Chapter 7: Morning Light and Promises
Aidan woke to the subtle weight of fingers tracing the lines of his pectoral, following the ridge of a collarbone. Morning light, diluted through the linen curtains, lay in soft stripes across the bed. Catriona’s head was pillowed on his shoulder, her fiery hair a brilliant chaos against his skin. He didn’t open his eyes, just absorbed the feeling: the solid warmth of her along his side, the quiet, the sheer reality of it.
“I know you’re awake,” she murmured. Her voice was sleep-roughened, intimate.
He cracked an eye open. She was watching him, her green gaze soft and unguarded. A dusting of freckles stood out across her nose. “How?”
“Your breathing changed.” She shifted, wincing slightly, a faint smile touching her lips. “And other things.”
He felt himself flush, a warm rush that had nothing to do with embarrassment. He turned onto his side to face her fully, the sheets pooling around his waist. He brushed a strand of hair from her cheek. “Good morning.”
“It is,” she said, simply. They lay there for a while, just looking. The air between them wasn’t electric anymore; it was settled, deep, like still water. He could see the faint purple smudges under her eyes, the slight puffiness of her lips from last night’s kisses. She had never looked more beautiful.
“Does it feel different?” he asked, his thumb stroking her jaw.“Looking at me?”
She considered it. “Yes and no.It’s still you.But now I know what your skin tastes like. I know the sound you make when you…” She trailed off, a blush warming her cheeks. “It’s more. It’s everything.”
He kissed her forehead, breathing in the scent of lavender and sleep and her. “I kept dreaming I’d imagined it.”
“Me too.” She let out a soft laugh.“My body’s doing a pretty convincing job of confirming it happened, though. In a good way,” she added quickly, seeing his look of concern.
“Are you sore?”
“A little. It’s a nice sore.” She rolled onto her back, stretching her arms above her head, the sheets slipping to reveal the pale curve of her breast. She caught him looking and didn’t pull the sheet back up.A quiet challenge sparkled in her eyes. “Worth it.”
He propped himself up on an elbow, looking down at her. The morning light gilded her skin, making the fine hairs on her arms glow. He let his gaze wander, freely, worshipping the landscape he’d only begun to explore. The constellation of freckles on her shoulders. The graceful dip of her waist. The russet triangle of curls at the junction of her thighs, still glistening faintly with the evidence of his possession. His cock, heavy against his thigh, stirred insistently.“Stop,” she whispered, but she was smiling.
“I can’t.” His voice was rough.“I spent years not looking. I’m making up for lost time.”
She reached for him, her hand closing around him, a firm, knowing touch that made his breath hitch. “I can feel that.”
He leaned down and kissed her, a slow, deepening kiss that tasted of sleep and shared breath. Her fingers began to move, a lazy, teasing stroke. He groaned into her mouth.
“Again?” he asked, pulling back just enough to see her face.“Yes,” she said, no hesitation.“But slower. I want to remember every second.”
He moved over her, settling into the cradle of her hips. She was already opening for him, her knees falling apart. He guided himself to her entrance, slick and warm, and pressed forward with an aching slowness. She inhaled sharply, her eyes fluttering closed, then opening to lock with his as he filled her. The tight, hot clasp was less a shock now than a profound homecoming.“God, Cat,” he breathed, suspended, fully sheathed.
Her hands came up to frame his face.“Move. Please.”
He set a rhythm that was pure languid torture.Long, deep pulls that dragged a moan from her throat with every retreat. He watched her face, watched the pleasure build like a slow sunrise. He kissed the hollow of her throat, the swell of her breast, her stomach. This wasn’t the frantic, passionate coupling of the night before; this was a conversation, a revelation in increments.
“You feel like mine,” he whispered against her skin, the words coming unbidden, true.
“I am.” Her voice was thick. “Always was.”
He shifted, angling his hips, and her back arched off the bed, a choked cry bursting from her.“There. Right there, Aidan.” Her nails scored his back, not in pain, but in desperate anchoring.
He focused on that spot, driving into it with relentless, measured precision. Her breathing shattered into gasps. Her legs tightened around him, pulling him deeper with each thrust. He could feel her climax coiling, a tangible tension in the air between them.“Look at me,” he demanded, his own control fraying.
Her eyes flew open, glazed and beautiful. He held her gaze as he felt her begin to unravel. “Come for me,” he urged, his voice a low rasp. “Let me feel it.”
It was the permission she needed. Her body seized, a violent, trembling wave that clenched around him like a fist. A raw, keening sound tore from her lips, and he watched, mesmerized, as ecstasy transformed her face. The sight was his undoing. He drove into her one last, deep time, spilling inside her with a groan that was half her name, half a prayer, his forehead collapsing against her shoulder as he pulsed into her warmth.
He didn’t move for a long time, letting the aftershocks subside, feeling her heart hammer against his own. When he finally lifted his head, her eyes were closed, a serene exhaustion on her face. He started to pull out.“Don’t,” she murmured, her legs locking around his hips. “Not yet.”
So he stayed, nestled deep within her, and rolled them onto their sides, still joined. They lay face to face, noses almost touching. He brushed his lips over hers.
“So,” she said after a while, her voice drowsy with satisfaction.“Best friends who are… this. What do we call that?”
He knew what he wanted. The question felt both enormous and simple. “How about girlfriend?” he asked, his throat tight.“Will you be my girlfriend, Cat? Officially.”
A slow smile spread across her face, so bright it made his chest ache. A single tear escaped the corner of her eye and he caught it with his thumb. “Yes,” she said.“Obviously, yes.”
He kissed her, a sweet, sealing kiss. The simplicity of it was dizzying.
The trill of his phone, vibrating on the nightstand, shattered the quiet. It was his work ringtone. He let out a frustrated sigh.
“Ignore it,” she whispered, nuzzling his neck.“Can’t.It’s Jenkins. He only calls on weekends if the server’s on fire.” Reluctantly, he disentangled himself from her and leaned over to grab the phone. “Hello?”
As he listened to his manager’s stressed voice detailing a critical system failure, he felt Catriona’s hand begin to trace slow, possessive circles on his lower back. Her touch was a distraction and an anchor. He gave short, technical answers, his mind already deploying code, troubleshooting pathways.
He hung up and dropped the phone on the bed with a thud.“I’m so sorry. I have to go in.There’s a cascade failure. It’ll take hours.”
Her face fell for a second, then resolved into understanding. She was an engineer, too; she got it.“Go. Save the world from bits and bytes.”
He kissed her, hard and quick. “I’ll be back as soon as I can. Don’t… move.”
“I might shower,” she said, a playful glint returning. “But I’ll be here.”
He dressed quickly, his clothes from last night smelling of her, of them.At the bedroom door, he turned back. She was sitting up against the headboard, the sheet wrapped around her, watching him. Her hair was a glorious mess, her lips swollen, her skin marked by his stubble and his hands. A painting he’d created.His.
“I love you,” he said, the words feeling both monumental and as natural as breathing. She hugged the sheet tighter, her smile soft and sure.“I love you too. Now go fix your server. Your girlfriend demands your return.”
He left, the words echoing in his head, a new and fragile rhythm beneath the familiar pulse of the city outside. His world had tilted, but for the first time, it felt perfectly, irrevocably aligned.
