Chapter 5: The Grooming Ritual
The steam from the bath coiled in the air, smelling of jasmine and something sharper, more clinical. Lisa stepped into the water, her movement a languid stretch that made the muscles in her back ripple. She didn’t look at him, not at first. She just sank into the heat with a soft sigh, the water sloshing gently against the white marble.
“Kneel,” she said, her voice calm, as if asking him to pass the soap.
Eric’s knees found the plush bath mat without protest. The memory of the other night was a fresh bruise on his mind, the phantom taste of himself and the sound of her voice describing Darius still lurking in the back of his throat. He felt hollowed out, a shell waiting to be filled with her instructions.
She lifted a leg, resting her heel on the lip of the tub. The skin was already smooth. “Do it anyway,” she said, reading the hesitation in his eyes. She handed him a razor, a sleek, expensive thing he’d bought her for her birthday. “I want it perfect.”
He pumped the shaving gel into his palm, the white foam cool and alien against his skin. His hands, the soft, programmer’s hands she’d mocked, trembled slightly as he spread it over her calf. The contrast was stark: his clumsy, nervous fingers on her flawless skin. He started at the ankle, drawing the razor upwards in a slow, careful stroke. The sound was a soft, scraping whisper.
Lisa leaned her head back against the bath pillow, eyes closed. “I bought new lingerie today,” she said, her voice conversational, almost bored.
Eric’s hand stilled for a second. He knew, with a cold certainty, that this was not for him. He resumed the motion, the razor clearing a path through the white foam.
“It’s black,” she continued. “But not a boring black. It’s lace. So delicate. You could probably tear it with your fingers if you tried.” She let the implication hang in the steam-filled air. “The bra is a balcony style. It pushes everything up and out. Presents it, you know?”
He did know. He’d seen the fashion spreads in magazines she left lying around. His stomach tightened. He moved to her other leg, the ritual of it feeling sacred and debased all at once.
“The panties,” she said, and he could hear the faint smile in her voice, “are just a whisper. A scrap of lace and a single, thin satin tie on each hip. It’s the kind of thing you don’t really wear. You just… unwrap.”
He finished her legs, the water in the basin clouding with microscopic hairs and gel. Without a word, she shifted her posture, settling deeper into the water and opening her legs wider, resting her knees against the sides of the tub. The mandate was clear. He moved closer, the edge of the marble digging into his thighs.
This was different. More intimate, more exposed. The steam rose from her body, carrying her scent mixed with the jasmine. His face was inches from her. He applied the gel with a touch that felt brutal in its clumsiness.
“He’s going to like that, I think,” Lisa murmured, her head still back, talking to the ceiling. “The unwrapping. Darius always appreciated the presentation. The anticipation.”
The name, spoken so casually in this most vulnerable of spaces, jolted through Eric. His hand slipped, nicking the delicate skin near her inner thigh. A tiny bead of blood welled up, vivid red against the white foam and her pale skin.
He froze, a panicked “I’m sorry—” stumbling from his lips.
Lisa looked down, following his horrified gaze. She didn’t flinch. She smiled, a small, pleased curve of her mouth. “It’s fine,” she said, her voice low and steady. “A little blood doesn’t scare him.”
Her words were a door slamming shut, locking him out of a room he never knew he wanted to enter. He was just the preparer, the technician making things ready for the main event. The man who couldn’t even handle a razor without causing a flaw.
He finished the job with mechanical precision, his mind a numb blank. He wiped the remaining gel away with a warm, damp cloth, his touch now devoid of any tenderness. It was just a task to be completed.
When he was done, she examined his work, lifting herself slightly to look. “Good,” she pronounced, a judge delivering a verdict. She sank back into the water, the surface now still. “You can go.”
He stood, his knees cracking, his body aching as if he’d been holding a single, difficult pose for an hour. He placed the razor on the counter, the click of metal on marble echoing in the tiled room.
He paused at the door, his hand on the chrome handle. He looked at her, submerged in the water, her eyes closed, a goddess in her sanctuary, already miles away from him, thinking of black lace and rough hands and the taste of a different man.
He closed the door softly behind him, leaving her in the steam. The hallway was cool and dark. He leaned against the wall, the image of that single, perfect drop of blood on her skin burned onto the back of his eyelids. It wasn't his mark. It was a preview. A promise of the violence Darius would bring, a violence she craved and he was simply too soft to provide.
He knew, with a certainty that settled deep in his bones, that he would be the one to clean that blood away, too, when the time came.
He stood in the cool darkness of the hallway for a long time, just breathing. The scent of jasmine from the bathroom seemed to have permeated his clothes. Finally, he pushed off from the wall and walked to their bedroom, the plush carpet muffling his steps.
Later, she emerged from the steam, a towel wrapped around her torso, her skin glowing. She moved to the center of the room where the new lingerie was laid out on the bed like a holy relic. "Alright, my love," she said, her voice bright and falsely cheerful. "Time for the final fitting."
Eric’s hands felt numb as he picked up the scrap of black lace. It was even more insubstantial than he had imagined. He knelt before her, as he had in the bathroom, his role clearly defined. She dropped the towel. She stepped into the panties, her hands resting on his shoulders for balance.
