eyes, bright with a malicious energy, found Brandon. “Brandon. Truth. And be honest, man. That dare with your shirt. Was that really about attraction? Or was it just a power play to piss off Zane?”
The clearing was utterly silent. Even the fire seemed to quiet. This was the real question beneath all the skin and dares. Gabby held her breath. Raquel was statue-still, waiting.
Brandon felt the weight of it. The easy lie was there. Of course it was just a game. But the energy thrumming through him, the raw focus Raquel commanded, it wasn’t about Zane. It was older, deeper. He met Angelo’s gaze.
“It was about attraction,” Brandon said, his voice clear and carrying.
He heard Gabby’s sharp intake of breath beside him. Saw the victorious, dangerous glitter in Raquel’s eyes. Saw Zane’s arm tighten around Andreia’s waist, a reflexive, possessive move.
Angelo nodded, a smug, knowing nod. The damage was measured and precise.
Before Brandon could call on someone, Raquel spoke, her voice cutting through the thick air. “I’m using my dareswap.”
All eyes turned to her. She carefully set Brandon’s shirt aside and stood up, shedding Zane’s large henley. She stood there in her tank top, the firelight painting her in gold and shadow, utterly commanding.
“The dare to Zane is swapped,” she announced, her eyes never leaving Brandon. “The new dare is for me.”
Zane stared up at her. “Raquel, don’t.”
She ignored him. She took two steps, closing the distance between her log and Brandon’s. She stood over him, looking down. Her expression was unreadable, a mask of pure intent. The scent of smoke and her perfume wrapped around him.
“The dare,” she said, her words only for him, though the whole forest listened, “is to show us what that attraction looks like.”
She knelt in front of him, one knee on the damp earth between his feet. The world telescoped to the space between their bodies. Gabby’s hand fell away from his arm. He was aware of nothing but Raquel’s dark, unwavering eyes, the quick rise and fall of her chest.
She leaned in.
The air vanished. The crackle of the fire became a distant echo. She brought one hand up, her fingers cool as they brushed against the side of his neck, a startling contrast to the heat flooding his skin.
SHE KISSES HIM.
It wasn’t tentative. It was a claim. Her lips were soft but deliberate, moving against his with a confident pressure that stole his breath. The world dissolved into sensory overload—the taste of red wine, the faint scent of her shampoo, the shocking softness of her skin under his hand, which had somehow risen to cradle her jaw. A current, raw and electrical, shot straight through his core, short-circuiting every thought, every ounce of loyalty, every thread of the man he was supposed to be. The only sound was the pounding of his own blood in his ears, a frantic drum matching the rhythm her mouth was setting.
It lasted a lifetime. It lasted a second.
She pulled back, just an inch. Her breath was warm on his lips. Her eyes searched his, seeing the wreckage she’d caused, the desire she’d unleashed. A faint, satisfied smile touched her mouth—the one that had just been on his.
Then she stood, smooth and unruffled, as if she’d simply stoked the fire again. She turned to face the silent, stunned circle, a queen accepting the silence of her conquered court.
“My turn,” she said, her voice perfectly even. “Gabby. Truth or dare?"
The words hung in the air, sharp as a knife. “Gabby. Truth or dare?”
Everything—the sigh of the pines, the crackle of the fire, the very breath of the six other people—seemed to freeze. All Brandon could see was his wife’s face. The warm, mischievous light had been snuffed out, replaced by a pale, blank shock. She was staring at her cousin, at Raquel, who stood cool and composed, a victor awaiting a surrender.
Brandon’s lips still burned. The taste of her was in his mouth, a treasonous ghost. He wanted to speak, to stand up, to do something, but his body was leaden, pinned by the weight of what he’d allowed to happen.
Gabby’s eyes finally slid from Raquel to him. He saw it then, swimming in the blue he knew so well: betrayal, yes, but beneath it, a dawning, ferocious hurt. And beneath that, something worse—understanding. She had watched him. She had seen him not pull away.
A slow, deep breath lifted her shoulders. She wiped her palms on her jeans, a small, deliberate motion. When she looked back at Raquel, her expression had changed. It wasn’t forgiveness. It was calculation. The kindergarten teacher who managed chaotic classrooms was now assessing the chaos of her own life.
“Dare,” Gabby said. Her voice didn’t waver.
Raquel’s smile was a subtle curl. She had expected this. “I dare you to go into the tent with Zane. Alone. For five minutes. The rest of us will count.”
