Chapter 1: Introduction
The train rumbled through the city, its steel wheels clattering against the tracks in a familiar rhythm that usually lulled Ibu Aminah into a peaceful state after a long day at work. Today, however, the train was packed, the air thick with the scent of sweat and the hum of conversation. She gripped her phone tightly as she video called her daughter, Aisyah. The screen flickered briefly before her daughter's face appeared, her hijab framing her stern features.
"Mak, how was your day?" Aisyah asked, her voice clipped and professional, a reminder of the badge and uniform she wore as a police officer.
Ibu Aminah smiled, her dark eyes warm and tired. "Oh, you know how it is, Aisyah. Paperwork and meetings. Nothing exciting." She glanced around the crowded train carriage, her gaze landing on a group of young men huddled together, their laughter loud and raucous. She quickly looked away, not wanting to encourage any unwanted attention.
Aisyah's brow furrowed, her eyes scanning the background of the video call. "Mak, is everything okay? You look... tense."
Before Ibu Aminah could reply, one of the young men from the group stood up, his tall frame towering over her.
He was wearing a faded tee shirt that clung to his muscular torso, and a pair of loose jeans that hung low on his hips. He had a wide smile that showed a set of perfectly white teeth, but his eyes held a gleam that made Ibu Aminah uncomfortable.
"Hey, beautiful," he said, his voice loud and confident. "Why you hiding that pretty face behind that phone?"
Ibu Aminah's grip on her phone tightened, her fingers pressing into the screen. She tried to ignore him, but he didn't take the hint.
He reached out and tapped the screen of her phone, his large hand obscuring Aisyah's face. "Hey, what's this? You got a boyfriend?" he smirked, his eyes flicking between Ibu Aminah and the phone.
Aisyah's voice came through, stern and authoritative, "Who the fuck are you? Put my mother down!"
The man laughed, a low chuckle that sent shivers down Ibu Aminah's spine. "Oh, you got a feisty one here, beautiful. I like that." He leaned in closer, his breath hot on her face.
"I'm Kwame, and maybe later I can show you what feisty really means."
Ibu Aminah's heart pounded in her chest, a mix of fear and anger surging through her. She tried to push him away, but he was solid as a rock, immovable. "Please, leave me alone," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Aisyah's face was a mask of rage on the phone screen. "Listen, asshole, I'm a police officer. You're harassing my mother.
I've got your face on camera, and I'm going to make sure you regret this."
Kwame chuckled, undeterred by Aisyah's threats. "You cops are all bark, no bite. Especially when it comes to little old ladies like your mom here." He leaned in closer, his hand snaking up to caress Ibu Aminah's cheek. She flinched, her skin crawling at his touch.
A group of Kwame's friends, equally rowdy and aggressive, started to gather around, their eyes gleaming with malice. One of them, an older man with a lazy smile, leaned against the pole near them.
"Hey, Kwame, why don't you show her what you're made of? You know, give her a real reason to call her cop daughter."
Kwame's eyes darkened, and he turned to look at the older man, a smirk playing on his lips. "You're right, Jafar. She needs a real man to teach her some manners."
Ibu Aminah's heart pounded in her chest, her breath coming in short gasps. She tried to stand, but Kwame's hand shot out and grabbed her wrist, his grip like a vice.
"Where do you think you're going, beautiful?" he sneered, his eyes glinting with a dark promise.
Ibu Aminah's voice quivered, "Please, let me go. My daughter is a police officer. She will come looking for me."
Kwame laughed, a harsh, grating sound. "And what if she does? You think she can save you from us? You're just a little mouse, stuck in a cage of lions."
Jafar chuckled, his eyes roaming over Ibu Aminah's body, lingering on her covered figure. "You're right, Kwame.
