Tell the story in first person from Aidan's point of view. Aidan's best friend Catriona admits to him that she wants to date him. She decides to be honest with him and tells him that she has been in love with him since they were teenagers and has stayed a virgin because any man that asked her out seemed to be a poor substitute for him.

Chapter 2: The Threshold

The hallway was narrow, dark after the kitchen’s sunlit gold. The air smelled of old paperbacks from the stacked shelves and the lingering ghost of her lavender candle. A single bulb in a cheap fixture cast a jaundiced light, making their shadows stretch and merge on the peeling wallpaper. Aidan’s hand was warm around hers, his grip firm, an anchor in the dizzying current between them.

He stopped just before her bedroom door, turning to face her. Her back gently met the wall. He could feel the rapid flutter of her pulse through her wrist.

“Okay?” he asked, his voice low.

She nodded, her green eyes huge. “More than okay. Terrified. Excited. Mostly… real. This feels real.”

“It is real.” He leaned in, capturing her mouth again, slower this time. Exploring. He felt the sigh leave her body before he heard it, a dissolution of tension she must have carried for years. His hands came up to frame her face, thumbs stroking her cheekbones. When he pulled back, her lips were parted, damp.

“I have to tell you something,” she whispered, her fingers plucking at the fabric of his shirt. “I’m not… I don’t know what I’m doing. The theory is solid, but the practical…”

A laugh rumbled in his chest, unexpected and light. It broke the last of the sacred, trembling tension. “We’ve built a friendship from the ground up, Cat. We can figure this out together. No manuals required.”

The familiar, easy humor between them, surfacing here, now, felt like a lifeline. She grinned, that brilliant, freckled smile that had pulled him from a hundred bad moods. “Just promise you won’t compare me to your algorithmic models.”

“Not a chance.” He kissed the corner of her mouth, then her jaw, his lips traveling down the sensitive cord of her neck. She arched into him, a soft sound escaping her. His hand slid from her face, down her side, and under the hem of her soft cotton sweater. The skin of her stomach was warm, smooth. He felt her muscles contract under his palm.

“Aidan.” His name was a breath.

He pushed the fabric up, exposing her midriff, and bent to press a kiss just below her navel. She shuddered. He looked up, meeting her gaze. “Tell me to stop anytime.”

“Don’t you dare stop.”

He straightened and gently lifted the sweater over her head. It joined the forgotten pencil on the floor. She wore a simple, practical bra. She was blushing, a deep rose spreading from her chest to her throat, but she held his look, defiant and vulnerable all at once.

“You’re beautiful,” he said, and it wasn’t a line. It was an observation, stark and plain as the sun. He traced the line of her collarbone with a single finger, then the upper curve of her breast above the cotton. “Always have been.”

Her hands came up to work the buttons of his shirt. Her fingers fumbled. “You’re making me nervous again.”

“Take your time.” He covered her hands with his, stilling them, then helped her with the rest. His shirt fell open. Her palms flattened against his chest, exploring the planes of his lean build, the scatter of dark hair. Her touch was curious, reverent. It ignited him.

He unfastened her bra with a practiced ease that made her raise an eyebrow. “Hoped, didn’t you?”

“Dreamed,” he corrected, and let the straps fall.

For a moment, they just looked. The dim light painted her in shades of gold and shadow. He saw her breath catch, saw the flutter in her throat. He bent his head and took one pebbled peak into his mouth. Her cry was sharp, her hands flying to his hair, holding him to her. He lavished attention on each breast, learning her responses with his tongue and lips, until her knees buckled and she was clinging to him.

He swung her up into his arms. She was light, all long limbs and sharp angles. She buried her face in his neck, her laughter a nervous, giddy puff of air. “Cheesy.”

“You love it.”

“I really do.”

He shouldered her bedroom door open. Her room was exactly as he knew it: textbooks and journals piled on a desk, a framed poster of the periodic table, her worn comforter a chaos of color against neat, white sheets. He laid her down in the center of the bed. She watched him, chest rising and falling quickly, as he toed off his shoes and stripped off his jeans and boxers.

Her eyes widened. She’d seen him in swim trunks, but never like this. Fully aroused, the reality of him was… substantial. He saw a flicker of genuine apprehension cross her features.

He joined her on the bed, lying on his side, propped on an elbow, not touching her yet. “Hey. It’s just me.”

“I know.” She swallowed. “It’s just… the fantasy versus the engineering specs. The specs are… impressive.”