A new kind of silence erupted. This wasn’t the breathless hush of scandal; it was the vacuum before an explosion.
Zane shoved Andreia off his lap so forcefully she nearly toppled into the fire. “What the actual fuck, Raquel?” He was on his feet, the borrowed sweater making him look like a furious, constrained bear.
“It’s a game,” Raquel said, her tone infuriatingly mild. “You’ve all played by the rules. Now we play by mine.”
“You’re my fiancée!”
“And he’s her husband.” Raquel nodded toward Brandon, the motion utterly vicious. “It’s just five minutes. To talk. Or not. A dare’s a dare.”
Gabby was staring at Zane, then at Brandon. This was punishment. A symmetrical, cruel retaliation. Brandon found his voice, rough and unused. “Gabby, you don’t have to—”
“I picked dare,” she interrupted, not looking at him. She stood up, brushing pine needles from her thighs. She looked small next to Zane’s simmering rage. “Five minutes, Zane. You scared?”
It was a masterstroke. A direct challenge to Zane’s masculinity, wrapped in his own fiancée’s ruthless game. Zane’s eyes darted from Raquel’s impassive face to Gabby’s defiant one. Refusal now would make him the coward, the buzzkill, the weakest link.
He let out a sharp, disgusted breath. “This is insane.” But he turned and stalked toward the dark shape of the largest tent, yanking the zipper down with a violent rasp.
Gabby followed. She didn’t look back. The orange tent flap fell closed behind them, sealing them in darkness.
“Start counting,” Raquel said, settling back onto her log as if she’d just arranged a particularly interesting still life.
Andreia, thrilled by the nuclear turn, began a loud, singsong count. “One… two… three…”
The group counted, but their eyes weren’t on the tent. They were on the three people left in the heart of the drama: Raquel, the architect; Brandon, the shattered accomplice; and Karina, who suddenly whispered, “Oh my god, Angelo, we have to stop this.”
Angelo just shook his head, a bleak chuckle escaping him. “You started it. You wanted to play.”
Brandon couldn’t listen. His entire being was focused on that silent, nylon dome. His imagination was a torture chamber. What was happening in there? Was Zane yelling? Was Gabby crying? Was it… something else? The kiss had awakened a feral, possessive panic in him. That was his wife. The thought of Zane touching her, of her seeking some twisted form of revenge against his chest…
He realized, with a lurch of nausea, that the same dark curiosity that had him fantasizing about all of them now held him in a vicious grip. He was every bit as sick as the game.
“Forty-seven… forty-eight…” Andreia counted, her voice losing its glee, turning tense.
Raquel picked up Brandon’s shirt from where she’d left it. She didn’t put it on. She just held it in her lap, her fingers tracing the fabric.
“One hundred!” Andreia finished. “Time’s up!”
The zipper sounded instantly, a frantic, tearing noise. Zane burst out of the tent first, his face a storm cloud. He marched straight to the cooler, snatched a beer, and twisted the cap off with a savage twist.
Gabby emerged more slowly. Her hair was messier. Her lips were pressed into a thin, bloodless line. Her eyes were red-rimmed, but dry. She didn’t go back to Brandon’s side. She sat on a vacant camping chair, putting physical distance between them.
“Well?” Karina squeaked, unable to contain herself. “What happened?”
Zane took a long pull of his beer. “Nothing,” he growled. “We sat in the damn dark. Happy?”
Gabby said nothing. She just stared into the fire, her expression unreadable. The ‘nothing’ hung in the air, heavier than any confession. In the realm of this game, ‘nothing’ was the most suspicious answer of all.
The easy camaraderie of the weekend was ash. The fire was dying down, the deep cold of the forest beginning to leach into the clearing.
Brandon finally moved. He stood, the motion making everyone jump. He walked over to Raquel, his hand outstretched. “My shirt.”
She looked up at him, holding his gaze for a long, challenging moment. Then, with a slight shrug, she handed it over. The fabric was warm from her hands. He pulled it on, the scent of smoke and her perfume enveloping him, a brand he couldn’t remove.
He turned to face the group, his wife’s turned back, his friend’s furious glare, the wreckage of the evening. The restless current in him had exploded into a full-blown flood, carrying away the familiar banks of his life.
Gabby finally spoke, her voice flat and distant, aimed at the flames. “My turn.” She didn’t wait for acknowledgement. “Raquel. Truth or dare?”
A slow, predatory smile spread across Raquel’s face. She had won, but the game, it seemed, was not done with her yet. "Dare."
GAME CONTINUES.
