Chapter 1: Inciting Incident
Mallory leaned back in the plush armchair, her legs stretched out and crossed at the ankles. The room was a standard hotel issue, but the view from the window was anything but. The city lights sparkled against the night sky, casting a soft glow over the king-sized bed and the polished wooden desk. She had been to many cities on business trips, but there was something about this one that felt different. Perhaps it was the way the cool breeze from the open window carried with it the faint rhythm of jazz from a nearby street festival, or maybe it was the anticipation that bubbled within her like a glass of champagne ready to overflow.
Whatever it was, Mallory felt a sense of exhilaration that was both familiar and new. She had always been a woman who embraced her desires, but there was something about this trip that had her feeling more alive than usual.
She picked up her phone from the side table, swiping through the messages until she found the one she was looking for. A small smile played at the corners of her mouth as she read the words again. "Still up for that drink?" it said, followed by a winky face emoji. She had met him at the hotel bar last night, a handsome man with a charming smile and a body that filled out his suit in all the right places.
He had been the perfect gentleman, engaging her in conversation with a wit that was both sharp and disarming. She had felt a spark, a connection that was both unexpected and exhilarating. He had left his number, and she had texted him back, a simple "Yes, I'm still up for that drink." But now, as she sat in her room, the anticipation was building. She knew she should be focusing on her work, but the thought of him was too enticing to ignore.
She typed out a quick response, her fingers dancing over the screen. "Absolutely. I'm in room 1207.
Come on up when you're ready.
Mallory hit send, her heart pounding in her chest. She stood up, her eyes scanning the room as if looking for something to do, but her mind was elsewhere. She walked over to the window, her reflection staring back at her in the glass. She was dressed in a simple black dress, her hair falling in loose curls around her shoulders. She looked good, she knew that, but there was something about the way he had looked at her last night that made her feel...desirable. She hadn't felt that way in a long time, not like this.
She turned away from the window, her eyes landing on the bed.
It was a large, inviting space, the sheets a crisp white that seemed to shimmer under the soft glow of the bedside lamps. She walked over. She sat down on the edge of the bed, her fingers tracing the smooth fabric of the comforter. She could still feel the remnants of the day's activities, the slight ache in her muscles from the long walk through the city streets, the slight sting of the sun on her skin. She had been working hard, but there was something about this trip that had her feeling restless, eager for something more.
She heard a soft knock at the door, and her heart skipped a beat.
She stood up, smoothing down her dress as she walked towards the door. She took a deep breath, steadying herself before opening it. Standing in the doorway was the man from the bar, his smile as charming as she remembered. He was dressed in a simple white shirt, the top buttons undone, and a pair of dark jeans that hugged his legs in all the right places. His hair was slightly disheveled, as if he had run his hands through it one too many times, and his eyes sparkled with a mischievous glint.
"Mallory," he said, his voice a low rumble that sent a shiver down her spine.
"You look even more stunning than I remembered."
She smiled, stepping aside to let him in. "You're not so bad yourself," she replied, closing the door behind him. "What can I get you to drink?"
He turned to face her, his eyes scanning the length of her body. "I'm not really thirsty," he said, a playful smirk tugging at the corners of his mouth. "But I am curious."
Mallory raised an eyebrow, her lips curling into a smirk of her own. "Curious about what?" she asked, taking a step closer to him.
He mirrored her movement, closing the distance between them.
"Curious about what makes a woman like you, in a city like this, alone in a hotel room, with a man she just met." His voice was low, a soft growl that sent a thrill down her spine.
Mallory chuckled, a sound that was both playful and confident. "Well, that's quite the loaded question," she said, her eyes never leaving his. "But I'll give you a hint. It's not because I'm lonely."
He laughed, a sound that was warm and inviting. "I didn't think so," he said, his eyes twinkling with amusement.
"So, what's your secret, then?"
Mallory leaned in, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "Maybe it's just that I enjoy the thrill of the unknown. The excitement of meeting someone new, of exploring the possibilities."
He nodded, his gaze never leaving hers. "I can understand that. There's something about the unknown that's...intoxicating."
She smiled, her fingers tracing the line of his jaw. "Exactly. And right now, I'm feeling very...intoxicated."
He leaned into her touch, his eyes darkening with desire. "I'm glad to hear that," he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper.
He reached up, his fingers gently cupping her cheek, his thumb brushing against her skin. "Because I have to admit, I've been thinking about you all day."
Mallory felt a shiver run down her spine at his touch, her breath hitching slightly. She leaned into his hand, her eyes fluttering closed for a moment before she opened them again, her gaze locked onto his. "Is that so?" she asked, her voice a husky whisper.
He nodded, his thumb tracing the line of her jaw. "It is.
I couldn't stop thinking about your laugh, your smile, the way your eyes light up when you talk about something you're passionate about." His voice was soft, almost reverent, as if he was sharing a secret.
Mallory felt a warmth spread through her at his words. She had always been a sucker for a man who could make her feel seen, heard. And this man, with his charming smile and his thoughtful words, was doing just that. She took a step closer, her body pressing against his. She could feel the heat of him, the solidness of his muscles beneath his shirt. She wanted to explore that, to trace the lines of his body with her fingers, her tongue.
She wanted to feel him, to taste him. She wanted to know what it would feel like to have him inside her, to feel him move against her, to hear him groan her name as he came.
But she also wanted to take her time, to savor the anticipation, the buildup. She wanted to make him work for it, to make him earn it.
She stepped back, breaking the contact between them. He looked at her, his eyes filled with a mix of confusion and desire. She smiled, her fingers tracing the line of his lips.
"Patience," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Good things come to those who wait."
He nodded, his eyes never leaving hers.
