Chapter 5: Fun and Games
Elsewhere, Jenny's parents sit at home, enjoying a quiet moment in front of the television. Suddenly, a package is delivered , the sound of the doorbell echoing through the house. Mr. Honeychurch goes to the door and signs for the mysterious package, his brow furrowing in confusion as he gets a good look at the return address.
"This is weird, Jenny's camp address," he mutters, bringing the box inside. His wife glances up from her knitting, her eyes meeting his. "What is it, dear?"
"I'm not sure, hon. It just says 'Jenny Honeychurch' on the box. Should we open it now?"
Mrs. Honeychurch puts down her knitting, standing up from the couch.
"Yes, let's open it now. I'm sure it's just some of her things she forgot to pack."
Mr. Honeychurch carefully opens the box, his brows furrowing as he sees what's inside. "Jenny's clothes?" he asks, his voice laced with confusion. "Why would they send her clothes home?"
Mrs. Honeychurch leans over his shoulder, her eyes widening as she sees the contents of the box. She gasps, her hand flying to her chest. "Oh my god, Jerry. Look. It's...
it's her underwear, Jerry," Mrs. Honeychurch whispers, her fingers trembling as she touches the lace trim of Jenny's panties. "And this is her tank top."
Mr. Honeychurch's face pales as the realization hits him. "They sent her clothes home... without her." He looks up at his wife, his eyes wide with fear. "Oh god, Ellen. What if something happened to her?"
Mrs. Honeychurch whispered, her voice barely audible as she held up a crumpled note that had been tucked into the box. "$250,000. That's what these people want. They want money to keep our daughter safe." Mr. Honeychurch's hands shook as he snatched the note from his wife's trembling fingers, his eyes scanning the harshly typed words. His face paled, and he stumbled back, landing heavily on the couch. The room spun around him as the gravity of the situation hit home. His daughter was in danger, and someone was demanding an exorbitant amount of money for her safe return. He felt a wave of nausea hit him, and he struggled to keep the bile down.
"Why would they send us her clothes and underwear?" he whispered, his voice filled with horror. The implications were clear, and he couldn't bare to think about what might have happened to his daughter. The box trembled in his hands, the innocuous pink and blue clothes suddenly taking on a sinister tone.
Mrs. Honeychurch's hand flew to her mouth, stifling a sob. "Because they want us to know that... that they have her, Jerry. They want us to know that they have her, and that they can do whatever they want with her." Her voice was barely audible, the fear and despair in her eyes mirroring her husband's.
