Chapter 3: Set Up

The den was filled with an unusual silence, the kind that only comes after a storm has passed, leaving the air heavy and thick with unspoken words. The scent of sex and sweat still lingered, mingling with the earthy aroma of the ancient oak tree that housed their secret hideout. The dim light cast by the string of fairy lights strung up around the room flickered gently, casting long, dancing shadows on the walls adorned with their eclectic collection of artwork.

Ombre sat huddled on the worn-out couch, his knees drawn up to his chest, his arms wrapped tightly around them.

His peacock tail feathers were ruffled, and his Luna Moth wings were folded against his back, their iridescent scales shimmering in the soft light. His eyes were closed, and his breath came in shallow gasps, as if he were trying to calm himself down.

The others were gathered around him, their faces etched with concern. Merak, the deer hybrid, was perched on the arm of the couch, his antlers casting long shadows on the wall. His oversized blue sweater was pulled up to his elbows, revealing his muscular arms. He had a comforting hand on Ombre's shoulder, his touch gentle yet firm.

"Hey, Ombre," he murmured, his voice soft and soothing. "You okay?" Ombre opened his eyes, his gaze meeting Merak's.

He shook his head, "N-no..." Ombre's voice was barely above a whisper, his eyes filled with a mix of fear and confusion. "I don't know what's happening to me. I feel... I feel so different."

Merak's hand tightened on Ombre's shoulder, his voice filled with concern. "It's okay, Ombre. We're here for you. We'll figure this out together." He looked up at the others, his eyes meeting Tessa's. "We need to talk to Akarui. He might know more about this."

Tessa nodded, her peacock tail feathers rustling softly as she stood up. "I'll go get him," she said, her voice filled with determination. She turned to look at Ankoku for a moment. "Take care of him. You did this."

Ankoku titled his head down, "I will. I'm sorry." Ankoku's voice was low, filled with a mix of concern and regret. He reached out, his hand gently cupping Ombre's cheek. "I never meant for this to happen, darling. I should have been more careful." Ombre leaned into Ankoku's touch, his eyes filled with tears. "It's not your fault," he whispered, his voice shaking. "I wanted it too." Ankoku's thumb brushed away a stray tear from Ombre's cheek, his eyes softening. "I know, darling. But I should have been more responsible." He paused for a moment, his eyes searching Ombre's. "Do you...

do you know what's happening to me, Ankoku?" Ombre asked, his voice barely above a whisper. His eyes were wide with fear and uncertainty, searching Ankoku's face for any hint of understanding.

Ankoku hesitated for a moment, his thumb still brushing away the tears from Ombre's cheek. He took a deep breath before speaking, "I have an idea, darling. But I need to be sure. I've heard stories, but I've never seen it happen before."

Ombre's breath hitched, his body tensing with anticipation and fear. "What is it? What's happening to me?" he asked, his voice shaking.

Ankoku's eyes softened, and he cupped Ombre's face in his hands, his thumbs gently brushing away the tears that were still streaming down Ombre's cheeks. "Ombre, you're... pregnant." Ankoku's voice was soft, gentle, as if he were breaking the news to a child. "Hybrids like us, we can get pregnant too, darling. And it seems like... well, it seems like you are." Ombre's eyes widened in shock, his breath hitching in his throat. "P-pregnant?" he stammered, his voice barely above a whisper. "But... but how? I mean, I know how it happens, but... but I'm a guy." Ankoku nodded, his thumbs still brushing away Ombre's tears. It's confusing, I know. But it happens. Our bodies are different, you know?

Some of us can carry young, and some of us can't. It seems like you can, darling." Ombre's eyes searched Ankoku's face, looking for any sign of deceit or jest. But all he found was sincerity and concern. "But... but what do I do now?" he asked, his voice shaking with fear and uncertainty. Ankoku's grip on Ombre's face tightened, his thumbs still brushing away the tears. "We'll figure it out together, okay? I promise. We'll get through this." Ombre nodded, his body still trembling with shock and fear. "O-okay," he whispered, his voice barely audible.

"I heard that when you... uhm... give birth, it'll be as an egg for hybrids." Merak said, putting a comforting arm across Ombre's back. "But it'll... you'll come each time you give birth and on average... most hybrids give birth to ten... ten eggs." Ombre's eyes widened in shock, his breath catching in his throat. "Ten?" he repeated, his voice barely above a whisper. "That's... that's a lot." Ankoku nodded, his eyes filled with a mix of concern and understanding. "Yes, it is. But don't worry, darling. We'll be here for you every step of the way." Tessa, who had been quietly observing the exchange, finally spoke up. "We'll all be here for you, Ombre. Akarui, who had just returned from his meeting with the other hybrids, stepped forward.

His eyes were filled with rage, "What the hell did you do to my little brother!?" Akarui's voice echoed through the den, his lion's mane bristling with anger. His tail swished back and forth, a clear sign of his agitation. "You're supposed to be taking care of him, Ankoku! Not getting him pregnant!" Ankoku's eyes widened in surprise, his grip on Ombre's face tightening. "Akarui, I..." he started, but Akarui cut him off with a snarl. "You're supposed to be the smart one, Ankoku! The one who's supposed to know better!" Tessa stepped forward, her peacock tail feathers rustling softly. "Akarui, calm down. This isn't Ankoku's fault."

"He made him pregnant, Tessa! He shouldn't even be touching my little brother without my permission!" Akarui's voice boomed through the den, his lion's mane bristling with anger.