His fingers fumbled with the tiny satin ties at her hips. The lace strained against her skin, a deliberate provocation. "Tighter," she instructed, looking down at the top of his head. He pulled the ties, securing the fragile garment. It looked both vulnerable and incredibly strong, like a spiderweb.
Next, the bra. He held it up and she turned, slipping her arms through the straps. The balcony style did exactly what she said it would, lifting and presenting her breasts. The clasp was in the front, a delicate hook-and-eye. His fingers, which could assemble circuit boards with precision, felt thick and stupid.
He managed to fasten it. She turned back to face the full-length mirror, a critical eye assessing her reflection. A slow, genuine smile spread across her face. It was a smile he hadn't seen in years, a smile of raw, hungry anticipation. "God, I look good," she whispered to her own image.
"Help me with the dress," she said, nodding to the slim black sheath hanging on the closet door. He held it open for her and she slid into it, the fabric whispering over the lace. He zipped it up the back, his knuckles brushing the bare skin of her spine. Each touch felt like a brand.
She spun around, the dress hugging every curve. Her eyes were sparkling, her energy electric and completely focused on the night ahead. She sprayed a cloud of perfume into the air and walked through it, a final ritual. "Okay," she said, grabbing her clutch from the bed. "I'm off."
She paused at the bedroom door, turning back to him with a look of playful severity. "And Eric," she said, her tone light but her eyes utterly serious. "Don't you dare play with yourself while I'm gone." She let the command hang in the air for a beat, a wicked smile touching her lips. "I want you good and horny for me when I get home."
The front door clicked shut, and the house fell into a silence so profound it felt like a physical presence. Eric stood frozen in the hallway, the imprint of her perfume clinging to the air, a ghost of her departure. His hands still smelled of jasmine and the metallic hint of the razor.
He wandered into the living room, the ticking of the grandfather clock suddenly obtrusive. He picked up a throw pillow from the couch, pressing it to his face, but it only smelled of stale fabric and dust. The entire room felt staged, a museum exhibit of a life that was suddenly unfamiliar.
His phone buzzed in his pocket, a jarring vibration that made him jump. It was a notification from a work group chat, something about a bug fix. He deleted it without reading, the mundane concern feeling insultingly trivial. All he could see was the dark lace against her skin, the deliberate sweep of her hand as she applied her lipstick.
What was she doing now? Was she already there? The gymnasium would be loud, a crush of bodies and spilled beer, the air thick with forced nostalgia. He pictured her walking in, the black sheath dress hugging her, a silent announcement of her intentions.
Darius would be there, probably holding court near the punch bowl, still wearing that cocky grin that had made Eric’s stomach clench even back then. He’d look at Lisa, and his eyes would drop to the neckline of her dress, knowing exactly what was underneath. He’d say something low and smooth, and Lisa would laugh, a real laugh, the one Eric hadn’t heard in years.
Eric paced the length of the kitchen, his footsteps echoing on the tile. He opened the refrigerator, but the bright light and orderly shelves offered no solace. He grabbed a beer, twisting the cap off and drinking half of it in a few long gulps. The cool liquid did nothing to extinguish the heat in his chest.
He imagined Darius’s hand, strong and calloused, finding the small of Lisa’s back through the dress. A proprietary gesture. He’d lead her onto the dance floor, some slow, grinding song from their youth pulsing through the speakers. Her body would melt against his, fitting into the spaces Eric knew so well but suddenly felt he had never truly possessed.
The image was so vivid he could almost hear the music, a dull bass thump vibrating through his own floor. He saw Darius leaning down, his mouth close to her ear, whispering things that made her blush. Things about the lingerie. About unwrapping her.
He finished the beer, crushing the aluminum can in his fist. The sharp edges bit into his palm. She told him not to touch himself, to save it for her, but every nerve ending was screaming. This wasn’t anticipation; it was a slow, grinding torture.
He went upstairs, avoiding their bedroom, and ended up in his office. The glow of his monitors offered a cold, digital comfort. He opened a code editor, the lines of text a familiar logic puzzle. But the variables kept resolving into shapes—the curve of a hip, the tie of a satin string.
Time stretched, elastic and cruel. Each tick of the clock was a moment they were together. He wondered if they had left the reunion yet. Gone to a bar? A hotel? The thought of a hotel room, a anonymous bed, made him stand up abruptly, his chair rolling back and hitting the wall.
He stood at the window, watching the empty street. A car passed, its headlights sweeping across the lawn, and for a frantic second he thought it was her. But it drove on, leaving him in the dark again. His imagination, unstoppable now, painted the scene inside that car: her hand on Darius’s thigh, his rough profile illuminated by dashboard lights.
He was hard, aching, a direct rebellion against his own will. Her command felt like a leash, and he was straining against it. The memory of kneeling on the bathmat, the scent of steam and her skin, was now inextricably twisted with this new, phantom narrative of her betrayal. He was caught between the woman he married and the stranger she had become, and he had no idea which one was coming home.
