Chapter 11: Confession Over Cocktails
The rooftop air was cool and carried the distant hum of the city sixty stories below. Jennifer sipped her martini, the glass frosty against her fingers, and watched the ice cubes catch the light from the glowing bar. Across the small table, Sarah adjusted the strap of her silk camisole, a faint sheen of sweat on her collarbones from the climb up the last flight of stairs—the elevator only went to the fifty-ninth.
“This place is insane,” Sarah said, her eyes scanning the panorama. The city was a spilled jewel box, grids of light stretching to a dark horizon. “Norman’s platinum card, I assume?”
“It buys the view,” Jennifer said, setting her glass down with a precise click. “Not what happens in front of it.”
Sarah leaned forward, her curiosity piqued. “Okay, cryptic. Spill. You’ve been glowing all week. New therapist? Better drugs?”
Jennifer ran a finger around the rim of her glass. “New everything.” She took a breath, measuring her friend. Sarah was two years older, financially independent in a gritty way Jennifer admired, and utterly bored with her own sensible boyfriend. They’d shared secrets before, but nothing like this. “Remember how I said Norman and I were… exploring dynamics?”
“Vaguely. You said he was getting into some weird porn. I figured it was just grandpa trying to keep up.”
“It’s not him keeping up.” Jennifer’s voice dropped, conversational but charged. “It’s me running ahead. Last week, I had a man over. While Norman was home.”
Sarah’s martini halted halfway to her lips. “What, like an affair?”
“Not like an affair. Specifically because Norman was there. Watching.” She let the word hang in the space between them, over the minimalistic table.
Sarah set her drink down. “Watching you… fuck someone else?”
“Yes.” Jennifer took another sip, her gaze steady. “His name is Max. He’s a guy I met online. Looks like he should be on a billboard for protein shakes with a fucking 9 inch cock. And he fucked me on our bed for four hours while Norman sat downstairs and listened to it.”
Sarah’s mouth actually opened slightly. She blinked, processing. “Holy shit, Jen. Are you… was this, like, a one-time thing? Are you okay?”
“I’m better than okay.” A slow smile spread across Jennifer’s face, genuine and feline. “I’ve never been like that. He’s… thorough. And huge. Norman comes in about ninety seconds if I’m lucky. Max had me seeing stars. Literally. I counted four separate times I blacked out for a second.”
“Jesus.” Sarah’s voice was a whisper. She glanced around, as if someone might overhear, but the nearest patrons were a cluster of lawyers laughing loudly ten feet away. “And Norman just… allowed this?”
“He didn’t just allow it.” Jennifer’s tone turned clinical, dissective. “He poured the man a drink first. He sat in the living room and listened to the headboard slamming into the wall. Afterwards, when Max left, I made Norman come up and eat me out.”
Sarah’s jaw went slack. Her fingers tightened around her glass stem. “You’re joking.”
“I’ve never been more serious.” Jennifer reached for her clutch, a small black leather thing. She pulled out her phone, her movements fluid and deliberate. The screen lit up her face. “I recorded that part. The cleaning. Do you want to see?”
The question hung in the cool air. Sarah’s eyes flicked from Jennifer’ collaborate to the phone. Her initial shock was morphing into something else—a prurient curiosity, edged with disbelief. “You videoed it?”
“For personal use.” Jennifer’s thumb hovered over the screen. “Proof of concept, you could say. To show Norman exactly what his role is now. But I think you should see it. So you understand this isn’t some crisis. It’s a solution.”
Sarah hesitated, then gave a tiny, almost imperceptible nod. “Show me.”
Jennifer tilted the screen so only Sarah could see. She tapped play. The video was intimate, shaky at first, then steadying. The audio was clear—the rustle of sheets, a low, wet sound, Jennifer’s voice, breathy and commanding: “Get it all. Every drop.” The camera angle was from above, looking down the length of Jennifer’s body as she lay back on the disheveled bed, the black lace pushed down to her thighs. Norman’s head was between her legs, his shoulders hunched, performing his task with a grim, focused determination. His glasses were slightly askew. You could hear his ragged breathing, the soft, sick sounds of his obedience.
Sarah didn’t move. She stared at the phone screen, her own breathing shallowing. The video was only thirty seconds long. It ended with Jennifer pushing Norman’s head away with a bare foot, a dismissive shove against his cheek.
