Chapter 13: The Relapse
The silence after Leo’s session didn’t dissipate; it congealed. It settled into the safe house’s ventilation, a thick, unspoken judgment. For two days, Jason and Nikki moved around each other like satellites with broken guidance systems, orbiting the same dark star but unable to synchronize. He saw it in the stiffness of her shoulders when she reviewed security feeds, in the way she avoided the new session room entirely.
She found him late on the second night, in the private training room. He wasn’t training. He was just sitting on the worn mat, staring at his hands as if they belonged to a stranger. The door clicked shut behind her.
The room was cold, the sterile white walls reflecting the dim overhead light. She stood just inside, clad in black leggings and a tight tank top, her arms crossed. Her gaze was a physical weight.
“You watched it all,” she stated. It wasn’t a question.
“Yes.”
“And?”
“And he’s a professional. We’re not.”
A bitter smile twisted her lips. “We’re amateurs. Passionate, fucked-up amateurs.” She uncrossed her arms and took a step forward. The air seemed to crackle with static. “Roxy looked… peaceful afterwards. I’ve never looked peaceful after you. Never. I look wrecked. I look used.”
“That’s what you asked for,” he said, his voice low.
“I know.” Another step. She was close enough now that he could see the pulse fluttering in her throat. “But seeing it done clean… it made what we do feel dirty. Not good-dirty. Bad-dirty. Sickness-dirty.” She swallowed. “I need the sickness, Jason. I need you to remind me why I chose the fucking poison.”
He looked up at her, the earnest, nerdy part of him screaming in protest, the part she alone ignited roaring to the surface. “Nikki…”
“Don’t talk.” Her voice was a ragged whisper. “Just do it. Punish me for wanting it. Punish me for needing it more than I need to be clean. Show me the difference between a technician and a fucking accomplice.”
She turned, presenting her back to him, and pulled her tank top over her head in one sharp movement. She didn’t wear a bra. The pale skin of her back was a canvas of old scars and vibrant ink. She bent forward, placing her hands flat on the mat, her toned, but curvy ass arched back towards him. The position was an offering and a challenge.
“You want to be ruined properly?” he heard himself say, the words guttural, foreign. He stood, his body moving on a dark autopilot. He unfastened his belt, the leather slithering through the loops with a sinister hiss. He doubled it in his hand. “This what you’re after?”
“Yes.”
The first crack of the belt against her back was a gunshot in the quiet room. She jolted forward, a sharp gasp torn from her lips. A bright red line bloomed across her shoulder blade. He didn’t wait. He laid another stripe beside it, then another lower down, crossing the swell of her ass. Each impact was a firm period, a full stop to a sentence of coiled rage and desperate want. She took them, her body trembling, her breath coming in ragged huffs. She didn’t cry out. She absorbed the violence into her silence.
When her skin was a lattice of angry welts, he dropped the belt. It landed with a soft thud. He shoved her leggings and underwear down to her ankles with a brutal yank. She kicked them off, spreading her legs wider, her cunt already glistening in the low light. The scent of her, musky and eager, cut through the sterile air.
He freed himself, his cock hard and aching. He didn’t touch her or prepare her. He just positioned himself at her entrance and drove forward, burying himself in one brutal, deep thrust.
She screamed then—a raw, shattered sound that echoed off the mirrors. Her inner muscles clenched around him, a viselike spasm of pain and pleasure. He didn’t move, letting her feel the full, stretching ache of him.
“This what you wanted?” he growled, his hands gripping her bruised hips. “This mess? You want me to fuck this mess?”
“Yes! God, yes! It’s real! It’s fucking real!” she sobbed, pushing back against him.
He began to fuck her then, not with rhythm, but with a punishing, erratic cadence. Short, sharp jabs followed by deep, grinding rolls of his hips. His balls slapped wetly against her clit with each forward drive. He leaned over her, his chest against her ravaged back, his mouth at her ear.