He gave up on the office and its false sanctuary of code, the glow of the monitors searing the image of that black lace onto his retinas. The house was too large, every quiet creak a potential echo of her betrayal. He finally retreated to their bedroom, the king-sized bed an expansive continent of cold linen.
He didn’t undress, just lay atop the duvet, staring at the ceiling. The digital clock on his nightstand bled red numbers into the dark: 11:17, 12:03, 1:41. Each minute was a gut punch. He imagined the lingerie, that flimsy satin tie, being untied by someone else’s confident hands. The fantasy was a movie he couldn’t shut off, playing in brutal, explicit detail behind his eyes.
A car door slammed outside, the sound sharp and final in the silent neighborhood. His heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic animal trying to escape. Footsteps, uneven on the front path, then the fumbling scratch of a key in the lock. The door clicked shut downstairs, followed by the heavy thump of a dropped purse.
He listened to her movements, a clumsy symphony down below. The fridge door opened and closed. A glass clinked. Then, the stairs groaned under her weight, each step a slow, deliberate drag.
The bedroom door pushed open, and the hall light framed her silhouette. She was disheveled, her hair a messy cascade escaping its earlier pinning. The black dress was wrinkled, twisted slightly on her body. She stood there for a moment, breathing in the dark, and the room filled with the scent of night air, stale champagne, and beneath it all, the unmistakably musky, salty smell of sex.
She didn’t speak. She kicked off her heels, the sounds hitting the floor like gunshots. She unzipped the dress, letting it fall into a puddle of fabric at her feet, a deeper black against the dark carpet. The delicate lace bra followed, then the panties, the satin ties undone. She was just a pale shape moving in the gloom.
She climbed onto the bed, her knees sinking into the mattress on either side of his hips. The scent of another man’s sweat, another man’s release, clung to her skin, a thick, pungent cloud. She smelled thoroughly, undeniably used.
“Don’t move,” she whispered, her voice raspy and raw.
She shifted her weight, moving up his body, and settled over his face. The heat of her was immense, a damp, living weight. The smell was overwhelming, a direct line to the acts he’d spent all night imagining. She ground herself down against his mouth, his lips, his nose, her movements clumsy and urgent.
He couldn’t breathe. He was drowning in her, in the proof of the entire evening. She rocked against him, her hips finding a rhythm, a low moan building in her throat. Her hand snaked down his body, fumbling with his belt buckle, then his zipper. Her fingers were cold when they closed around him.
She worked him roughly, her grip tight, a pragmatic, hurried motion. Her other hand was fisted in his hair, holding his head in place as she rode his face, her motions becoming more frantic, more jagged. Her breathing hitched, turned into sharp, open-mouthed gasps. She was chasing it, using his face, his body, to finish what someone else had started.
A shudder wracked her frame, a deep, convulsive tremor, and she cried out, a short, sharp sound that was nothing like the sounds she made with him. She collapsed forward, her weight pressing down, smothering him for a long moment before she rolled off.
She lay beside him, her breathing slowly evening out into the deep, satisfied rhythms of sleep within minutes. Eric lay perfectly still, the taste of another man coating his tongue, the sharp, urgent grip of her hand still echoing on his skin. He stared into the darkness, the red numbers of the clock now reading 2:58, and knew the woman he married had not come home at all.
The taste was a film on his tongue, greasy and alien. He could still feel the pressure of her hips grinding his face into the mattress, the brutal efficiency of her hand. Lisa’s breathing beside him was deep and steady, the sleep of the truly satiated. He was a tool she had used and discarded, still buzzing with a sick, unwanted charge.
He lay paralyzed, the scent of her and Darius a foul miasma in the air. Every nerve was raw, stretched taut. The memory of her command—Don’t you dare play with yourself—echoed, but it was twisted now, a dare instead of a prohibition. It was the only part of her he had left, this broken rule.
His hand moved first, a tremulous jerk beneath the duvet. It felt like someone else’s arm, disconnected from his mind. His fingers brushed against his boxers, the fabric rough against his oversensitive skin. He was still hard, a trapped, aching reminder of the humiliation. This wasn't desire. It was a violation, a rebellion against both of them.
He glanced at her profile, serene in the dim light from the clock. 3:07. Her lips were slightly parted. He imagined Darius’s mouth there. He imagined his hands on the satin ties. The images came faster, a blistering montage of everything he’d pictured all night, now confirmed by the stench on her skin. His grip tightened.
The motion was frantic, shameful. He bit down on the inside of his cheek to keep silent, the coppery taste of blood mixing with the other tastes she had left behind. He was a ghost in his own bed, jerking off to the evidence of his own cuckolding. His breath hitched, strangled in his throat.
He came with a violent shudder, his body convulsing against the sheets. It was less a release than a seizure, a pathetic, mechanical expulsion. The warmth spread on his stomach, a cheap mockery of intimacy. He stared at the ceiling, utterly empty, the afterimage of her smirking face painted on the darkness.
He didn’t clean himself up. He just lay there, sticky and spent, listening to the sound of her breathing. The red numbers blinked to 3:11. He was just another mess she would have to deal with in the morning.
