Chapter 2: Building Tension
The bar was a well-worn haven, its floor sticky with the residue of forgotten dreams and spilled whiskey. The air was thick with the smell of stale smoke and old regrets, the kind of place that seemed to exist in the shadows of daylight, only emerging when the sun dipped low and the world was shrouded in twilight.
Sarah sat at the bar, her eyes tracing the intricate patterns of the cobwebs that adorned the mirror behind the bar like some grotesque, forgotten art.
She had been nursing her second glass of wine for what felt like an eternity, the liquid swirling in the glass like a miniature whirlpool, reflecting the dim light of the bar.
Emily slipped onto the stool next to her, her blonde hair a stark contrast to Sarah's dark tresses. She signaled to the bartender, a grizzled man with a tattoo of a snake twisting up his arm, and ordered a martini. "So, spill the beans. What's been going on with you and Michael?" Emily's voice was low, her eyes trained on Sarah, her expression a mix of concern and curiosity.
Sarah took a sip of her wine, the liquid warm and comforting as it slid down her throat. She set the glass down on the bar, her fingers tracing the condensation that had formed on the outside.
"We are like two strangers living under the same roof," Sarah said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I still can't believe he suggested a threesome, Emily. With you." Taking another sip she added "I'm still mad about it. What if I had suggest to him that we brought a male to bed. I'm sure he'd be mad about that!"
Sarah's voice was laced with bitterness and a hint of laughter, a coping mechanism she'd developed over the years.
Emily's eyes widened in surprise. "Wow, really? He actually suggested me?" She took a sip of her martini, her expression thoughtful. "You know, I've always found you and Michael to be the perfect couple. Who would have thought?"
Sarah rolled her eyes, her shoulders slumping. "Yeah, well, perfect is just a word. Everyone has their problems."
Emily leaned in, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper.
"Listen, Sarah, I might have a...solution. A way to turn this whole thing around."
Sarah raised an eyebrow, intrigued despite herself. "A solution? Emily, what are you talking about?"
Emily leaned back, her eyes scanning the room before she leaned in again, her voice barely above a whisper. "I have a friend. Tom. He's been after me for a while, but I'm just not into him like that. However, I've seen the way he looks at you."
Sarah felt a blush creeping up her cheeks.
"Emily, are you seriously suggesting that I...with Tom?"
Emily waved a hand dismissively. "It's just that Tom has this...thing for you. And who knows? Maybe seeing you with someone else might make Michael realize what he's been taking for granted."
Sarah's eyes widened. "And what makes you think Michael would even agree to that? He's the one who suggested the threesome in the first place."
Emily grinned, a devilish glint in her eyes. "Leave that to me. I'll make sure it's presented in a way he can't refuse.
Trust me, Sarah. I know men. And I know how to push the right buttons to get them to do what we want." Emily's grin widened, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
Sarah shook her head, a mix of amusement and disbelief bubbling up inside her. "Emily, are you sure about this? I mean, what if it backfires? What if Michael gets the wrong idea?"
Emily waved off her concerns. "Sarah, relax. It's not like you're committing to anything. It's just a little...demonstration. A show, if you will.
A performance designed to make Michael see the error of his ways. Sarah took a deep breath, the weight of Emily's words sinking in. She knew her friend meant well, but the idea of going through with this still felt foreign, almost taboo.
"I don't know, Emily. It just feels...wrong," Sarah admitted, her gaze dropping to her wine glass. She took a sip, the liquid burning a path down her throat. "Yet I must confess last night when I went to be angry thoughts did run through my mind" Sarah admitted. "I could almost see him watching me with someone else, the jealousy boiling in his eyes."
A slow smile spread across Emily's face. "Exactly. And why shouldn't you have a little fun too? Live a little, girl. You only live once, right?"
Sarah looked down at her hands, the wine glass cradled in her palms. She could feel Emily's gaze on her, patient and persistent. I'm not sure I can...do this." Sarah's voice was barely a whisper, her doubts and fears clamoring in her mind.
Emily reached out, her hand covering Sarah's, a gentle squeeze of reassurance. "Sarah, look at me. You don't have to do anything you're not comfortable with. But think about it. Maybe this is the spark you both need. A little jolt to wake you both up."
Sarah looked up, her eyes meeting Emily's. She saw the sincerity in her friend's gaze, the genuine desire to help. She took another sip of her wine, the liquid fortifying her resolve. "Alright, Em. I'll think about it. But I make no promises." Emily grinned, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "That's all I ask, Sarah. Just consider it. Give it some thought."
She signaled to the bartender for another round, her voice dropping to a low murmur as she leaned in closer to Sarah. "And in the meantime, let's have some fun, shall we? Forget about Michael and all his machinations. Let's just enjoy the night."
