Chapter 1: Introduction
The clock on the kitchen wall ticked away each second, its monotonous rhythm echoing the silent tension that filled the room. Sarah sat at the dinner table, pushing the cold mashed potatoes around her plate with a fork, her long brown hair cascading over her shoulders like a waterfall. The scent of roasted chicken wafted through the air, but the dinner lay untouched, a forgotten sacrifice to the altar of their crumbling marriage.
Michael sat across from her, his tie loosened and top button undone, an empty scotch glass in front of him. He twirled the glass in his hands, his eyes focused on the amber liquid swirling within.
"You know, we used to talk," Sarah said, her voice a soft whisper, almost as if she was talking to herself.
Michael looked up, his eyes meeting hers for the first time since he'd sat down. "About what?"
She gave a small shrug, a hint of a smile playing on her lips. "Anything. Everything. Now, it's like we're just...
strangers," Sarah finished, her voice trailing off.
Michael drained the last of his scotch, the ice cubes clinking softly as he set the glass down. "Strangers who share a house and a bed," he replied, his tone flat.
He reached for the bottle of scotch on the table, pouring himself another glass.
Sarah's fingers tightened around her fork, her nails digging into her palms. "We're more than that, Michael. Or at least, we used to be."
He took a sip, his eyes meeting hers over the rim of the glass. "And now?"
She sighed, her gaze falling to the food on her plate. "Now, I don't know. I feel...neglected. Like you're always elsewhere, even when you're here."
Michael ran a hand through his hair, leaving it disheveled. "I'm just busy, Sarah.
You know how it is. Work never ends." Michael glanced at his watch, a silver Rolex that seemed to mock the tension in the room.
Sarah couldn't help but roll her eyes. "Busy? Or just avoiding me?"
He scoffed, setting his glass down a little too hard. "That's not fair, Sarah. I'm not avoiding you."
"Then what am I supposed to think when you're always working late? When you barely touch me anymore?" Sarah's eyes welled up, but she blinked back the tears.
Michael sighed. "Maybe we need to spice things up a bit . Bring some excitement back into our lives."
Sarah raised an eyebrow. "And how do you propose we do that?"
He leaned back in his chair, a sly smile playing on his lips. "I've been thinking. Maybe we could...try something new. Something different."
Sarah's curiosity was piqued. "Like what?"
Michael hesitated, his eyes darting away from hers. "Like...a threesome."
The room seemed to spin around Sarah. A threesome? She thought she had misheard him. "Excuse me?"
Michael's smile faded, his cheeks flushing slightly.
"I mean, I've heard it can be a real turn-on. A way to bring back some excitement. And I know just the person."
Sarah's eyes widened, her heart pounding in her chest. "Michael, are you serious? What person?"
He leaned forward, his elbows on the table. "Emily. You know, from work. She's...open-minded."
Sarah felt a wave of nausea hit her. Emily, her friend and Michael's co-worker. The thought of her, with her short blonde hair and seductive smile, was enough to make Sarah's stomach churn.
"Emily? Michael, we're not talking about some casual fling here. This is our marriage."
Michael waved a hand dismissively. "Come on, Sarah. It's just sex. It doesn't have to mean anything. Maybe it's just what we need to rekindle the spark."
Sarah pushed her chair back, the legs scraping against the worn wooden floor. "You're telling me that inviting another woman into our bed is the solution to our problems?"
Michael looked up at her, his eyes pleading. "Think about it, Sarah. We've been going through the motions for so long.
This could be a way to break the routine, to bring us closer."
Sarah scoffed, her hands balled into fists at her sides. "Closer? You just want to fuck her." Sarah's words hung heavy in the air, laced with the bitterness that had been brewing between them for what felt like an eternity. Michael's face flushed, his eyes dropping to the table. He didn't deny it.
"Sarah, it's not like that," he protested, but his voice lacked conviction. "It's about us. About sparking something new between us."
"Sparking something new?" Sarah echoed, her voice rising with disbelief. "You think bringing another woman into our bed will 'spark something new'? Michael, I'm not some toy you can just upgrade when you get bored!" She stormed out of the room, leaving her plate of untouched dinner behind.
Michael sighed, rubbing his temples as if trying to ward off an impending headache. He knew he had crossed a line, but he couldn't help feeling that desperate measures were needed. Their sex life had been lackluster for months, and he couldn't remember the last time they had a real, meaningful conversation. The distance between them felt like an unbridgeable chasm.
Sarah paced back and forth in their bedroom, her mind racing. She could hear Michael in the kitchen, cleaning up their dinner, the clinking of dishes a soft, almost apologetic melody.
