Chapter 4: Catalyst
A soft chirp escaped Ombre's mouth.
In a make-shift neck, there was Ombre and an egg he gave birth too. The egg was small, yet it was the most precious thing in the world to Ombre. He cradled it gently in his hands, his eyes filled with a mix of awe and protectiveness. The others watched him, their faces filled with a mix of relief and pride.
Merak, the deer hybrid, was the first to speak. "That was amazing, Ombre," he said, his voice filled with admiration.
"You did so well." Tessa, the peacock hybrid, nodded in agreement. "You're a natural, Ombre. I'm so proud of you."
Akarui, the lion hybrid, stepped forward, his voice stern yet gentle. "You did good, little brother."
Ombre chirped again. Confusion starting to etch on everyone's face.
"Uhm, Ombre?" Tessa asked, tilting her head to the side. "Are you... are you purring?"
He chirped again, rubbing his head against Tessa's open hand. "Chirp!" Ombre chirped again, his eyes fluttering closed as Tessa's fingers gently scratched behind his ear. The others exchanged confused glances, but Merak was the first to speak up.
"Ombre, darling, are you... are you feeling alright?" Merak asked, his voice filled with concern. He leaned in closer to Ombre, his antlers casting a soft shadow over the hybrid's face.
Ombre opened his eyes, looking up at Merak with a soft, contented expression. "Chirp," he replied, his voice soft and melodic. He nuzzled into Merak's hand when the deer hybrid offered it to him.
Tessa gasped, her eyes widening in realization.
"Ombre, you're... you're in heat!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with surprise and concern. "That's why you're acting so... so different." Ombre's eyes fluttered closed again, a soft purr escaping his lips as he continued to rub his head against Tessa's hand.
"Chirp," he murmured, his voice filled with contentment.
Ankoku's eyes widened in shock, his grip on Ombre's shoulder tightening. "In heat? But... but how? I thought hybrids couldn't go into heat."
Merak nodded, his voice calm and steady. "They can't, not usually. But Ombre is different. He's a hybrid of many animals, remember? Maybe that's why Ombre can give birth."
Ankoku nodded. "Yeah, maybe..."
"Hey, don't be so sad. You're the father of those eggs, remember?" Tessa's voice was gentle, yet firm. "You're the one who should be taking care of them."
Ankoku's eyes widened in realization, his grip on Ombre's shoulder tightening. "You're right," he murmured, his voice filled with determination. "I'll take care of them, Tessa. I promise."
Tessa nodded, her peacock tail feathers rustling softly. "Good. Because they're going to need a lot of care."
Ombre's eyes fluttered open, his gaze meeting Ankoku's. He chirped softly, his voice filled with a mix of confusion and fear. "Chirp?"
Ankoku nodded, "Yeah... I'm the one who got you pregnant."
"You can understand Ombre, Ankoku?" Tessa asked, her voice filled with concern. "He's in heat, and he's confused. He needs to know he's safe and that you're here for him."
Ankoku nodded, his eyes softening as he looked down at Ombre. "I know, Tessa. I'll take care of him. He turned back to Ombre, his voice gentle yet firm. "Ombre, darling, I'm here for you. I'll make sure you're safe and comfortable. You don't have to worry about anything."
Ombre chirped again, before crawling back to his nest with the egg. "Puuur...." Ombre's purrs filled the den as he curled up around his egg, his body trembling slightly with the aftershocks of his labor. The others watched him, their expressions a mix of concern and awe.
Ankoku was the first to break the silence, his voice soft and soothing as he spoke to Ombre. "You did amazing, darling. You're so strong."
Ombre looked up at Ankoku, his eyes filled with a mix of exhaustion and relief. "Chirp," he replied, his voice barely above a whisper. "I'm so tired."
Tessa stepped forward, her peacock tail feathers rustling softly as she approached Ombre.
Ombre gasped, feeling something come out of his entrance. Merak ran over, "Ombre is giving birth again! Someone get me a string!" Merak called out, his voice urgent yet calm. Tessa quickly grabbed a length of thread from their makeshift medical kit, handing it to Merak. He took it with a nod of thanks and quickly tied it around the newly emerged egg, knotting it securely.
"Alright, Ombre," Merak said, his voice soothing as he looked down at the exhausted hybrid. "You've got this. Just a few more to go." Ombre nodded weakly, his body trembling as another contraction hit him. He gritted his teeth and pushed, his body shaking with the effort.
"Come on, Ombre," Akarui encouraged, his voice firm yet gentle. "You're doing great.
Just a little longer," Tessa added, her voice soft and encouraging. He pushed with all his might, his body shaking with each contraction.
"That's it, Ombre," Merak coaxed, his voice steady and calm. "You're almost there."
With a final push, another egg slipped out of him, landing with a soft plop onto the towel beneath him. Ombre let out a sigh of relief, his body slumping back against Ankoku's chest.
He whined, nuzzling himself deeper. His breathing was heavy and his face was flushed. "Annnnkooku..." He slurred. He sounded drunk.
