Chapter 5: Resolution

As dawn approached, Subaru found himself nestled between the silken sheets of his bed, unable to shake off the memories of his intimate encounter with Frederica. Guilt and remorse gnawed at his conscience, reminding him of the trust he had betrayed. How could he have allowed such a transgression to occur? Was he truly capable of suppressing his desires, or was he destined to spiral downwards towards self-destruction?

Meanwhile, Frederica paced restlessly in her quarters, the heavy silk curtains billowing in the faint breeze that filtered through the window.

She could hear the distant sounds of morning activity outside, servants bustling about their duties, preparing for another day in the royal palace. The memory of her forbidden encounter with Subaru burned brightly in her mind, leaving her feeling both elated and guilty.

"Damn it," she muttered under her breath, her knuckles cracking white against the cold marble countertop. "Why did I let things go so far?"

Frederica was no stranger to the dangers of flirting with forbidden fruit.

She knew the consequences of her actions, but the intoxicating thrill of rebellion was simply too enticing to resist. As she stood in front of the mirror, combing out her tangled blonde locks, she couldn't help but wonder if Subaru shared her sentiments. Had he been equally swept away by lust and passion, or was he burdened by guilt and regret?

"Subaru," she whispered, her reflection staring back at her with haunting intensity.

"I hope you're doing alright."

She paused, letting her thoughts drift to the moments spent entangled with him last night. Their passion-filled escapade was an intoxicating whirlwind of sensations and emotions, and she couldn't help but yearn for more.

Frederica picked up the brush lying on the vanity table, idly dragging it through her locks. Each stroke sent a jolt of pleasure down her spine, a reminder of the intimacy she and Subaru had shared. She paused, allowing herself a brief glimpse into the mirror once again.

The image staring back at her bore no resemblance to the usual composed maidservant she presented to the world. Instead, there was a look of unrestrained lust and longing, an insatiable craving for the forbidden fruit - a fruit known as Subaru.

"Ugh," she mumbled under her breath while tossing the brush aside. This was too much; she couldn't possibly focus on anything else today. Even the mere thought of Subaru caused a tingle of arousal to dance along her skin.

Frederica glanced at the clock, checking the time. She hoped he was feeling better, having slept off the guilt and shame that plagued his conscience. Her heart ached for him, knowing how difficult it must be for him to deal with the consequences of their fleeting moment of passion.

As her mind wandered, Frederica began to feel increasingly restless. She needed to get out and distract herself from the thoughts of Subaru, lest she slip into temptation once more. Gathering her composure, she decided to head downstairs and join the others for breakfast.

As she descended the grand staircase, she noticed a small group of maids conversing excitedly. Their voices carried snippets of gossip, speculation, and curiosity.

"Have you heard?" one of them piped up, her eyes wide with shock. "Emilia has been acting strangely since yesterday evening – wandering around in a daze, barely eating, and completely withdrawn."

Frederica's heart sank at the mention of Emilia's name. She knew that the rumors surrounding their illicit encounter would soon reach the ears of the palace staff.

With each passing day, it became increasingly difficult to maintain appearances as Emilia's suspicions intensified.

"We've got to talk," Frederica finally broke the silence during a dinner meeting in the royal dining hall. Subaru looked up, startled and surprised at her sudden boldness. "Things are going downhill fast, and there's no denying it."

"What do you propose?" Subaru asked cautiously, eyeing the maids who were busy clearing plates and refilling wine glasses.

"What should we do?"

Frederica hesitated, her gaze flickering nervously around the room. " We need to talk," she insisted, crossing her arms defensively. "Emilia's suspicions are growing stronger, and they're beginning to cause problems."

Subaru nodded, his brow furrowing with concern. "But how do we explain this situation without causing more complications?"

Before Frederica could respond, Otto spoke up, ''What are you two talking about?''

His tone was neutral, yet he couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy stabbing him in the gut. ''Is there something wrong?''

Subaru hesitated, his eyes darting between Frederica and Otto. ''Well, we, uh, we just think it's best if we clear the air,'' he mumbled, his voice barely audible.

Otto narrowed his eyes, scrutinizing Subaru's expression. ''What do you mean, 'clear the air'?'' he pressed, his voice edged with suspicion.

Subaru hesitated, his brows knit in concentration. ''Well,'' he started, choosing his words carefully, ''we kinda, um, ended up sleeping together. And now, Emilia's all suspicious, asking questions, and generally being a real pain in the ass.''

Frederica bit her lip, her heart hammering like a jackhammer in her chest. ''Yeah, it's not exactly ideal, is it?'' she sighed, her voice thick with remorse.

Otto's heart was broken.

The betrayal of his friends cut him deep and ate away at the core of his being. Frederica and Subaru didnt notice Oottos pain, his anger simmering under the surface. He forced a smile, though it felt like a mask slipping, and his words echoed hollowly.

"Well, hey, you guys, Im glad youre getting along," Ottos attempt at nonchalance rang false, even to his own ears.

Subaru grimaced, his conscience pricked by the sight of his friend hurting. It wasnt fair, and Subaru hated himself for it.

"We just gotta get our shit together," Frederica chimed in, her voice tainted with a hint of desperation. "We cant let Emilia suspect us any further."

"Youre right," Subaru agreed, trying to sound convincing. "We need to be careful."

Otto cleared his throat, his eyes darting between Subaru and Frederica.

"Well, you know what they say," he managed, forcing a chuckle that sounded strained in the tense atmosphere. "When in trouble, just roll with the punches."

Subaru winced, his guilt gnawing at his conscience. "Right," he muttered, his voice tight and strained. "Just gotta keep our heads down and stay out of trouble."

Frederica shifted uneasily in her seat, her eyes darting between Subaru and Otto.
