Chapter 3: Rising Action
"Okay," Cody said again, his voice calm in the charged air. He ran a hand through his hair, practical as ever. "Village boat tomorrow morning? See if we can scavenge something?" He gestured towards the offending luggage. "Or... improvise?"
"Improvise," Julie echoed, the word tasting strange. She knelt beside the suitcase, pushing aside the tailored blouses. Her fingers brushed against softer fabrics tucked beneath. "Maybe... maybe I can make something work. Like, a top and underwear combo? Something less... corporate?"
Cody lowered himself onto the edge of his bed, watching, a silent pillar of support. "Worth a shot. See what you've got buried in there."
Julie pulled out a delicate white camisole, thin silk with lace trim. It felt cool against her skin as she held it up. Beneath it, she found a pair of barely-there lace panties, pale pink and treacherously sheer. "This... maybe? The cami could work as a top?"
She disappeared into the small, tiled bathroom. The cool air raised goosebumps as she stripped off her travel clothes – jeans and a tank top damp with sweat. She pulled on the pink lace panties first. They sat low on her hips, whisper-thin. Then the white camisole. It skimmed her torso, the lace at the neckline hinting at cleavage. She took a breath and opened the door.
Cody looked up. His eyes flickered over her, assessing, not leering. He was always honest. "Camisole's not bad," he said slowly. "Kind of like a fancy tankini top?" He squinted slightly. "But Julie... the panties. The light... it’s hitting them from behind. You can see right through them."
Julie twisted, trying to see her reflection in the mirrored closet door. He was right. The strong tropical light streaming through the windows illuminated the sheer lace, rendering the pale pink almost transparent against her skin. And beneath... the vivid auburn triangle of her pubic hair blazed through the fabric like a neon sign. Heat flooded her cheeks, a different kind of warmth than the island sun.
"Damn it," she muttered, pulling the thin material at her hips. "Stupid. Of course you can see it." She felt suddenly, intensely visible in a way that was the opposite of the freedom she craved. This wasn’t the confident exposure of her fantasy; this was an awkward accident. Embarrassment prickled hotly down her spine.
She retreated to the bathroom again, slamming the door a little harder than necessary. Staring at her flushed face in the mirror, the vibrant red hair framing it felt suddenly connected to the equally vibrant patch below. Her usual landing strip, usually a point of private pride, now felt like a liability shouting through flimsy fabric.
"Problem?" Cody called through the door, his voice careful.
"My stupid hair is the problem," Julie replied, her voice tight. "It's like... glowing through everything." She rummaged frantically through the suitcase contents she’d dragged in with her. Darker underwear? She pulled out a pair of plain navy blue briefs, sturdy cotton. Practical. Ugly. She paired it with a dark grey, slightly thicker knit tank top. She emerged again, feeling frumpy.
Cody tilted his head. "Okay, the visibility problem is solved. Definitely can't see through that." He paused, a small smile playing on his lips. "But Jules... you look like you're about to do laundry or conquer a spreadsheet. Not exactly... beach vibes."
Julie groaned, looking down at the sensible underwear and drab top. He was right. It screamed "malfunction", not "relaxed island getaway". Defeated, she slumped back against the bathroom doorframe. "Okay, let me see if I've got anything else."
She rummaged through her suitcase and found another lacey pair of panties and tried them on, stepping out to seek Cody's opinion. These were black lace, slightly darker than the pink, but still treacherously thin. She turned her back to the wide windows, the afternoon sun a relentless spotlight. "Better?"
Cody squinted, then winced. "Uh... Jules? Still pretty clear." He pointed vaguely towards her crotch. "The sunlight's brutal. It’s like... backlit. Your, uh... signature color is definitely announcing itself." He rubbed the back of his neck, looking apologetic but truthful.
Julie spun, craning to see herself in the mirror again. He was right. The dark lace did little to obscure the vibrant red strip beneath; the intense island light rendered the fabric almost invisible. Frustration bubbled up, hot and sharp. "Seriously? It’s like my pubes have their own damn neon sign!" She yanked at the waistband, the delicate lace biting into her skin. "This is ridiculous. I can't wear any of this stuff like this. It just looks... messy."
She paced the small space between the beds, the cool tiles under her feet doing nothing to cool her rising irritation. All her lacy options were useless under this sun. The sensible cotton was hideous. Clothing optional echoed in her head, both terrifying and tempting. But jumping straight to nude felt too big, too sudden. She needed a buffer, a way to test the water, literally and figuratively. Her mind raced, landing on the simplest, most direct solution. "Maybe... maybe I should just shave it off?" The words tumbled out, surprising even her.
Cody blinked. "Shave? Like... all of it?" He wasn't shocked, just processing. Practical Cody.
"Yeah. Why not?" Julie’s voice gained momentum, fueled by determination. "It’s just hair. Grows back. And then... problem solved. No neon sign." She gestured towards the offending area. "Got your razor? Mine’s probably in the other suitcase." Her tone was matter-of-fact, masking the slight tremor of nerves beneath. This wasn't about seduction; it was about solving the sheer-panty visibility crisis under tropical light.
Cody didn't hesitate. He rummaged in his dop kit on the bathroom counter and pulled out a blue disposable razor. "Fresh blade," he said, handing it to her. "Go for it. Want me to...?"
"Nope, got it," Julie said, snatching the razor. She marched back into the bathroom and slammed the door firmly but not angrily. Alone, she leaned against the cool tile wall, taking a shaky breath. The absurdity hit her: standing barefoot on a luxurious resort bathroom floor, about to shave her pubic hair off so she could potentially wear tiny underwear to the beach. Adventure, indeed.
She turned on the tap, letting warm water run into the deep tub. Steam began to curl in the air. Quickly, efficiently, she shed the black lace panties. The reflection showed the bright auburn triangle stark against her pale skin. Right. Off it goes. She lathered soap in her hands, working it into a rough lather over the area, the scent clean and bracing.
Then, the razor. It felt awkward, bending over the tub, the unfamiliar angle. She took it slow, mindful of the blade against sensitive skin. Small, careful strokes. The sound of the razor scraping was loud in the tiled room, mingling with the splash of water. Dark red curls gathered in the soap, swirling down the drain. It felt strange, exposing, even alone. A shedding.
It took only a few focused minutes. She rinsed thoroughly under the tap, the water shockingly cold against the newly bare skin. Patting dry with a fluffy resort towel, she examined the result. Smooth. Pale. Utterly unremarkable beneath sheer fabric. Mission accomplished. The vulnerability subsided, replaced by a sense of pragmatic achievement. She pulled on a fresh pair of panties – another lacey one, pale blue this time – and checked the mirror. Perfect. Just fabric now, no announcement underneath.
