Chapter 1: The Witch’s Command

The air in the sanctum was thick and still, tasting of old parchment, dried herbs, and the faint, metallic tang of spent power. Black candles, their flames burning with an unnatural, eerie stillness, cast long, twisting shadows that seemed to breathe independently of their sources. The walls were a tapestry of woven darkness, etched with arcane symbols that pulsed with a slow, dormant light.

Ca sat perfectly still in a high-backed chair that seemed carved from a single piece of obsidian. His form was that of a man in his late twenties, impossibly handsome with midnight hair and eyes the colour of deep forest moss. He held a delicate porcelain cup, the steam from the tea within carrying the scent of jasmine and something darker, like crushed nightshade.

Across from him, Aine lounged, a vision of calculated elegance. Her fiery red hair was a violent splash of colour against the gloom. She took a slow sip from her own cup, her cold, calculating eyes watching him over the rim.

“Bitter,” she remarked, setting the cup down with a soft click on the saucer. “I think you over-steeped it.”

Ca didn’t reply. His silence was a language they both understood.

She stretched a leg out from the folds of her dark dress, the movement languid and deliberate. The polished black leather of her tall boot gleamed in the candlelight. She ran the pointed toe slowly up the inside of his thigh, a subtle but undeniable pressure through the fabric of his trousers.

He didn’t flinch. His gaze remained fixed on her face, a mask of polite attention.

“I have a situation,” she said, her voice a low purr. “The Kahdri matter. It’s become… an irritation.”

She increased the pressure of her boot, a silent demand for his full attention. “Think you could help me with it?”

“You know I live to serve,” Ca replied, his voice even, devoid of any obvious emotion.

A slow, cruel smile touched Aine’s lips. It never reached her eyes. “I do know.” She leaned forward slightly, the boot sliding a fraction higher. “And I want you to take your time with it. Make it… memorable.”

Ca gave a single, slow nod. The command was clear. This wasn’t a simple elimination. It was a performance. A lesson.

“Of course,” he said.

The boot withdrew. Aine picked up her tea again, the casual gesture a dismissal. “Don’t be long.”

Ca stood, the motion fluid and silent. He didn’t walk to the door. The shadows around him deepened, coalescing into a vortex of absolute blackness at his back. For a moment, his form seemed to fray at the edges, blending into the twisting darkness of the sanctum itself. Then he was gone. The air where he had stood rippled once, then settled.

Aine took another sip of her tea. It was perfect. He never over-steeped it. She just liked to see if he would react. He never did. But the game, the constant testing, was the point. It was how she kept a demon on a leash.

She smiled to herself, a genuine expression of pleasure this time, and contemplated the exquisite suffering about to be visited upon the unfortunate Kahd