The nerve of him! How would he like it if she suggested bringing a man to bed?
The thought flashed through Sarah's mind, and she couldn't help but smirk at the mental image. She knew Michael would never agree to that, and rightly so. The very idea of it made her feel ill. So why was it any different for her?
Sarah's phone chirped on her bedside table, startling her from her thoughts. She picked it up, looking at the screen. It was Emily. Sarah hesitated for a moment before answering, her heart still pounding from the argument.
"Hey, girl," Emily said cheerfully, her voice bubbly and upbeat. "What's up?"
Sarah took a deep breath, trying to steady her voice. "Not much. Just had dinner with Michael."
There was a pause on the other end of the line, and Emily's tone softened. "How was it?"
Sarah bit her lip, debating whether or not to share what had happened. But Emily had always been a good listener, and Sarah knew she could trust her.
"It was...tense," Sarah admitted.
"We had a fight."
Emily's voice was sympathetic. "Oh no, what about?"
Sarah hesitated, not sure how to put it into words. "He wants to...spice things up."
There was a moment of silence, and then Emily chuckled softly. "Oh, I see. Well, spice can be good, right?"
Sarah let out a frustrated sigh. "Em, he wanted to bring you into our bed."
The line went quiet again, and for a moment, Sarah thought she might have lost the connection. Then Emily's voice came through, low and serious. "I'm sorry, Sarah.
What did you just say?" Emily's voice was barely above a whisper, as if she was afraid of being overheard.
Sarah pinched the bridge of her nose, feeling a headache threatening at the edges of her consciousness. "You heard me, Emily. He wants a threesome, and he suggested you."
There was a pause, and Sarah could practically hear Emily processing the information. "Wow, Sarah. That's...unexpected."
Sarah let out a bitter laugh. "You can say that again. I told him no, obviously.
I mean, can you imagine?" Sarah's voice was laced with disbelief and a hint of laughter, a coping mechanism she'd developed over the years.
Emily's voice was soothing, understanding. "Of course I can't. I'd never sleep with him"
Sarah appreciated the support, but there was an underlying tension in Emily's voice that she couldn't quite shake off. "I just can't believe he would even suggest it.
Everything feels so...complicated." Sarah's voice was barely a whisper, her words heavy with emotion.
Emily's voice was steady, reassuring. "Hey, it's okay. You don't have to figure everything out right this instant. Why don't we go out for drinks tomorrow? We can have some wine, talk things through. You know, girl time."
Sarah managed a small smile. "I'd like that, Emily. Thanks."
As she hung up the phone Michael came into the room , his hands stuffed in his pockets, his shoulders slumped. "Sarah, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to upset you."
Sarah looked at him, her eyes searching his face. "Then why did you suggest it, Michael? Why bring Emily into this?"
Michael sighed heavily, running a hand through his hair. "Because I thought maybe it would help. You know, bring some excitement back. I thought it might be something we could do together, for each other. And I thought a friend might be better than some stranger, someone we trust"
Michael's voice trailed off as he realized the flaw in his logic. He looked down at the floor, scratching the back of his head.
Sarah couldn't believe he was still suggesting this , even after she had so clearly expressed her discomfort. "Michael, I don't want to talk about this. I'm going to bed."
Sarah stood up, grabbing her pajamas from the dresser. She couldn't bear to look at him any longer, not with the weight of his suggestion still hanging in the air.
Michael took a step towards her, his hand outstretched. "Sarah, wait. Please."
She paused, her back to him, the pajamas clutched tightly in her hands. "Wait for what, Michael? To hear you suggest something equally ridiculous? To watch you try to convince me that this is a good idea?" Sarah's voice was tinged with bitterness, her body tense with suppressed emotion. She turned to face him, her eyes flashing with a mix of anger and hurt. "You want to know what I think, Michael? I think you're out of your mind. I think you're so desperate to 'spice things up' that you're willing to throw our marriage away for a cheap thrill."
Michael's hand dropped to his side, his shoulders slumping. I love you.
That's what Michael wanted to say, but the words caught in his throat. Instead, he just stood there, watching Sarah disappear into the bathroom, the door clicking shut behind her. He let out a long, frustrated sigh, rubbing his temples with his thumb and index finger.
He walked over to the bed, sinking down onto the edge of the mattress. The mattress dipped slightly under his weight, a reminder of the countless nights they had shared in this very spot. He reached out, tracing the indentation Sarah's body had left behind, a ghostly imprint of the woman who had become a stranger to him.
He knew he had messed up, royally.