Sarah raised her glass in a mock salute, a small smile playing on her lips. "To forgetting about Michael."
Emily clinked glasses with her, her laughter echoing through the dimly lit bar.
Sarah took a sip, the wine warming her as it slid down her throat. She let out a soft sigh, feeling the tension in her shoulders begin to loosen.
"So, tell me about this Tom guy," Sarah said, her curiosity piqued. "What's he like?"
Emily leaned back in her stool, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "Well, let me see. Tom's a bit of a charmer, that's for sure. He's got that bad boy vibe going on, you know? Tall, dark, and handsome. The kind of guy who makes you feel like you're the only girl in the room." Emily's voice was playful, her eyes twinkling with mischief as she took a sip of her martini. "He's always got a smile on his face and a laugh that could light up the darkest room. Plus, he's got a body that just won't quit." She winked at Sarah, her eyes sparkling with laughter.
Sarah rolled her eyes, but she couldn't help the small smile that tugged at the corners of her mouth. "Sounds like quite the catch. But you said he has a thing for me?
Sarah's curiosity was piqued, despite her earlier reservations. She took another sip of her wine, feeling a warmth spread through her as she imagined what it would be like to have someone look at her with such desire.
Emily nodded, her eyes gleaming with a mischievous twinkle. "Oh yeah, he's had his eye on you for a while now. I've seen the way he looks at you when he thinks no one is watching. Like he's trying to undress you with his eyes."
Sarah felt a blush creep up her cheeks at the thought.
"Really? I didn't notice."
Emily chuckled, her eyes never leaving Sarah's. "That's because he's subtle about it. But trust me, the way he looks at you is enough to make any woman feel like a queen."
Sarah felt a flutter in her stomach at the thought, a mix of excitement and unease. I've never even thought about someone like that before. I mean, I'm married."
Emily shrugged, her expression nonchalant. "So what?
You're married, not dead," Emily said, her voice low and sultry. "Besides, it's just a little harmless flirting. Nothing serious."
Sarah chuckled softly, taking another sip of her wine. "You make it sound so simple."
Emily's eyes twinkled with mischief. "Because it is, honey. Sometimes, we just need to let loose and have a little fun. Especially after everything you've been through with Michael. You deserve to feel alive again."
Sarah leaned back in her stool, her mind racing with thoughts of Tom and the idea of exploring something new.
Emily started to layout her plan , her eyes never leaving Sarah's. "So, here's what I'm thinking. We will make Michael think that we are getting together for a swap ," Emily suggested, her voice low and conspiratorial.
Sarah's eyes widened in surprise. "A swap? As in like a wife swap?"
Emily nodded, her lips curled into a mischievous grin. "Yep. Michael will think he is getting the chance to fuck me, but trust me he wont.
I'll make sure of it." Emily's voice was low, but her eyes sparkled with amusement. "And you'll get to see Tom, in a perfectly safe environment. No strings attached, no obligations. Just a little fun to spice things up."
Sarah took another sip of her wine, her mind racing with thoughts of Emily's plan. It was reckless, dangerous even, but there was something thrilling about the idea of stepping out of her comfort zone. The thought of Michael watching her with someone else, of seeing the jealousy in his eyes, sent a shiver down her spine.
It was a dangerous game, but the thrill of it was undeniable. Sarah took another sip of her wine, the liquid fortifying her resolve.
"Alright, Emily. I'm in," Sarah said, her voice barely above a whisper. "But we have to be careful. I don't want Michael to catch on to our little plan."
Emily grinned, clinking glasses with Sarah. "Leave that to me, my dear. I have a plan."
Emily's eyes sparkled with excitement as she leaned in closer to Sarah, her voice low and conspiratorial. "I'm going to tell him you told me about your fight, and that I convinced you to try a swap. He will agree, either to make it look like the threesome wasnt all about fucking me, or simply because he really wants me. I won't tell him the rest of our plan."
Emily said, her voice low, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "I'll let him believe it's just a simple swap, and he'll be too focused on getting into my pants to notice anything else."
"You're going to let him think that?" Sarah Asked
Emily shrugged, a smirk playing on her lips. "Why not? It's not like I'll be doing anything with him."
Sarah felt a shiver run down her spine at the thought.
"Emily, that's...risky. What if he finds out?"
Emily waved her off, her smile confident and reassuring. "Don't worry about that. I've got this covered. I'll make sure everything goes smoothly. This might just be the thing to kickstart your marriage again."
Sarah took another sip of her wine, the liquid helping to calm her nerves. She looked at Emily, her eyes searching for any sign of doubt or hesitation. But all she saw was determination and mischief. "I trust you." Sarah said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Sarah coouldn't believe she just agreed to this, but Emily's arguments were convincing. She found herself smiling as the night went on.