"This is unacceptable, Ankoku! You're supposed to be the responsible one!" Ankoku's eyes flashed with anger, but he kept his voice calm. "Akarui, I understand you're upset, but this isn't helping. We need to focus on what's best for Ombre right now." Akarui's eyes softened slightly as he looked at Ombre, who was still huddled on the couch, his body trembling with fear and shock. He took a deep breath and nodded. "You're right. I'm sorry, Ombre." He turned back to Ankoku, his voice stern. "But we will be having a serious talk about this later."

Ombre gasped, wrapping his arms around his stomach. "Gah! It hurts..."

Merak caught him, holding him still. "I think... I think he's in labor." Merak's voice was calm, but there was an undercurrent of urgency. "We need to get him to the nest." Ankoku nodded, scooping Ombre up gently into his arms. "It's going to be okay, darling. We're here for you." Ombre whimpered, his body tensing as another wave of pain hit him. "It hurts... it hurts so much..." he cried, his voice filled with pain and fear. Tessa stepped forward, her voice soothing. "We know, Ombre. But you're strong. You can do this." Akarui, despite his earlier outburst, was now the picture of calm.

"We need him to lie down and remove his pants." Merak said, grabbing a kit of tools from a drawer. "We need to make sure he's comfortable and safe." Ankoku nodded, carrying Ombre carefully towards the nest, a cozy corner of the den filled with soft blankets and pillows. Tessa and Akarui quickly cleared the space, making room for Ombre to lie down. Ombre whimpered, his body tensing as another contraction hit him. "Here, darling," Ankoku said softly, laying Ombre down gently on the nest. "Let's get these off you." He carefully removed Ombre's jeans, leaving him in just his boxers. Ombre's body was slick with sweat, his breath coming in short gasps.

His eyes were closed, and his body was tense with each contraction, his hands gripping the blankets beneath him.

Merak, who had been standing by the nest, his antlers casting long shadows on the wall, stepped forward. He had a small, wooden bowl in his hands, filled with warm water and a soft cloth. "Let's clean you up a bit, Ombre," he said, his voice soft and soothing. "Keep him still, he'll be giving birth in about five minutes." Merak instructed, his voice steady and calm. He dipped the cloth into the warm water and gently wiped Ombre's forehead, his cheeks, and his neck. Ombre's breath hitched as another contraction hit him, his body tensing and his hands gripping the blankets even tighter.

Tessa, who had been standing by the nest, her peacock tail feathers rustling softly, stepped forward. She placed a comforting hand on Ombre's shoulder, her voice soothing. "You're doing great, Ombre. Just a little longer." She leaned down, her voice barely above a whisper. "You're strong, remember?

You can do this," Tessa whispered, her thumb gently brushing away a bead of sweat from Ombre's temple. He could feel the pressure building in his lower abdomen, the sensation both foreign and terrifying. But with Tessa's hand on his shoulder and Ankoku's arms wrapped protectively around him, he felt a glimmer of courage.

Merak, meanwhile, had positioned himself at the foot of the nest, his eyes focused on Ombre's abdomen. He had laid out a clean towel beneath him and was now preparing a pair of sterilized scissors and a length of thread. "Alright, Ombre," he said, his voice calm and steady.

"I need you to push now, okay? On the count of three." Ombre nodded, his body tensing as another contraction hit him. "One... two... three..." Merak counted, his voice firm yet gentle. Ombre pushed with all his might, his body shaking with the effort. He could feel something moving inside him, something large and hard. It was terrifying, yet exhilarating at the same time. He pushed again, and again, his body shaking with each contraction. And then, suddenly, it was over. A small, round object slipped out of him, landing with a soft plop onto the towel beneath him.

It was covered in a thin, translucent membrane, pulsating gently with life. Ombre's eyes widened in shock and awe as he realized what it was. An egg. His egg.

"Oh my god," he whispered, his voice filled with wonder and disbelief. "I did it. I actually did it."

Merak quickly grabbed the egg, carefully wiping it clean with a soft cloth. He then handed it to Tessa, who had been watching with bated breath. She took it gently in her hands, her eyes filled with amazement as she examined the tiny, perfect egg.

"It's beautiful, Ombre," she murmured, her voice filled with admiration. "Just nine more, yeah?" Merak said, petting Ombre's hair. "Just nine more." Merak's voice was gentle, yet firm, as he stroked Ombre's hair. "You did great, Ombre. You're a natural." Ombre looked up at Merak, his eyes filled with a mix of relief and exhaustion. "I can't believe it," he whispered, his voice barely audible. "I actually did it." Tessa, who had been holding the egg, looked up from her examination. "It's perfect, Ombre," she said, her voice filled with pride. "You should be proud of yourself."

Ombre nodded, weakly trying to move up. "Ah.. ow...." Ombre winced, trying to sit up but failing miserably. His body felt like it had been through a wringer, every muscle aching and protesting. Ankoku was quick to support him, helping him into a more comfortable position. "Easy there, darling," he murmured, his voice soft and soothing. "You've been through a lot." Ombre leaned into Ankoku's touch, grateful for the support. He looked around the den, his eyes landing on each of his friends in turn. "Thank you," he said, his voice hoarse with emotion. "All of you. May I... see them?" He was looking at each of them with a mix of gratitude and awe. "Of course, Ombre," she said, her voice filled with pride. "We're here for you, no matter what." Akarui, who had been standing by the nest, his lion's mane bristling with concern, stepped forward. "You're right, Ombre. We're a family. And families stick together." He looked at Ankoku, his eyes softening. "Even when things get... complicated." Ankoku nodded, his eyes meeting Akarui's.