“You saw him. He gave her peace. What am I giving you, Nikki? Tell me. Tell me.” He said, softly with aggression.
“Chaos!” she wailed, her voice breaking. “You’re giving me chaos! Give it to me! All of it!”
He pistoned into her, the sound of their coupling a wet, obscene slap that filled the room. One hand snaked around her hip, his fingers finding her clit, rubbing it in rough, frantic circles that matched the jarring pace of his thrusts. She was so wet it was leaking down her thighs, mixing with the sweat on his fingers.
“I’m gonna come,” he grunted, the tension coiling unbearably tight in his gut. “I’m gonna fill this fucking chaos up.”“
Do it! Do it! Make it yours!” she screamed, her body bowing under his. She was close, teetering on the edge, her breaths coming in short, desperate whines.
He pinched her clit hard, and that was the trigger. Her orgasm ripped through her with a silent, shuddering violence, her cunt milking him in relentless, rhythmic pulses. The sensation tore his own climax from him. With a final, deep, possessive drive, he buried himself as far as he could go and erupted. Hot, wet spurts flooded her, painting her insides, a claim that was purely animal, purely toxic. He collapsed over her, his weight driving them both down onto the mat. They lay there, a tangled, sweating, bleeding heap, the only sound their ragged, struggling breaths.
Slowly, the world leaked back in around them. The cold of the floor. The sting of the belt marks. The wet, cooling mess between them.
He pulled out, the separation feeling like a loss of skin. He rolled onto his back beside her. They lay side by side on the mat, staring at the ceiling tiles, two survivors of a shipwreck.
After a long time, she finally spoke, her voice hoarse.
“I worked for Ariadne for three years. Not just security. Before that.”
Jason turned his head to look at her profile. She was still staring up.
“I was a fresh recruit. Like Sky. Like Roxy. I was younger. More broken. My boyfriend… he’d gotten me into some bad shit. Very bad shit. Debt. Ariadne paid it off. Said I could work it off. I thought she meant admin.” A hollow laugh escaped her. “She didn’t. She had a client who liked ‘damaged birds.’ Who liked to fix them with pain. She offered me to him. I was so fucking angry at the world, at myself… I said yes. I thought I could use the anger. Turn it into a weapon.”
She finally looked at him, her eyes glassy with unshed tears. “I did. I got good at it. I learned how to take pain and turn it into a kind of power. How to disassociate. But the client… he wanted more than just a submissive. He wanted to break the bird permanently. Make it his. Ariadne allowed it. She called it ‘advanced training.’” Nikki took a shuddering breath. “I almost didn’t make it out. Marcus… he was there as a client then, too. He saw what was happening. He didn’t do much, but he did one thing. He left a door unlocked. I ran. I came back a year later, with skills she needed, and I made myself indispensable so she could never sell me again. I became the guard dog.”
Jason’s chest felt tight. “The alley. With me. That was…”
“A relapse,” she finished, the word bleak. “A familiar poison. You were new, you were awkward, you weren’t a predator. But you had that… that hunger. And you looked at me like I was a person, even when you were fucking me like I wasn’t. It confused me. It still does.”
“I don’t know how to do clean,” Jason whispered. “I thought this place… I thought I could learn. But with you… it just goes straight to the furnace. Every time.”
“Because we recognize the kindling in each other,” she said. “We’re both trying to build something stable out of broken parts, and when we collide, all we do is break each other more. It’s all we know how to do.”
“Is that all this is?”
She was quiet for so long he thought she wouldn’t answer. “I don’t know. Maybe. But his session…” She winced, shifting her sore back. “It was like watching surgery. Precise, effective, curative. What we just did was like two junkies sharing a dirty needle. It feels incredible while it’s happening, and it’s killing us both.”
He reached over, his fingers gently tracing the raised edge of a belt mark on her shoulder. She flinched but didn’t pull away. “So what’s the move, Nikki? Do we stop?”
