Chapter 5: Transparency Trap
The fluorescent light buzzed overhead, a dying insect trapped in the cavernous lecture hall. Dust motes danced in the weak beams slicing through high windows. It smelled of old paper, dry erase markers, and something vaguely sour. Daphne shifted on the hard plastic seat, acutely aware of the rasp of synthetic mesh against her skin. Lacey’s choice. Neon pink bra, sheer black top. “Shows off your new collarbones, Daffy,” she’d insisted, her smile sharp. “Trust me.”
Daphne didn’t. Not anymore. Not since the gym mirror, the pinching fingers, the constant jiggle commentary. But the spray… the spray Jake had used weeks ago, that weird mist… it lingered. A fog softening the edges of her outrage, making Lacey’s commands feel… reasonable. Necessary. Like starving was discipline. Like this top was confidence.
Lacey leaned close, her perfume cloying over the chalk dust. “See Ben and Mike over there?” She nodded towards two guys slouched near the back exit. Football types. “They keep looking. Told you this top was fire.” Her voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper, loud enough to carry. “Just… watch the straps, yeah? They’re kinda loose. Wouldn’t want another incident.”
Daphne’s hand flew to her shoulder. The thin strap felt flimsy. She remembered the locker room, Lacey’s helpful adjustments digging into flesh. A cold prickle ran down her spine. She tried to pull the strap tighter, her fingers clumsy.
It happened fast. A shrug, a twist to grab her dropped pen. The delicate strap slid off her shoulder, then the other followed. The sheer mesh gaped. The neon pink bra, stark against her pale skin, was fully exposed. So were her breasts beneath the flimsy fabric.
“Oh, shit!” Lacey’s gasp was theatrical, echoing off the empty desks. She didn’t whisper. Heads snapped around. Ben and Mike froze mid-conversation, eyes widening. “Daffy! Your nips are out again!” Lacey’s hand flew to her mouth, feigning horror. A delighted gleam shone in her eyes. Snickers erupted, sharp and sudden, bouncing off the walls.
Heat flooded Daphne’s face, burning her ears, crawling down her neck. She fumbled, yanking at the straps, trying to cover herself. The mesh resisted, clinging, revealing more than it concealed. Her breath hitched. The snickers grew louder, morphing into open laughter from a group near the front.
“Here,” Lacey chirped, overly helpful. She batted Daphne’s frantic hands away. “You’re making it worse! Honestly.” She tugged ineffectually at the straps. “These are useless. Total wardrobe malfunction.” She sighed dramatically, turning towards Ben and Mike. Her voice projected across the sudden quiet. “Hey! Ben! Mike! Could you guys be absolute darlings? Daphne’s having a… situation. The bathroom’s just out that door. Maybe you could help her… uh… fix it?” She winked. A broad, suggestive wink.
Daphne froze. “Lacey, no, I can–”
“Don’t be silly!” Lacey cut her off, pushing her gently but firmly towards the guys. “They’re strong. They can hold things. Or… whatever.” She giggled, high-pitched and false. “Go on! Before Professor Dry-As-Dust gets here!”
Ben looked uncomfortable, shifting his weight. Mike smirked, glancing at Daphne’s exposed chest, then back at Lacey. The laughter had died down, replaced by a thick, expectant silence. Eyes bored into Daphne. Trapped, humiliated, the fog of the spray thickening with panic, Daphne stumbled towards the exit Ben and Mike guarded. Their presence felt like a cage. She kept her head down, avoiding their eyes, focusing on the chipped tile floor leading to the dim hallway and the bathroom door.
Ben held it open silently. Mike followed her in. The small, dank bathroom smelled of cheap soap and urine. Daphne lunged for the sink counter, gripping it, her back to them. “Just… just hold the straps tight while I…” Her voice trembled. She couldn’t finish. What was she supposed to do? Sew them?
Mike chuckled. “Sure thing.” His hands, large and calloused, closed over her shoulders, fingers brushing her bare skin near the straps. He pulled. Hard. The straps dug in, the mesh stretched taut across her chest, outlining everything. Ben leaned against the doorjamb, watching, arms crossed. Daphne stared at her reflection in the smudged mirror above the sink. Her face was ghostly pale beneath the heavy contour, eyes wide and terrified behind her glasses. The neon pink screamed back at her. A grotesque parody of confidence.
“That good?” Mike asked, his breath warm on her neck. He didn’t let go.
“Y-yes,” Daphne choked out. “Fine. Thanks.” She tried to pull away. His grip tightened for a second, then released. She spun around, hugging herself, desperate to be out.
They filed back into the lecture hall. The silence was heavier now, charged. Professor Hemmings was setting up at the lectern, oblivious. Lacey beamed at them from her seat near the front. “All fixed?” she called out, her voice ringing clear in the quiet room. “Took you guys long enough in there!” She paused, letting the implication hang. Whispers started. Hemmings frowned, looking up.
Lacey’s eyes swept over Daphne, landing deliberately on her cheekbone. A slow, malicious smile spread across her face. She pointed, her voice dropping to a stage whisper that carried perfectly. “Hey, Daffy? What’s that… white stuff… on your face?”
Every head turned. Every eye focused on Daphne’s cheekbone, near her temple. Dust? Chalk? Something else? The implication was vile, immediate. The snickers returned, louder, uglier this time. Ben flushed crimson. Mike scowled, looking away. Professor Hemmings cleared his throat, bewildered. “Miss Bell? Is there a problem?”
Lacey just smiled wider, basking in the horrified attention, her gaze locked on Daphne’s crumbling composure. Daphne’s hand flew to her cheek. It felt smooth. Contoured powder. Nothing else. But the stares, the whispers, the cruel laughter echoing Lacey’s words… they painted a different picture. A filthy one. The fluorescent light flickered violently overhead, casting jagged shadows. The fog in Daphne’s mind surged, thick and suffocating, drowning the last embers of defiance. She tasted bile. Her knees buckled slightly. She didn’t wipe her cheek. She just stood there, exposed under the flickering light and a hundred judging eyes, the echo of Lacey’s question branding her skin hotter than any touch. The lecture hall blurred. The only sound was the frantic hammering of her own heart against the neon pink cage of her ribs.
