Chapter 4: Chapter 4

The sun was dipping low in the sky, casting long, dancing shadows across Sarah's living room floor as she sat on her couch, her eyes scanning the words of a novel she couldn't seem to focus on. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air, a comforting scent that usually soothed her nerves, but today, it did little to alleviate the knot of anxiety in her stomach. Her phone buzzed on the coffee table, and she picked it up, her heart leaping at the sight of David's name on the screen.

'Hey you, are you free tonight?

I was thinking we could grab some dinner and maybe catch a movie.'

Sarah hesitated for a moment, her thumb hovering over the screen. She knew she should say no, that she should keep her distance from David. But the truth was, she looked forward to their nights together, even if they were just as friends. The way he made her laugh, the way he challenged her, it was all intoxicating. She typed out a quick reply, 'I'd love to. What time?'

'Great! How about I pick you up at 7? I'll text you the details. :)'

Sarah set her phone down, a soft smile playing on her lips.

She knew she was playing with fire, but the warmth of David's friendship was indispensable to her these days. It had been a long time since she had felt this alive, this seen, and she wasn't ready to give that up just yet

.

As 7 o'clock rolled around, Sarah found herself standing in front of her mirror, applying a final touch of lip gloss. She turned to the side, god, dammit, I look fucking huge. Then the doorbell rang. He was here "fuck"she thought.

\\ Quickly she put on a brave face, hoping he wouldn't notice the turmoil inside her. She took a deep breath and opened the door.

David stood there, his tall figure filling the doorway, a small smile playing on his lips. He was dressed casually in a dark sweater and jeans, but he still managed to look polished and put together. His eyes flicked over her briefly, taking in her appearance. Sarah felt a flush of embarrassment at the thought of what he might be thinking.

"You look great, Sarah," David said, his voice warm. "Ready to go?"

Sarah nodded, grabbing her coat from the rack by the door.

"Let's go."

David followed her out to the car, and Sarah couldn't help but notice the way his hand rested gently on the small of her back as he guided her. The simple gesture sent a shiver down her spine, and she quickly stepped away, breaking the contact.

The drive to the restaurant was filled with easy conversation, David asking about her day and sharing stories from his own work. Sarah laughed at his funny anecdotes, trying to push away the growing knot of unease in her stomach. They arrived at the restaurant, a cozy, upscale Italian joint, and David ushered her inside. The host guided them to a secluded booth in the back, where the soft lighting and intimate setting made Sarah feel almost claustrophobic.

Once they were seated, Sarah perused the menu, trying to ignore the way her jeans felt tight against her thighs. She had always loved Italian food, but now the thought of all that pasta and cheese made her feel nauseated.

David looked up from his menu, his eyes meeting hers. "You okay, Sarah?

You seem a bit distracted," David asked, his brow furrowing slightly. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just trying to decide what to order. Everything looks so good." She gestured to the menu, hoping to shift the focus away from herself.

David chuckled. "Well, you can't go wrong with anything here. I always get the lasagna. It's to die for."

Sarah nodded, her stomach churning at the thought of all the cheese and noodles.

"That does sound amazing. I think I'll go with the branzino, though. I need something a little lighter."

Her voice trailed off as she realized she was admitting her discomfort.

David looked at her, his eyes softening. "Hey, don't worry about it. You look beautiful, Sarah," he said, his voice gentle and reassuring. "You don't have to be a certain size to be attractive. Besides, I'd rather have someone who enjoys food with me than someone who picks at their salad."

Sarah felt her cheeks flush with embarrassment and gratitude. She hadn't expected him to be so understanding. "Thank you, David. That means a lot."

They continued their conversation, the tension dissipating as they laughed and joked over their meal. Sarah found herself relaxing, the knot in her stomach loosening as she enjoyed David's company.

After dinner, David suggested they go back to his place to watch a movie. Sarah hesitated for a moment before agreeing.

"Sure, walking sounds nice." She stood up from the table, subtly tugging at her dress to hide the slight bulge around her midsection. David noticed her discomfort but said nothing, simply offering his arm as they exited the restaurant.

The night air was cool and crisp, a welcome change from the warm, stuffy atmosphere of the restaurant. They walked in comfortable silence for a while, the sound of their footsteps echoing in the quiet streets. Sarah felt a pang of nervousness in her stomach as they approached her apartment building. She wasn't sure if David was expecting something to happen, and she wasn't sure how she felt about that.

As they reached her door, Sarah fumbled with her keys, her hands trembling slightly. David reached out to steady her hand, his touch sending a jolt through her. "Hey, it's okay.
