Chapter 1: The Pothole That Changed Everything
The truck hit the pothole with a jarring thud, the suspension groaning in protest. Maggie’s body, already off-balance as she leaned forward to point out a hawk, was thrown sideways. Not into the door. Into Bobby.
The old man’s solid, wide body didn’t yield an inch. Instead, a thick arm wrapped around her shoulders, ostensibly to steady her. It felt like being caught in the root of an old tree.
“Whoa there, darlin’,” Bobby’s voice rasped near her ear, a cloud of stale tobacco and coffee. His hand, wide and rough as a catcher’s mitt, landed on her ribs. Then it slid, with a blunt, unhesitating certainty, up and over the soft curve of her breast.
Maggie froze.
It wasn’t an accidental brush. It was a full, deliberate grasp. His calloused palm covered her completely, his thick fingers kneading the soft flesh through the thin cotton of her blouse with a possessive hunger that stopped her breath. A bolt of pure, electric shock—part terror, part something else entirely—seared through her.
In the front seat, John chuckled, his eyes on the winding country road. “Big one. Town really needs to fix this stretch.”
His words sounded distant, muffled, as if Maggie were hearing them from underwater. Her own heart was a deafening drum in her ears. She couldn’t move. She could only feel the astonishing heat of Bobby’s hand, the shocking pressure of his grip, the way her nipple had hardened instantly into a tight, aching point beneath the fabric. It was visible, she knew it was, a stark peak against the material.
Bobby didn’t remove his hand. He held her there, pinned against his side, his thumb making a slow, filthy circle over that taut nipple. Maggie’s lips parted on a silent gasp. She stared straight ahead, at the back of John’s head, her eyes wide and unblinking. A deer in the headlights of her own bizarre, rising excitement.
“You alright back there, Mags?” John asked, his glance flicking up to the rearview mirror.
For a horrific, thrilling second, Maggie was certain he would see. He would see Bobby’s massive hand cupping her breast, see the blatant outline of her arousal. She imagined his calm expression shattering. But John’s eyes were on the road again before they could focus, before they could comprehend the tableau in his own backseat.
“Fine,” she squeaked, the word strangled. She bit down hard on her lower lip, the small pain a tether to reality. What was happening? This was Bobby. Unkempt, missing-toothed, old Bobby who told rambling stories about fertilizer. His beard scratched the side of her neck. He smelled of hard work and damp earth and man.
And yet, his hand on her felt like a claim. An assertion. It was nothing like John’s familiar, almost clinical touches. This was primal. Gross. Absolutely fucking riveting.
“Good,” John said, oblivious. “Bobby, you were saying about the water table?”
Bobby’s thumb pressed down, a firm, rotating pressure that made a low whimper stick in Maggie’s throat. His voice was calm, conversational, as he answered John. “Yeah, well, it’s shale underneath. Holds a poison. Ain’t right.”
All the while, his hand worked her. The kneading became more specific, his fingers plucking at her nipple through the cloth, rolling it, before his palm settled back to weigh the full swell of her. Maggie felt a damp heat pooling between her legs, a traitorous, shameful slickness. Her face flamed. She should shove him away. She should scream. She should tell John.
She did nothing. Her body, tense as a wire, began to betray her mind, melting incrementally into his grasp. A slight, almost imperceptible arch of her back, pushing her breast more firmly into his hand.
Bobby noticed. A low, grunting sound vibrated in his chest, a sound meant only for her. His other hand, which had been resting on his own thick thigh, moved. It came down onto her leg, just above her knee. The denim of her jeans was no barrier; she felt the sheer mass of that hand, the heat of it, through the material. It sat there, heavy as a stone, a promise of more.
The truck rattled on, the peaceful landscape a blur outside the window. John drove, talking amiably about well-digging permits. And in the backseat, in a world compressed to vinyl creaks and ragged breath, Bobby took what he wanted. His hand on her leg began a slow, insidious journey upward. His fingers brushed her inner thigh.
Maggie jerked, finally, a spasm of panic breaking through the daze. She clamped her thighs together, trapping his wandering hand. Her chest heaved. She turned her face, finally, to look at him.
His eyes were closer than she expected. A pale, watery blue, surrounded by a web of deep wrinkles. There was no apology in them. No lechery, even. Just a calm, unsettling knowledge. A knowledge of her, of the wetness he was undoubtedly feeling through her jeans now, of the frantic rabbit-pulse in her throat. He knew she wouldn’t say a word.
He leaned in, his beard scratching her cheek. His breath was foul and intimate. “Easy, girl,” he murmured, so quietly the words were just a shape on the air. “Just gettin’ comfortable. Ain’t that right?”
His fingers, trapped between her clenched thighs, exerted a steady, inexorable pressure. They pushed upwards, a blunt intrusion against the seam of her jeans, against the hot, throbbing center of her. A single, rough finger pressed right where she was most sensitive, most wet.
Maggie’s eyes rolled back for a second, a white flash of pleasure-pain stars behind her lids. A proper, strangled moan escaped her bitten lips.
“Maggie?” John’s voice from the front. Concerned now. “You sure you’re okay? You sound strange.”
Bobby’s finger pressed again, a cruel, delicious rub. His other hand finally released her breast, only to snake around her waist, pulling her fully into his lap. She could feel the solid, sprawling bulk of him, and then, pressing into the back of her thigh through his worn jeans, the immense, rigid proof of his arousal. It was a shock of size, a terrifying, impressive thickness that made her gasp anew.
“She’s just tired, John,” Bobby said, his voice still that same, even rasp. He was looking over her head, talking to her husband as his hand slid from her waist to her stomach, fingers splayed, holding her possessively against the monster in his pants. “All this fresh air. Wears a city girl out.”
John made a sound of agreement. “Almost home, honey.”
Home. The word was meaningless. Home was her tidy desk, her manuscript, her predictable life with her predictable husband. This—this sweating, clutching, crude violation in the back of a moving truck—this was something else entirely. This was the wild, dark country under the country.
Bobby was dropped off at his driveway and as he got out of the truck he looked at Maggie and said "See you soon."
