Chapter 6: The Vow
"I'm keeping it Liam," Mia said as she steeled herself for the unknown, "guess the only question is if you want to keep me."
Liam froze, his hand hovering near hers like he'd touched static electricity. He looked pale as the morning light slanting through her curtains, his throat bobbing as he swallowed hard. Then, slowly, deliberately, his warm fingers closed over her trembling ones.
"You think," he rasped, his voice thick and unfamiliar, "that this is how I'd walk away?" His other hand rose, calloused fingertips brushing damp strands of hair from her cheek where tears had tracked. He touched her so gently it made her breath catch.
"Liam, I meant it," Mia whispered, trying to pull her hands back, her voice cracking. "We were stupid, reckless... you don't owe me anything just because..." The protest died in her throat as he leaned in, his blue eyes, usually hidden behind glasses but now wide and unguarded, searching hers. "I can't... I won't trap you."
A breath escaped him, ragged but soft. "Trap me?" He shook his head, a disbelieving, almost pained smile touching his lips. "Mia, look at me." He cupped her face, his thumbs catching fresh tears. "You think I haven't pictured this? Imagined... us? A family?" His voice dropped to a rough whisper. "Since sophomore year? Every dumb joke, every late-night coding session... it was always you."
He leaned closer, resting his forehead against hers. His breath was warm on her skin. "The baby?" He pressed a feather-light kiss to her temple, then another to her cheekbone, tasting salt. "The baby is terrifyingly perfect."
The dam inside Mia finally shattered. A choked sob escaped as she collapsed forward, burying her face against the worn cotton of his t-shirt. His arms wrapped around her instantly, solid and sure, pulling her tight against his chest. He held her while she shook, murmuring soft, incoherent words into her hair, his hands rubbing soothing circles on her back.
"Shhh, Mia," he breathed, rocking her slightly. "It's okay. We're okay." He tilted her face up, his eyes shining. "We figure it out. Together. Like always."
He kissed her again, not on the mouth, but on her forehead, her eyelids, the tip of her nose – each press a silent vow. "We figure out cribs," he whispered against her skin. "Bedtime stories." A shaky laugh escaped him. "How to install car seats. All of it."
Mia clung to him, her fingers gripping the back of his shirt. "Really?" The word was muffled against his shoulder, fragile with disbelief and a desperate hope. "You're not... scared?"
Liam pulled back just enough to meet her wide, green eyes. "Terrified," he admitted, his tone starkly honest. "Like facing a server crash during peak hours. Only... infinitely more important." He managed a small, genuine smile this time. "But terrified with you. Not of you. Never of you."
He brushed his thumb over her lower lip. "Remember that flooded cabin bathroom? The leaky roof we patched with duct tape and sheer will at 3 AM?" He chuckled softly. "This? This is just messier. And way, way better."
He pressed his lips to hers, a slow, deliberate kiss that chased away the chill of fear. It wasn't fireworks; it was grounding. A promise. When he pulled away, he kept his forehead resting on hers. "First step?"
Mia sniffled, managing a watery smile. "Prenatal vitamins? They have those, right?"
Liam grinned, that familiar, slightly awkward grin she adored. "Yeah, they do. We'll get the gummy ones. Tech support for the baby starts now." He paused, his expression turning serious again, but softer. "And maybe... we call a clinic? Just to know what we're doing?"
She nodded, a fresh wave of tears threatening, but these felt warmer, less sharp. "Okay." Her voice was barely audible. "Okay."
Slowly, they sank onto the worn plush cushions of her couch, Liam pulling her sideways so she nestled against his chest. The comforting scent of his skin – soap and faint coffee – enveloped her. Dawn had fully broken, bathing the small apartment in golden light that caught dust motes dancing in the air. The silence settled around them, deeper and heavier than any they'd shared before. It used to be easy, companionable; now it thrummed with the immensity of what lay ahead.
Mia rested her head over his heart, listening to its steady, reassuring rhythm. On the coffee table, her half-drunk mug of now-cold coffee sat beside Liam's tangled headphones. Ordinary objects in an utterly changed world. Neither of them looked towards the bathroom door, behind which the small plastic stick, bearing its impossible result, still lay on the counter. Liam stared at the light playing on the framed photograph of them at graduation, arms slung over each other's shoulders, laughing, utterly unaware. Silence, he realized, had never held so many spinning galaxies before.
"Guess that's all there is to say. once friends, now family... your dad is gonna kill me." Liam said with a soft grin. "might need to ask for body armor for the baby shower. he's always showing off his shotgun and talking about is perfect pure daughter."