Jennifer locked the phone and slipped it back into her clutch. She watched Sarah’s face.
Sarah slowly leaned back in her chair. She was silent for a long moment, staring at the city lights without seeing them. Then she picked up her martini and drained half of it in one go. “Fuck,” she exhaled, the word steaming out on a breath.
“Indeed.”
Sarah’s eyes met Jennifer’s. There was no judgment in them now, only a kind of stunned reevaluation. Her silk blouse was a pale cream color, and under the thin fabric, the change was visible—the distinct, pointed tightening of her nipples, hardening against the material. She didn’t seem to notice, or she didn’t care to adjust herself.
“That’s… intense,” Sarah managed. Her voice had dropped an octave.
“It’s honest,” Jennifer corrected softly. “Norman gets what he’s always secretly wanted. I get what I’ve always actually needed. It’s a transaction that finally makes sense.”
Sarah shook her head, not in denial, but in slow absorption. “And this Max guy? He’s just… cool with being your live-action porn star?”
“He’s more than cool with it. He’s coming back on Thursday. Taking me to dinner first. Somewhere nice. Then he’s going to fuck me in the car in a public garage.” She said it plainly, watching the effect on Sarah. “I want the risk. The possibility of being seen. It makes it… sharper.”
Sarah’s tongue darted out to wet her lips. The hardened peaks of her nipples were unmistakable now, pressing against the delicate silk. She set her glass down, her fingers trembling just slightly. “And you’re not… scared? Of it blowing up? Of Norman snapping?”
Jennifer’s smile was cold and sure. “Norman won’t snap. The video is insurance, in a way. But that’s not even it. He’s dissolved. That night, after Max left, I let Norman get himself off. He had to use my feet. He cried after. He’s not a husband anymore. He’s a function. A useful appliance.”
The waiter glided over, a shadow in the dim light. “Another round, ladies?”
“Yes,” Jennifer said, not looking away from Sarah. “And keep them coming.”
As the waiter retreated, Sarah finally leaned forward again, her elbows on the table, her voice a conspiratorial murmur. “Okay. Tell me everything. From the beginning. What does it feel like, when he’s… you know. Compared to Norman.”
Jennifer felt a thrill that had nothing to do with the alcohol. It was the thrill of confession, of discipleship. She began to talk, her words graphic and unflinching. She described the weight of Max, the specific stretch and burn, the way he talked to her, the absolute absence of apology or negotiation. She described the look on Norman’s face as he mixed the martinis, the shaking of his hands.
Sarah listened, rapt, her own body responding subtly—a flush creeping up her neck, a slight shift in her seat. She asked questions, blunt and eager. “Does he choke you?” “Where does he finish?” “What do you call Norman while it’s happening?”
The second martinis arrived. The ice in the shaker at the bar glittered under blue LEDs. Jennifer felt powerful, lucid. She was not just living this new truth; she was crafting it into a story, and seeing it refracted in Sarah’s awed, aroused gaze made it more real.
“So what’s next?” Sarah asked finally, stirring the olive in her new drink. “After Thursday?”
“I don’t know,” Jennifer said, and the admission was exciting. “Maybe I’ll let Norman watch properly next time. From a chair in the corner. Maybe I’ll have Max invite a friend. The rules are… flexible.”
Sarah’s eyes widened. “God, you’ve changed.”
“I’ve woken up.” Jennifer finished her drink, the gin sharp and clean. “And I’m not going back to sleep.”
They sat in silence for a minute, the sounds of the bar a distant bubble around them. Sarah finally looked down at her own chest, seemed to notice the state of her nipples, and made no move to cover them. Instead, she smirked. “Well. This is going to make my date with Derek tonight incredibly boring.”
Jennifer laughed, a real, bright sound. “Tell him you have a headache.”
“I think,” Sarah said, standing up and gathering her clutch, “I’m going to go home and take care of this headache myself. While thinking very specific thoughts.” She leaned down, kissed Jennifer on the cheek. Her perfume was warm and familiar. “Text me after Thursday. Every detail.”
“I will.”
Jennifer watched her friend walk toward the elevator, her stride purposeful, her body alive with new knowledge. She signaled for the check. The city beneath her seemed to pulse, a network of possibilities. She felt no guilt, no trepidation. Only a vast, humming anticipation. Thursday couldn’t come soon enough.