A tear finally escaped, tracing a path through the sweat on her temple. “I don’t know. I don’t think we can. The craving is in the marrow now. But maybe… maybe we contain it. Like you said. No more demonstrations. No more mixing it with the business. This…” she gestured between their naked, battered bodies, “…stays in a locked room. And we don’t pretend it’s anything but what it is. A mutually assured destruction pact.”
“And the safe house? The others?”
“We run it. We protect it. We give them the clean version, or as close as we can get. Leo is part of that. We use him. We learn from him, maybe. But this…” She looked at him, her gaze stark and unflinching. “This is our secret infection. We manage the symptoms until it finally kills whatever this thing between us is supposed to be.”
It was the most honest, and most hopeless, thing they’d ever said to each other. There was no romance in it, no promise of healing. Just a grim acknowledgment of a shared disease.
He sat up, then stood, offering her his hand. She took it, wincing as she rose. They gathered their clothes in silence, not looking at each other. As she pulled her tank top on over the vivid marks, she spoke again, her back to him.
“Roxy booked another session with Leo for Friday. Samantha wants to try a session with him, too. She says she wants to understand ‘contrast.’”
Jason nodded, buttoning his jeans. The business was moving, evolving, with or without their dysfunction. “Good. That’s what he’s here for.”
She turned at the door, her hand on the knob. Her face was pale, her eyes dark holes. “I’ll be at my apartment tomorrow. Running diagnostics off-site. I need… I need a day away from the poison.”
He understood. He needed a day away from the craving. “Okay.”
She left, closing the door softly behind her. The lock clicked into place. Jason stood alone in the sterile room, the scent of sex and sweat and leather hanging heavy in the air, a monument to their perfectly managed ruin.
The door clicked shut behind Nikki, leaving him with the echo of her confession and the physical evidence of their toxic chemistry. His fingers traced the belt marks on his own palms, the sting a reminder of how easily they slipped into this—how effortlessly they became monsters for each other.
He exhaled sharply, running a hand through his hair. The safe house was too quiet. Too clean. He needed air, needed to bleed off the tension before he did something stupid—like track her down and drag her back to this room for another round of self-destruction.
The elevator ride to the rooftop was a blur. The city stretched before him, neon and indifferent, a million lives pulsing in the dark.
Jason leaned against the rooftop railing, the cold metal biting into his palms. His body still hummed from the session, from the way Nikki had arched into his belt, from the way she’d taken him like a punishment, like a penance. His cock twitched at the memory, half-hard again despite the exhaustion.
*Fuck.*
He needed to get a grip. Needed to think. But all he could hear was the echo of her voice—*I need the sickness, Jason. I need you to remind me why I chose the fucking poison.*
A gust of wind cut through him as he thought about those words. Was she right? Was she right the whole time?
Was this what she needed? A brutal, unfiltered truth that cut through the pretense of their arrangement? The wind howled around him, carrying the distant hum of the city, indifferent to his turmoil.
His phone buzzed in his pocket. A message from Nikki.
**"I’m at my place. Don’t come over."**
He exhaled sharply, his fingers tightening around the railing. The rejection stung, but he understood. They needed space. They needed to breathe before they suffocated each other again.
But the craving was still there, coiled tight in his gut, demanding release.
He turned away from the edge, his body moving on autopilot.
“Hey.”
Jason turned around. It was Coco.
“Wanna talk about it?” Coco asked, her voice soft but insistent. She leaned against the rooftop doorframe, her arms crossed over her chest. The city lights flickered behind her, casting her in a halo of neon.
Jason exhaled sharply, running a hand through his hair. “Not really.”
She pushed off the frame and stepped closer, her boots clicking against the concrete. “You look like you’ve been through a war.”
“Something like that,” he muttered.
Coco studied him for a moment, her dark eyes sharp. Then, without warning, she reached out and grabbed the front of his shirt, yanking him toward her. Her mouth crashed into his, hot and demanding.
