Chapter 2: Building Tension
Haili's fingers trembled as she dabbed antibiotic ointment onto Sam's wound, the slow, deliberate rhythm of her ministrations belied by the erratic pounding of her heart. The room was filled with the scent of the antiseptic, a sharp, medicinal smell that cut through the lingering aroma of the burgers. The streetlight outside cast long, dancing shadows on the walls, the soft glow of the moon adding a silvery sheen to the dim room. The soft hum of the city outside was a low, steady background noise, a constant reminder of the world beyond their little sanctuary.
Haili's breath hitched as she finished applying the bandage, her fingers brushing against Sam's forehead. She could feel the heat radiating off his skin, the rough stubble of his jaw a stark contrast to her soft touch.
Sam's eyes were locked onto hers, the intensity of his gaze making her heart flutter. She felt a sudden urge to lean in, to close the distance between them and press her lips against his. She quickly pulled her hand away, breaking the spell that had fallen over them.
"There," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "All better."
Sam smirked, his eyes never leaving hers.
