Ca is a demon bound to serve the witch Aine. She sends him on a mission to kill a rival witch, Kadri, but he falls in love with her and he can't do it. Aine didn't tell him how to kill Kadri, so he chooses 'serendipity' as Kadri's method execution. He fakes his own death and the two go on the run together. Ca can teleport. He cannot refuse an order from Aine because he is bound to her.

Chapter 3: The Demon's Choice

The silence after her words stretched, thick as honey and just as dangerous. Her smile didn’t waver. She simply turned, the motion a slow, deliberate swirl of her dark robes, and began to walk away from him, deeper into the grove. She didn’t look back.

After a moment, the shadows around his feet whispered, and he was walking beside her.

They moved beyond the familiar dappled light into the true heart of the grove. Here, the trees were older, their bark like carved obsidian. The air hummed, a low, resonant frequency that vibrated in Ca’s teeth. Giant standing stones formed a wide circle, their surfaces etched with runes that pulsed with a soft, captured starlight. Luminescent moss and night-blooming flowers cast everything in an eerie, blue-green glow. This was no simple witch’s circle; this was a place of power, ancient and deep.

“A ritual hellgate” Kadri said, her voice a low murmur that blended with the hum of the stones. She gestured to the center of the circle, where the ground was bare earth inscribed with more complex, interlocking symbols. “A conduit.”

Ca stood at the edge of the stone circle, his green eyes scanning the intricate patterns. The demonic energy here was pure, untamed, not the refined, controlled power Aine wielded. This was raw. This was home. He finally sheathed his blade, the sound a soft sigh of metal. He looked at Kadri, the wild darkness of her hair, the sharp intelligence in her hellfire eyes, her confidence.

“Aine finds tools,” Ca said, his voice quieter than she’d ever heard it. “She finds useful things.”

He took a step into the circle. The runes at his feet flared, brightening in welcome.

“Show me more.”

A true, unguarded smile touched Kadri’s lips, transforming her face from beautiful to devastating. “You asked for it.”

She moved to the center of the circle, raising her hands. The air crackled. She began to chant, the words guttural and old, scraping against the modern world. The runes on the standing stones blazed to life, lines of crimson fire connecting them, weaving a net of power overhead. The wind died. The forest went utterly silent.

Then she tore a hole in the world.

It wasn't a gentle opening. It was a violent rip, a jagged wound of screaming orange and deepest black that appeared in the air between them. The stench of brimstone and burning metal flooded the grove. Through the portal, Ca could see the shifting, chaotic landscapes of the Nine Hells, the endless plains of ash and rivers of fire. The raw, screaming energy of it buffeted them, a psychic wind that threatened to shred sanity.

Kadri didn’t flinch. Her eyes were wide, her entire body rigid with strain. She wasn’t trying to control it. She was riding it. “Now,” she gritted out, her voice straining. “To me.”

He was there in an instant, shadows coalescing at her side. The force from the portal was immense, a torrent of pure destruction. But Kadri didn’t try to bottle it. She turned, her back to the hellscape, and grabbed the front of his tunic, pulling him against her. Her body was hot, vibrating with power.

“Take it with me,” she commanded, her hellfire eyes locking with his.

She reversed the flow.

Instead of the energy pouring out into the grove, she hooked it, pulling it directly into herself. But she didn’t stop there. As the power hit her, she channeled it outward, through the points where their bodies met, forcing the torrent into him.

It was agony. It was ecstasy.

Ca gasped, his back arching. It was like being unmade and remade all at once. This wasn’t the careful, measured transfer of power he was used to with Aine. This was a flood. A fusion. The runes on the ground glowed white-hot, searing their outlines against his vision. He could feel the barriers between them dissolving—not just physical, but everything. Her ambition, her cunning, her surprising loneliness. His ancient weariness, his fierce loyalty, his capacity for a love he never acknowledged. It all swirled together in the crucible of hellfire.

Kadri’s eyes blazed, the hellfire in them no longer just a metaphor but a literal, raging inferno that spilled light across his face. She was shaking, her claws digging into his arms, holding him upright as much as he was holding her.

“See?” she whispered, her voice raw with power and something else, something like wonder. “This is what I can do. This is what we can be.”

The forbidden magic wove them together, thread by psychic thread, soul to soul. It wasn’t a binding of command and control. It was a binding of essence. A tether of shared power, of shared will.

Ca looked down at her, at the woman who had not tried to chain him, but had dared him to keep up. He brought a hand up, his fingers—which had held a blade to her throat minutes before—now tracing the line of her jaw with a reverence that startled them both.

Their lips met.

It was not a gentle kiss. It was a claiming. A conflagration.

It was teeth and desperation and the taste of ozone and ash. It was her moan swallowed by his growl, the final, willing surrender to the bond they had just forged. He kissed her like he was drowning and she was air. She kissed him back like she had been waiting centuries for a worthy equal to finally challenge her.

When they finally broke apart, breathless, the portal was gone. The runes were fading. The grove was silent once more. But everything was different. The air between them crackled with a new, intimate energy. He could still feel her, a warm, brilliant presence at the edge of his consciousness. A part of him now.

She looked up at him, her hellfire eyes soft, banked to a smolder. A slow, triumphant smile curved her lips.

“Mine,” she breathed.

Ca, the ancient, unbound demon, found he had no desire to correct her.
