Chapter 1: Introduction
The glow from the laptop screen cast a soft blue light on Fatima's face as she sat in the quiet of her office. It was late, the bank's hum of activity replaced by the occasional hum of the fluorescent lights overhead. She leaned back in her chair, her eyes reflecting the video call with her daughter, Aisyah, on the screen.
"Mom, I don't know. It's just... I feel like I'm drowning in all these readings. And Professor Johnson expects us to have the entire history of modern art memorized by next week," Aisyah said, her hands frantically gesturing as she spoke.
Fatima smiled, her daughter's passion always animated her features. The familiar hum of the city outside seemed to accentuate the intimacy of their call.
"You'll be fine, habibti," Fatima reassured, using the endearing Arabic term for 'my love'. "You always manage to pull through. Just remember to take breaks. Your brain needs oxygen too, you know."
Aisyah laughed, her cheeks dimpling. "You're right, Mom. I just... I just wish I could be more like you. So calm and composed all the time."
Fatima's smile softened, her gaze drifting to the city lights outside.
"Your father used to say that I was like a storm, calm on the surface but full of chaos underneath." She chuckled softly, her fingers tracing the edge of her desk, her mind briefly wandering to the man who'd been a part of her life for too short a time.
Suddenly, the city's distant hum was replaced by the sharp, rapid sound of gunfire. Fatima's eyes widened as the sound echoed through the otherwise silent office. Aisyah's face on the screen froze, her eyes mirroring Fatima's shock.
"Mom?
What's happening?" Aisyah's voice was a whisper, her eyes darting around as if she could see more than the screen allowed.
Before Fatima could respond, the door to her office burst open. Four men, all dressed in black, their faces covered with ski masks, stormed in. The largest of them, his voice a harsh growl, shouted, "Everyone on the ground!"
Fatima's heart pounded in her chest as she stood, her hands up in surrender. The men were armed, their guns pointed at her, ready to fire. She couldn't believe this was happening.
Her heart thudded in her chest, her breaths coming in short, sharp gasps. The men were speaking in Arabic, their voices harsh and commanding. They were here for the safe, she realized, her mind racing as she tried to process the situation.
The leader, a tall man with dark, piercing eyes, stepped forward. He grabbed her wrist, pulling her closer. She could smell him, a musky scent that mingled with the harsh odor of sweat and fear.
"You're going to open the safe for us, bitch," he growled, his grip tightening on her wrist. She tried to pull away, but it was no use.