He chuckled, kissing her shoulder. “We’ll go slow. You set the pace. Always.”

He began to explore her with his hands and mouth, mapping her body as if it were uncharted territory worthy of the most diligent study. He kissed the constellation of freckles across her nose, then the ones scattered like cinnamon over her shoulders. He traced the line of her ribs, the dip of her waist, the flare of her hips. He peeled her pajama bottoms and panties down her legs, his breath catching as she was finally, completely bare before him.

She was exquisite. All fierce, vibrant Catriona, laid open and trusting.

When his fingers first brushed the soft, curly hair between her thighs, she jumped. He soothed her with kisses, murmuring nonsense against her skin until she relaxed. He touched her gently, learning her folds, finding the slick, hot evidence of her desire. When he slipped a finger inside, she gasped, her body tightening around him.

“Okay?” he murmured against her ear.

“So okay. More.”

He added a second finger, working slowly, watching her face. Her eyes were squeezed shut, her lips parted. A soft, rhythmic sound escaped her with each breath. He curved his fingers, searching, and found a spot that made her back bow off the mattress.

“Aidan!” Her eyes flew open, shocked by the sensation.

He smiled, kissing her deeply as he continued the gentle, insistent pressure. He felt her climbing, her thighs trembling, her fingers digging into his biceps. He watched her fall apart for the first time, her release washing over her in silent, shuddering waves, her face a mask of stunned, breathless wonder.

As she came down, panting, he settled between her legs. His own need was a raw, throbbing ache. He pressed his forehead to hers, his body hovering over hers. The tip of him nudged at her entrance.

Her legs wrapped around his hips. Her eyes, hazy with pleasure, cleared and focused on his. “Now,” she whispered. “I want you now. All of you.”

He pushed forward, slowly, infinitely slowly. He felt her body resist, tight and untried, then give way. Her breath hitched, a sharp inhale of pain. He froze, his entire body trembling with the effort.

“Don’t stop,” she choked out, her nails scoring his back. “Just… keep going.”

He did, sinking deeper by agonizing degrees, until he was fully sheathed within her. They were both still, joined, breathing in ragged unison. A tear escaped from the corner of her eye, tracking through her freckles. He kissed it away.

“Cat,” he breathed, the word thick with emotion. “Look at me.”

She did. Her green eyes held his, full of pain and wonder and a love so deep it shook him.

He began to move. A slow, deliberate rhythm. The pain in her face gradually ebbed, replaced by a dawning, building intensity. She met his movements, tentatively at first, then with more confidence. Her sighs became moans, her head thrashing side to side on the pillow.

The feel of her was beyond anything he’d imagined. Tight, hot, welcoming. She was everywhere, all around him, and she was Catriona. His best friend. The woman who’d waited. The love he’d been too blind to see.

The coil in his gut tightened unbearably. He drove deeper, faster, lost in the sensation of her. Her cries became frantic, matching his pace. He could feel her inner muscles beginning to flutter around him again.

“Aidan, I’m… I’m gonna…”

“Come with me,” he gritted out, the words tearing from him. He clutched her to him, his mouth finding hers in a desperate kiss. “You’re mine, Cat. You always have been.”

The words, her fantasy given voice, shattered her. Her climax ripped through her, a silent, seismic convulsion that pulled his own release from the depths of him. He spilled into her, hot and deep, his own cry muffled against her skin. He poured himself out, body and soul, filling her with the proof of decades of suppressed longing.

For a long time, there was only the sound of their harsh breaths slowing. He was heavy on her, but she held him there, her arms locked around him. He could feel the frantic beat of her heart against his own.

Finally, he softened and slipped from her. He rolled to his side, gathering her against him, her back to his chest. He pulled the comforter over them both. Her skin was damp, her hair a riot against his cheek.

She was quiet for so long he thought she might have fallen asleep. Then her hand found his where it rested on her stomach, lacing their fingers together.

“So,” she said, her voice raspy but laced with its old, familiar humor. “That was the practical exam.”

He laughed into her hair, a sound of pure, exhausted joy. “You passed. With flying colors.”

“What’s the next module?”

He tightened his arms around her. The future, vast and unknown, yawned before them. Their friendship was now something else, something more fragile and more powerful. “We’ll figure it out,” he whispered. “Together.”

Outside, a car door slammed. The ordinary world went on. In her bed, tangled in sheets that now held the scent of them both, they drifted, anchored in the new, terrifying, perfect reality they had chosen.
